Strewth! The adventures that fellow had! Killer whale, from a canoe; and polar bear, with no back-up rifle - both with a self-longbow! Great article on an almost unknown bowman in the latest TBM...
He was better golfer though!! I got a kick outta that fact.
Agreed Ben, Interesting fellow pulling some "stunts" with his selfbow. 102# wow!!!
Chuck
man i can't take it anymore. my local book store stopped carrying TBM!!!! i'm going to have to get a subscription i suppose. should of done a long time ago.....
Still waiting for my copy. Thanks for the tease Ben. :)
Fascinating story for sure Ben, read it last night.
That was a excellent article. I thought it was pretty cool that he lived in the same region where I'm from and familiar with. Wish there was a book about the guy. I'm sure it would make for some very interesting reading.
Bill Miller is a good writer and did an excellent job on Whaley.
Howard Hill notes in "Hunting the Hard Way" that the really good bowhunters use straight end bows. He names those of his time he considers so and Ralph Whaley was included.
Whaley was friends with the golfer Byron Nelson and hunted with him on occasion. Nelson used a rifle but Whaley still held to his bow.
Just finished the article....sounds as if the man was more about doing and not about trophies...I would like to find more about him.
Ben, its always great to read about such bowhunters ... in them the spirit of adventure must have burned pretty bright . It was a fine article for sure and I think we can all learn something from and admire Mr Whaley and those of his ilk .
