I'm not usually the one that does the grocery shopping at my house. I got talked into it tonight because I needed to pick up some oil for my truck anyway.
I guess it's been awhile since I payed any attention to the price of food these days. All I have to say is "WOW"
I had been seriously been thinking about laying off of the deer for a few weeks and doing a little duck hunting. Now I think a full freezer will be first on the list.
I usually try to get three in the freezer(I'm 2/3 of the way there.) This year I might try for 4. Anybody else hunting harder to pack the freezer tight?
Rob
I always try to get three deer in the freezer. My girls are big eaters. ;o)
The price of meat these days is crazy. It seems to go up every other week. About 3 years ago I got put on a heart healthy trigliceride and chloresterol lowering diet. My doctor told me to only eat beef twice a week and limit it to 3 ounces. Hell, thats 1 meatball. He said I could eat all the deer meat I wanted. So I definitely hunt to fill the freezer.
I always fill the freezer. Last year my family ate all 5 deer in my freezer. This year I am trying for 6. I only have 4 more to go to reach my shopping quota this year.
I heard that, It's been a tough season and I need to get busy I only have one in the freezer so far!
I agree, every trip to the super Market seems to justify the money I spend on hunting. 10 fold.

And it's a helluva lot more fun. Can't put a price on that.
I like to have at least 2 deer for the freezer, I am half way there.
Got one freezer full of Elk the other one is loaded with Hog meat. No room for another animal of any kind.

Good Problem to have!
I'm the one who does the groceries at home and let me tell you that i hate do buy meat... I would prefer to have wild in the freezer, but this year, it didn't happen other that for salmon... Bison hunting is on right now... But no bows alowed... Good for all of you who have a freezer full for the winter!!
Right on! Wife and I have been noticing the food price rises but particulary this past week. Have a deer in the frezer and planted a nice garden that produced well, so freezer is pretty full. Sure love knowing where my food comes from as well!
My wife and I can go through two in a year, so I do what it takes to put two in the freezer when I can.
We raised Boer goats for a while - very worth doing (and tasty) but at least with deer you don't have to buy and maintain fencing.
Except in Texas, I guess. :biglaugh:
Currently have wool sheep - but if Lilly doesn't shape up I may only need one deer this year.
Charlie The problem is her name. Call her fluffy instead, it's a subliminal thing :readit: :biglaugh:
If that doesn't work then call her dinner. ;)
I can get by with one deer but have to ration it, 2 deer would be better. Then I can make jerky and venison dinner when ever I want.
I am a meet hunter 3 in. May do 4 this year, but there is a lot of season for that. I am going duck hunting as much as possible during gun season.
Stock up on peanut butter. I hear that is going way up.

Amen to that!!
Let's assume $4 per pound for red meat on average. Each 100 pound doe nets maybe 50 pounds of boneless. So each deer is worth $200 let's say on average. That justifies my hunting expenses for deer at least. We'll eat 4 deer per year.
i prefer wild game. it doesn't have all the steroid/hormones and i know how it was cleaned.
4 OR 5 for me and the wife. We eat it 4 to 6 times a week. I got a 13 month old son now so when he gets bigger I'm sure I'll be adding to the list. Big garden during the summer good to. As well as bluegill and crappie fillets packed it. Beats alot of the processed junk you buy at the store anyway.
I like venison and its better for you , so its worth it to me to hunt, plus I just enjoy hunting. But, if you think about how much you spend on tags, gear, gas...etc it doesn't usualy work out to venisons advantage from a strictly dollar and cents view. The math never works out on fsihing either, but I enjoy that as well.
yep, never enough meet in the freezer with the prices at the store these days
I don't know guys. If you're justifying hunting to save on the bill at the supermarket, I think you should sit down and do some math.
Here are my estimated hunting expenses over the last two bow seasons:
2 years worth of licenses $74.80
new treestand $250.00
materials for new bow (I build my own) $200.00
materials and heads for a dozen arrows $54.00
cost of hunting lease (only one year) $175.00
gas for my truck $350
deer butchering $65
total = $1,168.80
I got one doe last year and didn't get any shot opportunities this year, so assuming I ended up with 50 lb. of meat from that deer, that is $23.38 / lb of meat.
Now if I would have gotten another deer this year, but still had the same butcher fee, it would have been $12.34 / lb. of meat.
Yes some costs could be cut down, like butchering my own deer, and I won't need another treestand for a long time, but some costs are fixed like license fees and gas to travel to and from hunting grounds. Also, we all buy new bows and other accessories when we really don't need them.
I'm definitely not arguing the price at the supermarket hasn't increased, but hunting is not saving you money.
But hey, it's still a better use of money compared to sitting at a bar.

....creating the memories afield and getting a belly full of venison: PRICELESS! i would do that every year for the rest of my life, but.. who the heck am i to speak..just my 2 cents
graybark - I totally agree. My point is that I am not hunting because I have any notion that it will save on the grocery bill. I do it because it is just plain good fun no matter what the cost. And if I didn't hunt, I don't know what else I would do outside of work.
