I hope I'm asking this in the right place. I'd like to learn how to do this and maybe see some pics from some "ARROW MASTERS" that hang out here...
Anybody willing to share some info or direct me to a buildalong I'd appreciate it very much! Thanks
i second that! id love to learn from you master arrow crafters how to do this!
Am not sure but am guessing(and I saw a "how to" on it years ago, it's like doing Easter eggs. You float a dye or paint on top of water and dip your arrow in it.
I only found one thread with pics doing a search in How-To and Buildalongs and I read somewhere before that you float oil-based paint drops on water and twirl as you dip the shafts. Also, you have to replace the paint/water every couple shafts cuz it gets too mixed up quick.
I'd still like to see some inspirational pics, though...
Try this link. It has some good discussions and a few pictures of the finished products as well.

Thanks recurve_shooter! Just what i was looking for...
Good luck with them. I have a batch that I may try to do over the holidays. Gotta decide on the colors and then get some oil based paint!
Bowsite use to have tutorial on this plus lots of other things but I can't find it now.
Here is a link to some I made a while back. Its really hit or miss how they turn out, at least for me.

Jim Rebuck is THE MASTER at this and I challenge anybody to find a more beautiful arrow. He sells a video that describes how to do it. Just Google J & M Traditions.
I agree he does great work however I met him at two different shows and he was rude both times, not what I expected from a salesman let alone a fellow archer. Jet my opinion

Tried a mini batch of 4 and learned to thin the oil-based enamel down around 50/50 with acetone, so it spreads out thin on the water, then kinda sucks back together in a 4-6" round, floating skin. Sorry no pics of that, I was workin kinda fast...
Had some fun with air bubbles but I just poked at 'em while still wet. Let them dry for 24 hours or so and lightly rubbed with fine steel wool (0000) until the bumps were gone.
Started cresting and will finish that tonight while trying to figure out what finish to use...
It's really pretty easy and they turn out lookin' sweet!

Nice job Damon....that color combo looks really sharp!
Thanks guys.
@Green, the arrows you made for my daughter are very well done and I cannot wait til she sees them! Beautiful work!
I just did my first dozen and they turned out pretty sweet but I've got a question. Why would my paint sink?? I was using testors oil based model paint and it was only the white color, green and blue would float fine. I still got it to work but it was funny. Thought my water was maybe to cold or to warm.
Nice work, :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
D,
you might need to thin outnyour paint a little more
D, no idea why the white would sink. I didn't use a base coat on mine, but the red and black covered just fine. Also, after I finished cresting I wiped on a coat of Minwax wipe-on polyu and brought back the shine after rubbing off the air bubble bumps with the fine steel wool.
Like I mentioned, I had to thin the paint down 50/50 with acetone...
Got them done, gotta love fletch tape!
