Yesterday my wife said she wants us to go to Hawaii next year (November ish). I said that would be wonderful as long as I get to bring my bow too, and she agreed!!! So now I need info. I would be fine with just goats or hogs. Anyone have experiance hunting there?
when I went I tried everything to hunt hogs but it just didn't pan out,,, there are a couple guys on the widow forums who are from hawaii that hunt goats and hogs but it was tough just staying in touch with them to get everything scheduled, you may have better luck though if you can register over there..
if you fly fish they have the biggest bonefish in the world there,, right outside pearl harbor on the flats just don't accidently step in one of the japanese bomb craters where the turtles hide.
I had a fun afternoon on an Oahu . HUGE grass, they call it elephant Grass. Trying to plan a hunting diversion on Maui for April.
Contact Ryan at S2 bowstrings, maybe you can pick his brain on where to go,nothing like local knowledge.
Do yourself a favour and contact DHR or Steve.H on this site. These two men helped me a LOT when i was planning my trip !!
Pm me if you like, i may be able to answer a few questions as well.
Bill
pm S2 bowstrings on here
Private or public? If private how much are you willing to spend? Which island are you traveling to? Might be tough to find public places to bowhunt during the winter months. We have our bird season from November through the end of January.
Normally I would say Kauai cause of the public lands availability but they did some gunning this year and I'm not fully sure how that depleted the targets. A buddy will be over there during Christmas and will give me the update.
A coupe of the biggest issues with HI is sorting out ownership, areas that are open, and most public lands are weekends only.

A wee bit of info.
BEWARE of Alaskans who give you advice on hunting Hawaii...!
:p
Actually, there is probably no better source of Hawaiian hunting knowledge (on the forums anyway) than Steve H. I was on Maui and Molokai this year. Steve's stories, how-tos, and personal advice were a real benefit to me. I had a great time, and plans are under way for a return!
Great info, thanx for sharing.
I've heard they have feral chickens too that are very sporting with the bow. That is, for when you're not chasing hogs and goats.
Most of the feral hens (mostly on Kauai) stick to the edge of cultivated area and roads. Never see them in the killing fields.
What island are you going to the? Send lonala a pm he lives on the big island. He kills pigs and goats all the time.
Steve,
Are you referring to the Francolin grouse (several sub-species) that populate the islands? Those things were thick almost everywhere we went. They woke us up every single morning on Molokai...a nicer alarm clock I've never known.
Just got back from the "Big Island". We had a great time hunting sheep with C and S outfitters. Great hunt at a very reasonable price. Give Chris a call you won't be diappointed.
Hawaii is at the top of the list of destinations that I really want to hunt and that I can also reasonably afford. I would be fine with hiring a guide for a day or two, but is it feasible to combine this with some DIY?
Don't forget to apply for your hunter safety exeption !
Smith: Extremely so BUT depends on the island. Loads of info handed to you here with one click.....
Wow Steve,
That was a great write up about Hawaii! I think you've shot more animals in Hawaii than me. BTW, I shot a tournament this past weekend with Mark H.
Aloha!
Ryan
Bruddah Mark?! He seems to have fallen off the face of the Earth! He used to come on here occasionally. A very nice guy.
Heading to Maui/Lanai in just over a week. Lanai will be my fifth island that I''ll have hunted in HI.
Yup Bruddah Mark!

Here he is testing the prototype static tip Stalker Recurve.
Those are two great islands to hunt! I'll be heading to Lanai for the public land deer hunt. You may want to consider coming over for mouflon this year. Rumor has it that they are going to open it for rams this year.
Yup Mark is a really nice guy and he can still shoot! He placed third in the trad division at our State Shoot.

Guys, I do not see much mention of Oʻahu. I may need to be there in early January for "bidness" and am wondering if it is worth the trouble to schedule a weekend stay for hunting? I am poor so it would need to be public/DIY.
Thanks!
One of the best things about bowhunting in HI is the size/weight of your luggage. No woolies required. ;)
Oahu is the worst island for bowhunting. The Oahu public area for goats will be open for bird season, but there are a few areas open year round for pigs. Not the best hunting though. In a weekend hunt, you'll be lucky to even see one. There are a few Trad Gang members who have access to private land hunting, unfortunately I'm not one of those guys.
Thanks Ryan, if any of those other members are feeling generous and want to take a mainlander out I would be willing to reciprocate by hosting for public land whitetail hunting (Sept 15-Jan 31st) here in Maryland.
If you think even on private ground though that is not worth the trouble for a weekend hunt please let me know that as well. Please PM me either way. Thanks!
Ryan: We'll be hunting mouflon on Lanai, know guys that are friends with "Lanai Steve" so a major "in"!
Luv: Hopper flights can be cheap to the other islands! Check, HI Air, "GO!" (IFlyGo), etc.
Doug's right, you can hunt with surf shorts in Hawaii!
Hey Doug,
Hope to see you ad Karen back here soon!!! Congrats again on a great buck.
Steve,
Best of luck! Ram season has been closed for awhile. It's going to be a good one this year!

