Made the seat and it was comfortable until the plywood began to crack at the "V" against the tree. What's a good material for covering/protecting the wood?
Some have used a bike tube cut and glued, You could also used a think piece of carpet.
I've used 2-inch nylon webbing (old seat belt) screwed and glued around the edges.
I have a piece of high pressure steam hose.

Did you make it a "V" or did you give it more of a radius? I went of Home Depot and got a short piece of clear vinyl tubing. I split it in half and stapled it on. I don't know if that is what Dean suggested, it may be, but it works.
What about a piece of leather??
Chunk of old garden hose split down the middle???
I used some sort of pipe from HD on mine. Working out great.
Not sure if what you use is as important as using something.
Cut a radius and drop in a few sheet metal screws. Grabs a bunch better too.
Rob
I didn't put anything on mine but a bike tube would work well and wouldn't cost much or anything. Bike shops will give you old tubes from their trash if you ask them.
I used a 5 gallon bucket for my radius where it fits the tree and also used a 1/4" radius rollover router bit all the way around the entire seat. Keeps the edges of the plywood from splintering. I also used a 5/8" 5 ply interior grade plywood instead of a 3 ply exterior grade. I like Rob W 's idea about adding some sheet metal screws in the back edge to make it, "bite" , into the tree.
Timing of this thread is spooky, we were planning to hunt off ours today in the rare snow we are getting in a new spot that is not tree stand friendly. My son shot his first deer off his Torges seat earlier this year. Keep it coming gents..... :coffee:
I had some alum angle that I screwed on, did not make the "V" sharp big radius in the bottom. Been good for about 4 years now.
I do the same. Right angle metal corner supports. They come in packs of four with little screws at the hardware store. I leave them as is with about 3/4" sticking out and cut the plywood with a large enough ark so they make contact on the tree size I expect to use. I don't glue a pad to the board, I hang hang it on my belt. That way I can leave several boards out in the woods and always have a dry butt pad. Also, it is less for others to steal if it is just a board and a rope.
Info on how to make one of those seat ? Thank you Ray
There's a pic above showing yard sticks giving ya approxamate size to make.
I used a junk piece of garden hose.
I have made a bunch and this has been the best design yet. (http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee391/rjwalton8/100_2865.jpg)
I made the "v" for the notch. I will add something to it.
It was not durable but surprisingly comfortable!
I have been using a piece of nylon strap, similar to a seat belt......instead of the rope.
ZERO stretch
With all the sitting I did during the rut, taking video, I wish I had one with me. I have a thick pad, but your legs start going to sleep after a couple hours sitting on the ground against a stump. I'll just glue the pad to the seat when I make it!
Rob W. What are the dimensions of the seat pictured in your last post?
Thanks Gerald
18"wide x 12" deep.
Thanks Rob W. That sounds big enough to be comfortable. I've made a couple in the past, but never that big. I'll give it a try.
Gerald
Bigger is better...... :biglaugh: I made one that is hinged in the middle, folds up and fits in my pack. Same design but just cut in half with 2 strap hinges.
My Dad and I got bored one day and made 18 Torges style seats. We each had scrap plywood and about a mile of nylon rope. We then camo'd them with a dozen partial cans of spray paint we had laying around.
It was a cool project. It got us to clean out our garages, got rid of some scraps, and kept us off the streets for a day. :)
We passed them out to family and friends and I believe we still have a half dozen left.
One tip we pass on: Wrap the rope around the tree twice if you can. It really helps keep it from slipping and reduces rope stretch.
