The shadow of this buck is what I will always remember about this hunt. I was in the thick safety of a pine tree when I saw four legs walking along the edge of the shelterbelt. I readied myself looking toward the end row of the trees in front of me facing the west as the sun went down. Before I physically saw the buck, I saw his shadow first. Sweeping tines outline the top of a graceful shadow on the ground. My heart immediately began speeding up at the sight, knowing this was the opportunity I had been waiting for. Moments later when the buck actually appeared, I made a grunt noise to stop him. He looked behind for the grunt while my arrow sped through the air. The shot was 15 yards, my sweet spot when it comes to shooting traditional bow, and the arrow found its intended mark. The buck expired quickly, always something to be thankful for. Seeing his shadow first was a special twist on a memorable hunt.
The view from my tree stand as the sun sets...

Justin,
That is a great buck! Looks like another TallTines harvest. I see you are not using a bow quiver...makes me have to ask the question; what arrow/broadhead are you using?
Outstanding Iowa buck....but even more impressive was the total experience. What a memory.
Beautiful Buck!
 :clapper:
Steve,
I used CE heritage shaft with 100 grain insert and 125 muzzy phantom broad heads. The bow pulls 52lbs and I got a complete pass through. I was very excited about that. Bare shafts fly as good as feathered shafts.
I used Cedars last year and that is my goal in the near future. I have some 60-65 that are a bit to weak, and when I get the funds I would like to build some new 70-75 cedar shafts. Unfortunately they break a lot more because I shoot them into limestone bluffs, trees, etc. At least they smell good when they break.
Nice buck! Love those TallTines! How have you found the Muzzy Broadheads so far? I am using the 220 grain version for the first time this year with my talltines.
Excellent, thanks. Someday I'd like to shoot wood arrows too, but I have a ton of faith in the man made shafts.
Looks like this buck might be a touch larger than your avatar buck. That took some doing!
Great story, great deer!
Michael,
I was really happy with the phantoms. This was my first experience with them. The part I liked best was how sharp they were, and the four blades, which I think in the case proved to be very lethal. I think I switch to a different broad head every year though. Last year I used bear razorcaps which I also like. I did explode one phantom on a rock when I missed a grouse this sept, but I think that was to be expected.
Shooting carbons in the future, I think I would me most inclined to use the phantoms again.
great deer. congrats!!!
I love bucks like that. Way to go!
