..."I"m a really good shot at twelve yards" Kind of.
I shot this deer last Thursday in North Dakota, my brother and I spent the week there and had a blast. I stalked a 4x3 Mule deer for 2.5 hours the day before and was able to close the distance to 17 yards. But once I got there I wasn't sure what to do next since I don't get to do something like this in Michigan so I whistled that didn't do anything so I then gave him a mouth bleat well after 4 or 5 he stood up looked at me with a bit of a surprised look on his face and then turned and bounded off like Mule deer do. The next morning I was back at the same CRP field figuring since I saw the same 4 Mule deer the last two mornings, one being that 4x3, I would set up near a wooded draw that they skirted each morning. I started on the West side of the draw since that was where the deer should be coming from but just after day break I had a feeling that I should slip over to the East side. I found a smaller draw that then drained into the main one and decided that it was the spot. I didn't take anything with me other than my bow and was sitting on the ground. I wasn't there for more that 20 minutes when I caught movement to my left and here stood this Whitetail he moved down this brushy finger and was going to go into the main draw like he had a thousand times before. This finger was 15 yards away and as he started down it he noticed me and started giving me the eye ball you know how they do it. I never expected anything from the East and thought I would have pleanty of time when I spoted the Mule deer to get ready for the shot. I'm a little embarassed to say that my bow was laying in front of me without an arrow knocked. And if you think that's bad just wait. Anyway he looked at me for maybe 20 seconds and then turned and walked back to the edge of the CRP and started to work his way around this little draw I was sitting in I'm guessing to catch my wind and since I was just a blob on the ground he couldn't make out my shape. So as he was doing this I was able get my bow up yank an arrow out of my quiver and get it on the string. He cleared the saplings in front of me and I was so suprised to even have a shot I looked up at the entire deer and yup you guessed it shot right over his back. Well he ran out in the CRP maybe 40 yards and then started working his way back to me but this time walking straight at me. I managed to get another arrow knocked and he kept coming and at 12 yards he turned slightly quarting to me and I thought it was now or never so this time I picked a spot drew and released and watched the arrow hit a good 2 inches from where I was looking. Ah look at me I'm quoting Barry again, sorry UB. Anyway I stood up and put my binos on him as he ran back into the CRP field he went less than 50 yards stopped looked around and went down. So as I said at the top "I'm a really good shot at 12 yards"... Kind of. Dave

Congradulations, on a fine buck! Thank you, for sharing a good hunting story to go with your trophy.
I've been in Traverse City many times and it's a great town with good people. There's some beautiful country in Michigan. I've bowhunted west of Cadillac, in the Manistee National Forest and just outside of Hastings, Michigan...both very nice.
