Title: how to carry E Z Steps ? Solution Updated!
Post by: joebuck on November 13, 2011, 05:33:00 PM
Anybody out there got a homemade pouch or contraption to carry EZ Steps Deluxe (that's the folding self tapping bit) without the clanking and handy when climbing up the tree?

Been using a fanny pack positioned in front but that binds them some.  Tried cutting holes in bottom of my bandalero shotgun Shell holder and they clanked.  Any ideas?  Thanks

Joey, I've always carried my steps be they folders, solids,or sky hooks in a simplest, thin material pouch that is just big enough to get them in. Just big enough so they kinda stack on top of each other.

Then I just run a thin piece of rope thru it(usually the pouch has a belt loop). Tie it so it hangs the right length while slung over my neck, hanging on my side.

That way it's easy to carry in my pack with the rope wound tight around it so it doesn't clank while carrying.

When I get to my tree, I take it out, sling it over my neck so it hangs on whatever side you prefer. If you go slow when taking them out, from top to bottom, they hardly make a sound.

Just how I've done it for years...

Saw where a guy used one of those neoprene shotgun shell belts.  Looked pretty slick.

Like Steve O said, years ago I used a shotgun shell belt.  Worked pretty well.  I also used a small padded case made for holding cassette tapes.  That worked just like how Guru describes his system.

I use a system similer ton Guru's. This year I headed to Goodwill and found a couple very small ladies purse's. Fit a tree step perfectly, plus have a small zippered pocket to hold my bow hook (which I tend to lose amoungest all the treesteps.)Purse cost me $1!

A turkey hunting or upland vest works well. Put the steps in the side pockets. Use the back pouch for anything else you want to carry.

OK, I know I am setting myself up for ridicule by showing this strange picture. I have been using this contraption for the last 25 years as evident by the outdated camo.

I had my wife make this apron for my screw in steps. It has 12 slots for steps and a pouch to drop them in when I pull them.

I load the slots with steps for my hike in, they are quiet and easily accessible.

When I leave and pull the steps on my way down a tree I drop them in the pouch which holds them until I am on the ground.

I use one of the old military pouchs. They hold 12 to 15 of the 1 piece ez steps. They have the clasp to close while walking. They also have a waterproof liner. Plus they have the extra pocket that I carry extra bow pull up rope in case one at the stand gets broke or something. The biggest plus is they are very cheap. The older ones were made of a lot heavier material.

I carry it on my belt on the right side. I leave my steps in the tree except the bottom five since I hunt private land that way I am not packing 15 steps everytime to each stand.

Trophyline, the Tree Saddle outfit, sells a belt to hold steps.

heres my "Step Hanger" .  made out of some scrap 5oz leather. basically it has two positions, open ( for removeing and restacking steps) and closed for transporting. I have included a belt snap to carry on belt or carbiner for clipping on pack etc. Formed dipped leather in water to hold steps tight and rattle free....pleased with the functional design.. probably tweak my next a little here and there.

I use a military pouch similar to the one Bofish uses, works great.
