Title: A quest for the perfect hunting seat...continues!
Post by: PeteA on November 08, 2011, 10:03:00 AM
Hey Guys, I'm on a quest for the perfect hunting seat. I ground hunt in Southern Zone NY. Mostly sitting but move around a little bit in the afternoon. Usually hunt within a 1/2-3/4 of a mile from my car. I'm a weekend hunter usually. Hunt in all types of weather. We have a long season 10/15-12/31, bow only.
Looking for something I can sit on and be comfortable on for 4-5 hours at a time.  Looking for a comfortable seat, light weight, easy set up. I also like shooting from a seated position.

I've made seats, bought folding stools on the cheap. Looking for something good that will not break the bank.

My butt and back will thank you guys for any advise.

It is difficult to know what is comfortable for someone else and sitting 4 to 5 hours comfortably means a lazy bow recliner for many. As for the light weight, easy set-up as well as easy carrying and more, the nifty seat has it all in spades.

I use the basic design from Dean Torge's website but with a different tie system.  It hooks around a tree and can be slung over your shoulder when still-hunting.  Set it at a height so your knees are below our hips.  You can then stand without leaning forward first and your circulation is better.

1/2" ply by 14" wide.

Added a foam pad because I'm a wuss.

Roll-A-Chair.

Not camo, but danged comfy. Use them in a blind and with the fold up back rest... did well.

Over-built.

I have found nothing better than this seat here,,,, everybodys back rest is different so you simply place it just far enough from the tree to be the correct backrest.

I also use it free standing when I'm in a blind,,, NO NOISE while turning 360 degrees to shoot or follow anythign walking by,,,, I tie bow hoist rope or para cord to mine and I leave it in the correct height I like and just sling it around my back to walk in and out.

You really need to consider the Waldrop Pac Seat--I have owned every type of seat/chair made for hunting and this one is hands down the best, esp. for what you are describing.

Same. Ground hunter at heart here, and have used everything out there.

Roaming, Sitting for 30 minutes or 5 hours, the Waldrop PacSeat is by far the best in the industry.

I have yet to find a place that I wanted to tuck into, that this seat couldn't conform to...

You'll not e dissapointed!

I just got one of those Timber Ridge Magnum blind chairs as a gift. Cabela's has them on sale right now.
Spent a couple hours in it last Saturday and it was a pretty comfortable. It sits taller than most stools/chairs and was easy to shoot my longbow from. (In practice, not at anything else yet...)

I feel like the perfect hunting seat is about as alusive as the perfect quiver. You need more than one to fit the occasion.

If anyone ever invents a device that is both perfect seat and perfect quiver, he wins.

I have used the one stumpkiller drew out for you....works good, I'm leaning towards a Waldrop pac-seat. Tried to order one today but could not get threw on the phone. I have also used the Hunters Smart seat made in Vermont....you can google it to see it. that works well also. I'm good for about 3 hours then I have to stretch or move before my knees start to lock up....lol!

Hunterseat is amazing. Not sure about 4-5 hours, but....easy to set, solid, and quiet. Maybe the extra padding suggested would help. Made in the U.S.A. and is reasonable @$40.

I looked at the Huntersseat when I was down to Ray's, but I thought it was a bit heavy if you had to go very far. It is well made and very well priced, I don't know about 4-5 hours....lol!

I have a Magnus pack rack or rack pack or whatever its called.  It similar to the waldrop.  It doubles as a pack frame.  I have used it on both accounts with no complaints.  I also have a sling type seat from fanatic outdoors that is very comfy.  I have also used a seat from Big Game, not sure what its called.  The tree strap is kinda short and wont fit big trees.  As far as my favorite I would go with the fanatic over the Magnus only because it work on any slope, but you don't need a tree for the Magnus so it may be a toss up.

I've used the Niftseat for years...my boys go numb on me after 2 hrs... And that is with a foam pad on a belt and loop

The other challenge I've had is that once I've sat the seat for a hour or so, I cannot for the life of me get the "sticks" to unscrew till I get where I have a set of channel locks.

I've put teflon washers between the seat and first stick, lubed, everything...I get it together for the first sit, it's together till I get to the truck and a set of channel locks!  :(

From specs and pics, the Waldrop seems way too close to the ground for this old arthric 34" inseam legged buggar!

