Title: 4 blades in a back quiver?
Post by: TxAg on November 17, 2011, 01:07:00 PM
Does anyone find that 4 blade heads are a bit of a pain when using a back quiver?

I really like my 4's but I've noticed that they catch and ding a bit compared to my 2's.

Multi blade heads do not work well in a back quiver if it is properly broken in and flattening gently around your arrows to quieten them.  If a quiver is real wide open, which you would need for multi blade heads, then you're going to have noise issues.

I believe Mr. Mitchell has the right of it. I use a Hill-style back quiver and I feel restricted to the use of two-bladed heads. I find that even two bladed broadheads that have a 90 degree trailing edge tend to hang up, now and then, upon extraction. As a result, I seem to use the Zwickey Eskimo or old Bear Razorheads, most of the time. I think those "swept forward" trailing edges make a difference.

I use broadHeads on My Bow Quiver, even if I am carrying my Back Quiver. That way they are Guaranteed Not to Knick & Ding off of each other. Call it what you will, but it Works for Me!!

Take a file and barely round the very tip of the back of each blade and they wont grab as bad on the way out, and it wont effect the blades penetration.

And if you use foam(dense type) in the bottom of the quiver you can cut little blocks out 1/2" by 1/2" so the heads lay staggered above and below each other and wont hang up.

I've been at this sport a long time. I know a number of folks like back quivers but I have never been able to keep any braodhead sharp in one. Like Shakes, I like my bhs to be stable and held in place at all times.

    Agreed. If you're going to carry broadheads, use a quiver designed to carry broadheads - that is, one that keeps them separate and secured, and that allows for clean removal.

I use a 3 blade Snuffer for Turkey and Bear. I either use my Catquiver or GN bow quiver. These type quivers will handle any broadhead.

The back quiver was not designed to handle multiple blade heads. My quiver has a large base and collapses in the center of my back to keep arrows from rattling and becoming dull. Pulling out a multiple blade head would not only dull them but the heads would hang up.

It would be like putting 10 arrows in your back quiver with Judo points. Pull one arrow out and it hooks 2 more and they fall out. Years ago guys I knew all used back quivers and Bear Razorheads.
They installed the insert when they reached their blinds.

With the exception of the Catquiver and Kwikee Quiver where the broadheads are separated, bowquivers have foam or rubber slits for the broadheads to be placed and held secure. Do you think by shoving those heads in foam or through those rubber slits don't dull them a little? Alot more than back quivers.

Bottom line, use what you feel comfortable with but multiple blade heads and back quivers don't mix.

Joe: When I get new foam in my quiver I take a sharp bh and make a place in the foam for each head to minimize dulling. That way each broadhead goes in the same slot the same way every time. No matter how you carry your heads they need to be touched up from time to time anyway, don't you think? The quiver I prefer is a modified Delta quiver that I put a strap on like the GFA type. Works great in 99% of the situations I find myself in.

Agree Bill...broadheads should be checked every so often for sharpness. I did the same to my GN, made the rubber slits larger to minimize the dulling effect.

I believe 90% of trad hunters use a bowquiver and I could be wrong. I think the perfect bowquiver would have a longer hood to protect the longer 3:1 ratio heads and small pockets like the Kwikee to keep each head separate.

This way the head doesn't have to be pushed through rubber or foam and the hunter won't worry about replacing the materials down the road. Again Bill...your right, we owe it to the animal to check our heads on occasion.

I have 2 nice back quivers and use them only in 3-D shoots with field tips. If ya don't shoot good you can look good with a nice back quiver. They work great for the speed shots we have for the novelty shoots but they are not my choice for hunting.
