All,
I have been trying to decide on a new recurve. I am trying to find a short-ish bow for use in blinds and treestands. I am looking for something in the 50-55 lbs range that can handle my draw of 29.5 inches. It seems like everytime I get it narrowed down I find another candidate. Basically, I have been trying to figure this out for three weeks and am no closer today than I was when I started. I hesitate to post this thread because I am pretty sure you guys are just going to make the choice more difficult
Caleb
What do you consider "shortish"? Longbow or recurve?
A recurve 58" or less would be ideal. I prefer a one piece but that might not be a reality
C
Ambush Two Tracks 50"
Caleb, take a look on-line for Wapiti Custom Bows by J.K. Chastin, he makes a great bow in my opinion and has a 20% off sale right now. Has many bows in stock which are listed on his website or build you one to your specs.
Good luck!
Zipper
next question? :)
Dan Toelke at Montana Bows, he is a sponsor, and makes a 58" one piece that will draw out to 30". You will be hard pressed to find a better bowyer to deal with.
Jack Kempf makes a Raven with static tips.
56 inch long.
Randy
Have to agree with Tutanka Dan Toelke is great. I shoot his 60" whip, no better bow out there and he is great to deal with.
Another one here for Dan Toelke...Awesoe bows and a great bowyer to deal with...
Toelke or Black Widow......Toelke Lynx is very fast very quiet bow!
shrew, big jim thunderchild, wow I would not want to be you unless I had about ten g's to drop on all the great bows people have listed. I just picked up an absolute work of art from roman hershberger, Hill Country bows, in millersburg ohio. It is a 58" bow and shoots like a 66" I would not hesitate to recommend him if you want something that long. I got a longbow but I think he makes some shorter recurves that are just as beautiful and just as sweet to shoot. Good Luck
I would contact Jess Stewart ar Sierra Blanca Bows. He's making nice recurves based on the Rocky Mtn Recurve design. Very nice bows.
Take a look at the Tornado recurve line on my website.I have two instock bows in your weight range.Dont forget we are giving Tradgang members a $50.discount on all bows until December31,2011.Let me know if i can help.
I have a new bow that would work. It has a 12 inch riser, 56 in bow with Talon 11 static limbs mounted on the back of the riser. It will handle your draw length easily.
God bless and good luck in your search. Steve
Hoots all the way!!!
If I was going to order a custom 1 piece short recurve I would go with the Black Widow PSR for a short takedown I would go with the Black Widow PSA. Now I don't own either of these bows but I can attest that they shoot as good or better than the rest of them, and the people at Black Widow are as friendly to deal with as you can ask for. The bow I use out of a blind is either my 62" Tomahawk Diamond series SS longbow or my Bear Kodiak Magnum.
Contact 4runr - Hill Country Bows contact here on Tradgang....
you need to shoot a bunch of short bow's and see what you like before you buy.
Two Tracks x2
How long are you ready to wait? some of the bowyer mantion above have prety long waiting list... Good luck with you search... keep us posted on your choice!

Toelke or dryad
Both great bows, but try to shoot one before and get a feel for the grips.
Bob Lee 54" one piece recurve
Two Tracks, Zipper, Stalker. Reasonable price, reasonable delivery time, great performance, great bowyers to deal with. Good luck!
butt seriously ...
with a long 29.5" draw, there isn't a shortish 58" or so recurve around that won't be as smooth as a 62" or longer curved stick. that's the plain physics of it all, so the final questions you need to answer YERSELF are -
1) do i want smoothness of draw and stability of the shot, or is compactness and manueverability more important for how i hunt and my hunt venues, and can i live with some string pinch at full draw?
2) after answering #1, you can move on to - what bowyer, what holding weight/woods/colors/etc, and how much of a loan will i need to float? :D
I would look at Rainy Day bows and Legend Bows, both sponsers.
I have to throw in my experience with St Joe River bows.
I have a 56" recurve of theirs that I absolutely love. It's a stupid simple design and that's what I love. Very quiet and is a great point and shoot bow. Seems to hit exactly where I'm looking, no stack, and very smooth. It's the shortest bow I've ever owned and it's also the best shooting and most forgiving. Even more so than all of the ILF rigs I've played with over the last couple of years.
I'd cut the top off the blind and use a longbow for both, but that's just me. I wonder how some of the Lost Creeks would work at your draw.

Caleb here is a thread about Cliff Huntington's Harvest with one of our 56" Recurves
Caleb, I currently own one of St Joes 56" inch recurves and couldn't be happier with it, compact enough for any tree stand or blind. Very quick and forgiving shooter. The best thing about this purchase is the people that are behind making this great bow, Dave and Tracey are 2nd to none and will help you throughout the whole process.
I recently obtained a Toelke take down recurve. It's 56", 57"@27". It's very smooth and stable for a short curve. A friend with a 29.5" draw even liked it. If I was in the market for a new bow I would talk with Dan Toelke about the lynx.
I love love love my Gene Sanders Evolution 52 inch bow. Mine is 52 @ 28 and I draw about about 25 inches. This bow packs a punch and is great in the tree stand. It is also a very nice looking bow and starts around 450 and dressed out like mine is 600. It is deadly quiet too. Gene Sanders is in Dallas Georgia. Rick Johnson has two of these and I shot them so well I ordered one of the exact same weight. We chronographed some bows in the yard a few months ago and the bows similar in speed were ACS.