I've been using the Torges seat for many years and what I like about it is it is very easy to throw over your shoulder and can use on almost any tree. I also added a piece of padded carpet because it makes it easier to sit longer. I agree it's probably not the most comfy but it is just as comfy as most tree stand seats and the convenience of taking it any where for me far out weighs any negative aspects.  I like the tie off method previously described and I may make my next one slightly larger as well.

I have a nift-seat too and it is a very good seat but not for 4 or 5 hours, The best I have found is the tree seat by Millinium it is on sale in LL Bean for 63 bucks or so and free shipping,, this is the seat you can sit for hours in and never be uncomfortable at all, I use it moose hunting and for whitetails, It is the most comfortable seat out there with out a doubt.

My one and only concern with this seat is the black color. The tubing is olive drab, wish the webbing was also. A little spray paint is going to take care of that for next year.

Ron,
I did,and on the rear legs also. Top bar is padded if I lean it against a tree, legs are padded to keep it quiet. I slipped that camo pad in between the lacing until I spray it up.

I've told you guys before what the lightest, most comfortable hunting seat is, but no one seems to be listening.

I own a Nifty Seat and it's good for still hunting where you stop and use it for a half hour or less. I have one of the first pacseats crafted by Squirrelbait and it's a good solid, comfortable chair. Got a Magnus Rackpack and it's the best for transporting my double bull and seconds as a cool seat.

Now, the best of the best is the Hammock Seat sold by Fanaticoutdoors. Weights less than two pounds and folds up into a super easy package with it's own stuff bag. Hang it on your belt loop and be off. I used it for the past few days and never once got uncomfortable. It's the best piece of hunting equipment I've bought in a long time. You'll love it if you decide to purchase one. Good luck!

Oh, almost forgot, I'm pretty sure I remember reading that if you receive your Hammock Seat and don't like it, they'll refund your money.

I use the Niff-T-Seat. I have2 of 'em, I agree with Doc Nock, the pipes are a bugger to unscrew, so I keep one set low, one withthe longer pipe. Easy to carry, I just tuck it in the suspenders of my fanny pack, its out of the way, quiet and doesnt interfere with shooting if Im walkin and want to shoot a few judos, or in the extremely rare event I might actually walk up on a deer.

I find the best setup is whereyou have a tree you can lean against. I can sit on it for a good while, but with no ack support, I dont last long. Good overt all seat. I like the looks of that Waldrop seat, but at that price, not gonna happen.

The problem I have with the Nitfy seat is that sometimes my feet come off the ground and I fall over backwards. Also, sitting in it for a long time motionless can be difficult if I have to change positions for a slow incoming deer. At times it is necessary to move the feet when following a deer in order to keep my balance. For our deer that extra noise and motion can be a deal breaker. I blew a shot at a buck the other night because the deer was moving to my bow arm side and I lost my balance as I was drawing, I felt my feet getting light on the ground just I was releasing and you bet, that is the direction the arrow went as well. Good thing it was a clean miss in front of the deer.  Frustrated, the next day I went out with my left hand and my right hand bow and tried to see if one was better than the other. I had no problem falling backwards with either way, whenever I tried to shoot at anything that required me to twist back towards the bow arm side. A nice lady stopped when she saw me tumble to see if I was alright.  I like Huntmores even better now. Yes they are heavier to carry in, but the walk back to the car doesn't seem as long as it does after hours of steadying my self on the spike chair. I always try to tell myself to keep a tree against my back for support, but it is funny how the situations quite often do not allow me to do that.

After reading this thread I ordered a Hunter Seat. I am anxious to try it in our late deer season after Christmas. Looks like it will be great for still hunting with occasional sits.

I'll be using it on our upcoming hog hunt at Ray's. There's just no place to sit there without becoming fire ant food.

I've got a  model all built in my head, but I need a trashed "easy-up" canopy to use the legs for what I want to try.... Anyone have one and if my idea works, I'll make you a seat too!  :)

I like all aspects of the Nifty, but the seat.

I don't want to end up like those Touer De France bike riders!  :)

There are several threads on here about how wonderful they are and how comfortable. Really?

I posted this same set of questions on another Waldrop Pack Seat thread...so I'm seriously looking for answers with some data.

