First..you need a fresh dried thick cow leg bone with bulbed ends cut off.
Now slice off dense slab off leg bone.
Now trace out head shape on bone slab !
Cut out shape on bandsaw..be carefull to keep it flat
(http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x330/Ruralimagesandartbyjeff/DSC06398.jpg)
Now thin, shape till you get the shape you want.
To finish ..hand sand...belt sand or file to get sharp edge ! A little wood wax coat and your ready to put on arrow!!!
One more thing ..be careful not to breath bone dust. It effects some people.
Good luck on you bone point!!!
In a few days I'll draw someone name that responds to this topic and send them this point to try..Happy Thanksgiving !! Jeff
Sofer Sogood.
Ooooh, if I might add;
If you've never worked with bone before, wear a dustmask & clothes you don't mind burning. The stink when you're cutting or sanding bone would gag a maggot. It permeates your clothes & hair like nothing else on earth!
Hot stag or buffalo comes pretty close for smell!
Looks pretty cool. Can you hunt with a bone head?
that saw and sander doesent look very primative, :bigsmyl:
like robtattoo said ...don't breath dust. doing it outside helps !
arrow3d ...lol...you can use a sandstone slab if you want to do it primitive all the way..But be sure to wash your loin cloth in the creek when your done.to get stinky dust out !!!hmmmmm. ...lol
yes in Ohio
There's smell alright! Never work bone in the house except to substantiate Mrs' bitchin_!
Great job on the BH!
I love that. Thanks for the tutorial! I've done some hunting in your neck of the woods.
Excellent post. Thanks for the education.
Great Post, Love the look of that head!
Got to try that thanks. :clapper:
Nice! I will be trying this for sure.
Thanks for that. Do you think I use my deer leg bones from the buck I took this year?
try it Kellyg
now thats cool
im new and think i want to try it
just got done making things out of deer horns and the smell is well differant for sure and a dust mask helps for sure
.... anyone that has any other Idea's on making "bone Points" please add...I'm learning too ! Also I don't think bone points are for everyone..for hunting! Special care must be taken before you let one fly!
Good looking point. Correct on the smell. I always cut antler outside with a fan blowing the dust away from me with a mask. Usually that last project of the day so I go from the project to the shower.
Are you going to barb your hunting point or give it the Christmas tree look like flintknapping?
Good stuff Jeff
Very cool. I've been thinking of trying to file one out of whitetail antler just for grins. For those thinking of doing this, I've heard if you are able to get the leg bone from a giraffe it's the hardest bone out there and should hold an edge nicely.
That is a great way of doing it, thanks for sharing.
I am pretty sure one must also be very careful of Mad Cow disease as it is in the bone that it stays, this depends on where you get the bone, and where one lives.
P.S. Being an easterner, I probably have this MCD all wrong, it's just what I have heard.
I saw in a book of Native American artifacts a point made out of buffalo neck sinew. Anybody got any ideas on that one?
thats awesome, ive never seen that before.
thanks for showing it
Heres one mounted on a Olive shoot !

Very nice!
in response to the question/statement: "you can hunt with bone heads?"
If you come to Michigan you can hunt with me and I am pretty certain I qualify for the "bonehed" catagory more often than not. Just saying
One on a Red Osier (dogwood) Shaft

Nice, thanks for the build-a-long.
That is one good looking point you have there. I have been watching your posts for a while. I made me want to kill a deer with a stone and self arrow. Well, I shot a doe with that setup last year... Looks like bone will be on the menu this year...
God Bless,
Nathan
Theses heads do go on the light side. This one is 2 1/4 X 7/8 inch.
79.8 Gr.
You can go with a bigger head if needed or leave it thicker.
Nice point!! And relatively easy looking without the need for alot of extra tools.
That's really cool. Were bone points used by Indians?
Yes they did use them canoeman.! Bud B. Small hand saw and a file will work too... I have made them that way too!
Great looking head there. Hope to see one with blood on it.
How sharp do they get? Thanks for the build-a-long.
Just how sharp can you get one of those??
Looks great and not to difficult with the right tools.
Thanks!
Somewhere around the house or in storage I've got some bone points on cane arrows made in the Amazon. Shafts are around 4' to 4 1/2' long, points are around 3 1/2" long and a little over 1/4" thick. They don't seem sharp, But not long after I acquired them I was showing them to a friend at his shop. He had a Black Palm bow that probably drew 70#, He drew back one of the arrows and his fingers slipped. That bone point and arrow ended up going through his breaker box and sticking about 2" out the back side. Guess they would do a number on most game animals.
Thanks for the pictorial. I gotta try it! Great looking points.
You made that look too easy. Plus, it looks great. Nice job on the hafting to the shaft. Have you shot anything with a bone point? If so, what were the results?
Nice build along. How do you prep the bone prior to cutting, ie, do you boil it, or is there any prep outside of thoroughly washing? Will high temp cleaning weaken the bone! Thanks again for the tutorial.
Thanks for the tutorial. That didn't seem so hard.
With power tools there real easy and fast to make !
Yes there very sharp.
thats cool, ive always wanted to try something more primitive than metal broadheads
Great looking point you have there!!
I'll draw a name tomorrow ...for bone head !
That just gave me some awesome ideas. Where did you get the bone? I wonder if a bone at the pet store would work maybe the smoked flavor/smell would mask the bone smell? I'm assuming the smell is kin to splitting a horn with a bandsaw to make a bow?
Very cool!
We have a bunch in our cattle fields...Dang ..Coyotes!
njloco..I drew your name. message me your address and I'll send out the bone arrowhead. Hope you make a arrow with it ! Happy Thanksgiving ..Jeff
That's just too cool. Excellent gesture Jeff. Now let's see some bloody bone.
Very cool thing to do Jeff, top shelf. Congrats njloco!
I'm going to have to give that a try, thanks, great post.
NJLOCO I drew Your Name for Bone Broadhead ! Please message me your address so I can ship..Thanks All for looking at this TOPIC ! OFF BOWHUNTING NOW !
IF ANYONE KNOWS NJLOCO..Have him message me his address so I can send out "BONE POINT" Thanks
Thats awesome!
It smells good when you sand it ?
Jeff,
You can help mask the smell by soaking the antler or pieces in a pan of water for a few days...It will help keep the dust down some...This may gum up the sander a little but get a rubber block to keep the grit clean or an old tennis shoe..