Ok, seems like I need to island hop. It also sounds as if I will not be able to hunt public due to bird season?
Are there any outfitters or people that do unguided/trespass fee type hunts? It is probably best to PM them to me to stick with the forum rules. Even if they are guided please send them to me and I will check them out.
Elksticker - I sent you a PM in reference to C and S as I cannot find anything other than a Facebook page for them.
Thanks!
"....I will not be able to hunt public due to bird season?"
I think it is more if a you wouldn't want to thing vs. you can't.
"Are there any outfitters or people that do unguided/trespass fee type hunts?"
That implies organization and I wouldn't quite say that is the norm over in HI. Go to the HI State hunting site and look over the public area using some of the recommendations above and from my link.

Oh, ok I misunderstood and thought someone said goats were closed due to bird hunting. Alright, I will read over your post on PBS again. There was a lot of good info in there.

A clue!
Also, I can't stress enough, get after your hunter Safety exemption immediately!

They are called Hawaii Bowhunting Outfitters. We (Mana'o Productions) just did the video for their website. I would attach a link but it features my wife hunting with a compound. Check out their website. They are located in Kona on the island of Hawaii.

Sent a PM. Again, it was a blast! If I could I would go every year.
From looking at the regs it looks like the only thing open during January is unit G which is in the Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park. It says hunting is open year round and that there are 3 day permits available.
Do you guys have experience hunting specifically in that area?
Luv: Extensive. It's all provided at that link.
Steve, what are you guys doing for sleeping bags, shelter, and food on the trail?
I have a 1# sleeping bag (North Face?); I use a extremely small "Vargo" alcohol stove; a Hennessey Hammock (but you can use a foam pad); and for food I take some Mtn House, a few bars, oatmeal would work, too many possibilities to list. It's almost tropical enough that you don't need a bag, but not quite.
When I lived on Oahu, I killed my first 2 boar hogs hunting the area along the Pali Highway which is bowhunting only. If you're able to hunt there, it's an option. No help for me when I started there so I walked up several ridges and found some great wallows and rubs - that's where I had some success. Good luck and enjoy the islands!
Todd:
I bet you recognize at least one face on my link above....
Alright, you all have started me thinking. My wife is wanting to go to "The Mouse" in August, but I want to go back to Hawaii. I'm working my boys (6 and 8) right now as to what they really want and without coaxing, they both want Hawaii again. They both remember 1 1/2 years ago and really loved it. Is there anything open at all in the month of August to hunt? If so I honestly believe she could be swayed easily.
Steve H,
Hunted a bit with Rick and his dad, Clyde, and son, Ricky Boy. Very fond of the family. Please pass along Aloha when you next see them. Also, Rick has stepped up to a recurve!? Best regards, Todd
MV: Yes and PM sent.
Todd: It has been several years since I hunted the the B-dets. Rick apparently goes both ways, lol. he and his girlfriend Cathy got married about 2 years ago. Do you know their "Howley" buddy Bigfoot Bob?
Steve,
Sure do. Bob had an affinity for the old 190 gr. Ribteks which he would keep sharpening till they were about 150 grs.!!! Small world, the Beaudet's lineage goes back to ... New Hampshire. Didn't know about Rick's nuptials but I know he has at least 2 grands by now. Have fun in HI and I'm a little green with envy which will be alot green by late winter! Best, Todd
Thanks stickgunner shot one Monday, ate her last night Later
Elksticker whats up?Shot oone from where you were and saw 5 more 1 over 200# go figure Mon evening.
Very good info by Steve H. I've hunted with some of the same guys and hunted Kauai on that Kalalau valley trail.
I could maybe add a couple things;
You are supposed to get a permit to hike that Kalalau trail though many don't. #1 rule, no shooting at those low flying choppers- there are many. And being on that trail during spring break will get you wishing you were in your twenties. A guy doesn't really need much warm gear back there most times of the year- heck, there were groups of college coeds back there with a small daypack. The mtn above is one of the rainiest places on earth [480" if I recall] so raingear is good.
It doesn't get near that much rain down lower- probably only 280"...grin, Count on the trail being muddy. My buddy- conveniently?- slipped hyper-extending his knee on a trip we did and I had to carry his and my loaded pack 7/8 of the way out- no treat.
been: You just need a permit to camp on the trail, not to hike....unless it changed.
Just back from my first trip to Lanai and second trip to Maui. The Axis were too slick but a pig paid the price!