I look at it set up and I've seen about a dozen pics with guys sitting in them. To my eye, it would appear the thing is about 10" off the ground...which would be like sitting flat on my butt with my legs crossed indian style.

HOnestly, it appears to be about as high as those li'l beach chairs that your butt sits 3" off the sand...  :(

At nearing 64 with arthritis and a back surgery, I've never found any seat lower than about 18" to be comfortable to shoot off of or to be able to move, or get up, without having to roll over on my knees.

I just don't get how that can be so comfortable?

Perhaps it's being 6'2" tall and 33" inseams that makes all this "leg" extremities seem cumbersome to manipulate sitting that low to the ground...

Not grousing, but I would love someone who's not athletic and young, to take a video of using one, show getting in and out of it and show actual measurements of how high off the ground one's butt sits!

Additionially, while I'm airing my questions, it would appear that the front is higher than where ones buttocks sit...that would mean my knees are higher than my butt!

Are any of my visual perceptions accurate?

When I did tree stands, I shopped till I found them with 22" high seats... so I could stand easily without grunting or having to pull myself up.

Thanks for any real feedback on dimensions and data... I've seen/read plenty of "it's the best" but that doesn't constructively answer my questions and the website seemed light on actual measurements.

I'm trying to figure out how the Hammock Seat is such a good seat for us guys shooting trad gear. I can kind of see it for short compounds, but even then I'm trying to figure out how well you can move with your butt plopped down in a sling style seat. Seems like you couldn't lift out of it easily and without much movement if you needed to adjust shooting position. Looks comfortable for sure, but doesn't seem practical.

I agree with Doc Nock and Yukon Chuck.

I am a 6'2 man that is highly inflexible. I have to have a REAL seat. A seat that has both butt, lower back and upper back support, and that places me high enough up that I am at less of a 'crouched' sit and almost a high sit, where I can easily stand.

The Waldrop seat appears to sit you way too low. I also think that the bar would dig into my back and get on my nerves after a while. Furthermore, it appears as though it would fall over if I tried to rotate too quickly etc.

As for the hammock seat, I agree that it would restrict movement and expansion by squishing you up like a little ball. I can only imagine fighting with that thing and trying to get leaned up and forward enough to actually take a decent shot.

Of ALL the seats on this thread the only one that looks really good to me is the Millenium Tree Seat from LL Bean:

http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/66657?feat=8866-GN3&attrValue_0=Black

Now that sucker looks comfortable. However, I would even ADD another back and butt pad to make it even more comfortable.

I guess you could say that I am extremely picky when it comes to comfort and my deer stands or deer seats.

The only tree stand that I find myself 100% comfortable in is the Tree Lounger, which is huge and zero gravity mesh with a full foot rest and weighs almost 40 lbs.

Noc doc: bad back, the exact reason I use strap on tree seats, my own Torges design and Huntmores. Now I know about weight of the Huntmore, and you need to be a little tactful, physically capable and mechanically savvy like my 59 year old wife to be able to carry one out, slap one together and adjust it in 3 minutes, so perhaps they are not for everyone. but once they are in place they are easy to get out of maneuver for a shot and sit relaxed in a ready to shoot position.  If what you all are after is a nap why not just take out your favorite lawn chair. I have two that are real comfortable, however, my wife has to get the neighbors to come over and lift me out of one. I have found that the walk out to my favorite mile from the car spot to be a longer walk heading out compared to my Nifty seat, but a shorter walk heading back to the car compared to a long sit on the Nifty seat. Plus I missed a buck this year because I had to turn and lost my balance enough for me to miss with the Nifty seat so now I am mad at it and i don't care how easy it is to carry.

Don't really have too many trees around central Tx. that are good for the wrap around types.  Cedars and live oaks mostly, and most of the live oaks are so big around you'd need alot of rope.  I bought one of the double bull magnum blind chairs.  Sits high up off the ground, has a good carry strap, ain't that heavy or bulky, sets up quick, is comfy, and has a back rest.  Easy on my back and my knees, and is nice to shoot from.

It works especially well when setting up on steeply inclined terrain, and gives a nice level quiet place for your feet, whether setting or standing..

I raised my seat about 2" for the same reasons Doc.

