Greetings All,
Just wanted to share a pic of a Whitie I killed here in Montana on the 22nd of November.
I first saw this 6x6 buck up close and personal on the 26th of October...I had him at 4 yds from my tree. I had an inch of draw left on my bow before he figured out I wasn't just a 195 lb burl up in the tree and at the time, I thought he trotted out of my life forever.
I was hunting public land and in our general(gun) season to boot. I saw plenty of bucks as the rut geared up but never him... Everytime I heard a gun report, I wondered if he was dead.
I had 4 bucks come thru the day before chasing does. The first ran by me on the ground at 15 yds as I was preparing to get in my treestand at 2 in the afternoon.
Well, the 22nd of November found me in the same stand. It was a busy morning as I had about 20 deer cruise thru on their way back to the bedding area from the fields. Most were using a trail on the thicker side of my stand. Around 8:15 I heard a little noise behind me and noticed a deer in the thick cover. As he started to move I noticed tines and readied for a shot. I had a little break that he would move thru and after watching deer move thru there knew this would be my opportunity. As he started to move I drew my bow and hit anchor, then waited. About three seconds later, He offered he his ribs and I dropped the string. The arrow buried up to the last 2 inches or so and he spun and went back the way he came. I noticed him weave right, then left and heard either a crash, or him busting out into the more open part of the riverbottom. My shot was high so I gave myself a half hour. I was going to assess blood and make a decision to either stay on the trail, or head to the truck and enjoy a cup of coffee for about an hour.
As I went to where he was standing (about 10 yds fom my tree) I noticed blood right away. I took a few steps and found my arrow, blood soaked the whole length of the shaft. As I continued, the blood got better. As I was almost to my "jumping off" spot to head to the truck, there he was. His final run was 47 yds.
As I walked over to him I didn't even realize it was him until I saw the double eyeguards! I honestly didn't even know how big he was initially as I was trying hard to concentrate on my shot. I just knew he was a buck and I was going to try to kill him.
He's my best to date.
I used a 64" 60#@ 29" longbow of my own design, a hexshaft arrow I built, and a 160grn. VPA Terminator.
Thanks for letting me share.
Happy hunting,
Jason
