I'm not talking about the new ones, but why are they sometimes considered the Gold Standard of T/D recurves ??? Not a bash thread, I never had a chance to shoot one and would love to know how they shoot and feel.
Most of the Fred Bear fans love it because :
l. It was invented by the man himself in the late 60's and Fred used it exclusively until his death.
2. The system is quick and simple and needs no tools.
3. They are a dream to shoot.
There are lots of guys with tons more FB TD experience than I (check out the Trad History/Collecting forum), but I'll say that my limited experience with them has been super positive. The A handle magnesium riser take down that I'm currently shooting is super smooth, accurate, quiet, and just plain sweet! The take down system is solid and fast. Say design genious!! Our TradGang friend Sam Stephens has been filling up the freezer and keeping his taxidermist quite busy for the last year or so while hunting with vintage Fred Bear take-downs. They've been proving themselves for a long time. You owe it to yourself as an archer to try one! :)
Simple and quick to takedown or put together, no tools needed, quick and quiet to shoot. I traded for my first one in 1973, a 1969 model A-handle wood with No. 1 43# limbs, and killed my first ever deer that fall with it. In a moment of folly, I let it go and have regreted it ever since. I now hunt with the '70s era magnesium bows, I took a nice doe a couple of weeks ago with my A riser mag with No. 2 53# limbs. She managed 50yds after the shot. I almost think I like the mag bows better than the wood, as I don't mind a little camo paint on them. Notice though I said almost!!!
Come on there has to be more T/D shooters out there !!!
I will add that the one I am using most is a new red stripe A handle with #3 rose Oak limbs. Mine are 59# @ 31" draw. This combination feels good to carry and is extremely quiet and dead in the hands at the shot. I know you can find more exotic woods in other bows but they are not classic designs like the Bear and most are more expensive.
I have a B handle in bubinga on order. this will make a 64" bow and hopefully is super accurate for me.
I love the Bear T/D's! I have three A risers, two being Mags and one of the new red stripes. I build my own limbs and have mine set up as 56" and 58" lengths. Great design and all limbs can be changed with any riser.
It's just a classic design. The easiest T/D system ever invented, a great shooting bow, and available in enough different combinations to suit almost everybody.

Not my best shooting bow but I love mine for 'Who', and 'what' it represents. Its just a classic.
Oh, and the takedown system is the best I have used.
