Well, there has been a good bit of talk lately on various forums about selfbows and wood arrows. I decided to have a little fun and make a video making the case. It was raining, windy, and even humorous. I hope you enjoy.
Selfbow video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwLmWIca3fY)
Great video and shooting Jimmy. Whats is the type of target that is supporting the wiffle ball,I've never seen one like it.
It's the blob. The blob man comes to our shoots at Twin Oaks. I've never googled him but those targets are nice. You can shoot the dots or put up paper faces on them. You can also shoot broadheads at them.
Nice shooting, but man, that bow is jumping around in your hand.
Ranger B, Nice shooting! If I could shoot that way I would use a selfbow and wood arrows too!
Looper selfbows more so than any other bow have to be able to move upon release. Some guys shoot loose gripped like Jimmy, some guys shoot with a "broke" elbow. The arrow pass is way out from center so the arrow needs help getting around it. Maybe Im preaching to the choir and you already knew that.
Nice job.....
Great shooting w/ a self bow Jimmy! You are a shooting MACHINE! LOL! ~Steve
I always like your videos
Great video! Quick question off topic. Have u ever stringwalked a selfbow or is that a big no-no?
:clapper: :clapper:
good shooting, jimmy! and a nice, light, torque free grip on the bow hand so that it dances on release - that's the way to do it!
Nice video!!
Great shooting too.
Thanks for sharing.
God bless,Mudd
The suspense was equal to Hitchcock, how you gradually surrounded the poor whiffle ball, which literally quivered in fear, only to deliver the slivery coup de grace at the very end.
Fritz no. It is almost impossible to do with a fixed limb (one piece) bow. The arrow doesn't fly well and the limbtips are way out of sync.
PaddyMac - I was pretty pleased with the video. Now I'm thrilled! LOL

Yeah, I know. I shot hickory self bows for many, many years before I ever bought a laminated bow. I use a much firmer grip and a bent bow arm, though. It works well for me and is really quiet.
i shot with finger slings for years before switching to thumb/forefinger "sling". :)
If you think it is tough convincing folks that selfbows and wood arrows can work now, you should have seen how tough it was 20 plus years ago. I could'nt even convince custom bowyers (who will remain anonymous) that they were any good....the selfbows that is. Thank God, Jay Massey kept a few of us so inclined to think we could do it! Nice video, and a good job on all of them you've done the past couple years (at least the ones I've watched)!
Nice Video! Makes me want to try some wood arrows. Nice shooting too!
Thanks again guys. These bows are about as fun as it gets.
Good video, and some real good shots!
How many videos have you made? I belive I have watched at least 10? Many a couple X. I almost always pick up a nugget or two. Have incorporated 3 things that have improved me considerably. I like these...alot. Oh yeah ..great shooting :notworthy: ;)
Would you happen to have links to other videos you've done?
This one is great!
Tell us about you're bow spec's and arrow spine.
Really fine shooting.
 I enjoyed that video! Thanks for sharing it. Dang wiffel balls!!!!They cant hold still, always jumping around, dodging arrows, and generally just being smart alicks!@!Good shooting
Bill
The easiest way to see all 46 of them is to go to this site and then you can click on the list on the right to see them all. Otherwise I can put up some more links.

The bow is a 66" osage bow. It is 40# @ 27" That tree was cut on Denny Sturgis's farm and it's an inner stave. There was 40 years of growth on top of the back ring of the bow. I am shooting a 10 strand D-10 string that A.S. (Allen Shaffer) made. I am shooting sitka spruce arrows. They are barrelled shafts with 125 gr. point and 5" RW helical feathers. I shoot a lot of other arrows but these are what I am toying with to shoot in 3D shoots next year. I made a winged elm bow that is 43# and fortunately it shoots the same shafts as this bow.
This bow is cut to 1/4" outside center. The arrows are 50-55# spined.
Great Shooting.!
Thanks for sharing the video.
Thank you for the info...
I'm going to have to watch more of your vids as I get time..
What do you find the barreled shafts offer over parallel ? I'm surprised you can shoot 50-55's out of a bow that's 1/4" off center..
Pat they are full length so a general rule of thumb is that you get 5# per inch past 28" so a 32" would be in the ballpark of 30-35# I got decent flight from 57# shafts but it's too hard to get shafts that are that close without buying 100 and sorting through them.
Another great video. Thanks for sharing it.
I really like your bow did you make it yourself. What kind of wood is that osage right. What is the right way to shoot them I hold mine side ways a little is that right.
Those plastic wiffle balls just don't inspire a trad man....once you got some animals or birds in front of you you were cookin'...haha Very nice bow, good shooting. Especially at over 25 yds with a wind! Still working on making one I can hunt with.
Ratslayer you should shoot your self bow just like any other bow. It should not be shot differently. It is a bow.
Yes, I make them and this one is Osage
Great vidio. Good shooting.
