On Tuesday, 11/1/11 I killed my first buck with a recurve. Not only was it my first, but it was my very first encounter with a deer while hunting trad. After hunting with wheels for 19 years, I thought I was going to melt down when the opportunity presented itself. That didnt happen, thank god. I will finish this story when the greatbrownmissemall :) posts some pictures.
Congrat's, I'm sure its one you'll never forget.

Hes nice congrats. I dig the hat too. :notworthy:
So the story goes. There was no way I should have seen a deer that mornig let alone killed one. I got to the spot I was going to hunt and the wind was wrong. I found a decent tree on the up wind side of the trail. Start hanging my stand and find out I can only get about 12 feet into the tree, Wich puts me right at eye level with a small hump that the trail comes over. After getting set up, The wind changed again. It was blowing right down the trail. Now I'm bumming. While Im contemplating a switch in locations, I hear a stick snap. My focus is now on what made the noise. Then I see it, walking down the trail straight to me. I pick up my bow and get ready, The whole time thinking there is no way hes going to come my way. And like I thought he smelled me. He stops on the other side of the hump and stand on his hind legs trying to get a better whiff of me. But still he doesent bolt. He starts walking my way again. And wen it gets to the top of the hump it picks me off, just like I thought. But still he doesent run. He starts heading toward the edge of the ridge to head to leave the area and I draw my bow. I have him at about 20 yds broadside. and I choose not to take the shot. and as I relax my string he tuns again strait for me. He keeps checking me out. He realy wanted to know what that smelly blob in the tree was. He got behind some trees and I draw again this time at about 15 yds. He stops with his vitals behind the trees. When he turned his head I was able to let down. He took a few more steps toward me and decided he didnt like the blob and started to walk away. he got to the edge of the ridge again and had to stop one more tim to look at me, but I had already drawn my bow.
Now the moment of truth, I had him with a steep quartering away shot with his body angled slightly down hill. I had picked my spot on the last rib mid way on the deer and let the arrow fly. I watched the cedar arrow fly tward the deer and lost sight of it because of the dark fletchings. I heard the sound of an arrow hitting flesh. He ran about 40 yds down the ridge and started to walk. when he stoped all I could see was his back. He stood there for a few second and dissapeared with a loud crash. Then it hit me. Holding back all the adrenilan to make the shot all came flooding back. I hung up my bow and had to sit down so I woudnt fall from my tree. aftr seeing another deer about half hour later i figured it was time to noc another arrow.
He is by no means a big buck but is a trophy to me. and truthfully I didnt even know it was a buck until i went to retrieve it. Im hooked for life.
I hope you get a crack at that big boy. If my buck tag wasnt full this would be an entiely diffrent situatin. good luck in the morn.
Good job and love the Hat

congrats!!
Nice shooting..
Good stuff congrats.
Thanks for all the kind words. Im fond of the hat my self:) Ive learned alot from this site and the great guys that I have met in my area that are 100% traditional. I was unsure about giving up the wheels but Big River came to the club with a recurve I had to have. And the only way to buy said recurve was to sell the wheels. I dont regret a thing. This has got to be the most exciting bow season in my 20yrs bow hunting. And to top my season, after i filled my buck tag I had a huge 10pnt at 10yrds, and felt confident I cuda made the shot, if I had the tag. Thanks again to the entire trad gang community.
Congrats on your deer, and that hat is to cool.
Congrats!
