I have two ghillies. One is a heavy canvas style and the other is a light weight 2 piece. Both have the long string type material on them and not the strips. Both are woodland pattern and have alot of green in them. Here's what I want to do:
I'm going on a spot/stalk muley hunt in South Dakota next year and have been researching the terrain. Lots of dead looking sage brush type stuff. I want to remove most of the green from the lightweight ghillie and put in a lot of tans/light browns. Does anyone know of or have used a readily available material to make 1" strips out of that is fairly resistant to collecting every single thorn or burr that I might come across? I'd still like it to get that "frayed look" on the edges after some use.
I'm also going to cut the built in hood off of the jacket, put a piece of elastic in it, and convert it into a "Terry Hat" :D
I was actually thinking of finding someones ruined/wornout ASAT or Predator camo and using that for the strips. It should add some subtle shadow to the suit and help break up the brown.
Thoughts? Ideas? Comments?

Call/email ASAT direct(web site)in Anaconda MT. and they will send you some remnant ASAT standard or leafy material I'm sure. Faded Carhart tan is perfect for dry grass...like an African lion.

Make some visits to the thrift stores and you should be able to find some wool shirts, pants or skirts in good colors that can be cut into strips.

I got mine at a fabric store. They have many different camo patterns. A few yards go along way. Also mixed jute twine with it, natural and dyed with rite dye.
The ASAT LEAFY is great but an ASAT ghille should be the BOMB.I have also thought of using my ASAT leafy as a base and then "adding ghillie".

My wife taught me how to use her sewing machine the other day, so I could sew a bunch of strips on a piece of old mesh jersey fabric, to attach to a hat. I used cut strips from a piece of camo material from Joanne's Fabrics, and the hat cover turned out pretty good. I really freaked out a coyote (that I didn't know was there) when I stood up, and I was dressed in leafy-material pants, a standard camo jacket, and my ghillie hat. The coyote ran off about 20 yards and then sat and barked and growled at me until even after I had walked off.