LW also offers a strap on seat for ground hunting.. I have made my own version and it works fairly well, but the stand works better.

Also have a Summit trophy seat which is very comfortable for long sets, but a bit bulky to carry and not the easiest to shoot our of.

I carry and use a walk stool.
http://www.amazon.com/Walkstool-WA22-Comfort-Portable-Folding/dp/B000N2DHQ4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1324133915&sr=8-1
I'm good for a couple of hours in it and they are definitely built well. But obviously, there is no back support.
Where I hunt there is never a constant wind direction so I tend to move around quite a bit anyways. After a couple of hours I figure I've stunk up that area enough for the day and move on down the road.    :D

It's real interesting how different we are, yet the same. I use a Niff-T-Seat and have no problem taking the seat apart after use, or loosing my balance. I have also tried taking shots at targets in all different angles and have had no problems. I find it pretty comfortable though it's true one can't sit in it for hours on end. It's versatility includes being easy to move around with, light, quiet, and easy to set up and take down, and stows away easily, I don't even know I am carrying it. I can sit in the middle of a field or against a tree if I so desire. Now all I have to do is find the time to go hunting more often.

I'm 40 years old 6'2" with a 34" inseam. Granted I havent had any back problems, but I have no problems getting in and out of the pacseat. Very comfortable and very easy to shoot out of. It's very versital, easy to carry and it's the only seat I've ever had that I can set more than 2 hours at a time without squirming around to get comfortable. I don't use the leg very often, I usually just lean it against a tree. Other than trying one, it would be hard to explain exactly how great this seat is. God made everybody differant so what works for some might not work for others. Good luck fella's in your quest for the perfect chair. As for me, I've found it!!

My Nifty seat caught me when I had to turn with my feet up hill, down hill with my back against a tree and on level ground not a problem.  Trying to very quietly turn until my feet are uphill, big problem.  With my back condition balancing on it, even on level ground, gets to me eventually.  Like most things some work better than others depending on the use and situation. Other than the minor hassle of  packing and assembly the Huntmore works in any situation.

I have a chippewa  wedge lock and purchased the seat also. You can buy the strap or chain for on the tree. The strap makes for quiet long carrys easy. BUT you do need a tree to attach to. Set at any height you wish. Very  nice seat.

I ended up making a Toque's seat after seeing the design on page one of this thread.  I added an old seat from my summit climber that I had to replace due to a torn strap.  It is easy to carry.

Not my hunting clothes, working in the yard today and took a break to shoot these picts.

Sets up quick and quiet (I have only used it once since I made it). Less than a minute.

With the added seat
(http://i1118.photobucket.com/albums/k611/maineaclb/008.jpg)

Can be adjusted to different heights depending on need.
That is about toilet seat height  :)

And low.  With the thick cushion and soft back rest it is very comfortable and quiet.  It is easy to spin quietly or slip off onto a knee if needed.

The Torges seat easy and cheap to make, the pad set you use looks good. Should be able to sit for a spell!

Looks good Maineac! I got to make a pad for mine.
The Torges seat is ridiculously light weight and easy to carry.
I like that you showed how it can be used on large size trees.

Nice thread as I have been pondering this question for a while now.

Nice Maineac. I think they would be the ticket in the forests like you have back east.

There is plenty of river bottom round here that doest contain enough trees to hunt effectively from the air. Mostly thick willow and tall grass.  This stuff is thick and the natural bedding areas for many of the deer.  So I have been trying to decide on a seat to hunt from the ground.  I went with the Stag ATS and ordered it yesterday.  I needed a free standing seat with a backrest so I narrowed it down to the Stag ATS or the Waldrop pac-seat.  Between those two I thought the swivel seat would be nice when trying to cover two trails in the sea of willows. The huntmore looks nice for my application but doesnt pack as well as the ATS and costs almost 3 times as much.  I found a stag ATS for $82.  Cant wait to try it out as I have never done much ground hunting.

For my Torges style seats, I wear the pad on my belt.  i have several out, no one ever wants to steal them, they must look cheap. That way when the wind shifts and it always does, I don't have rehang the seat, I just move to downwind of the trail seat.

randy,

Reviewed your Stag ATS... that seems to be a good remedy.

Swivel. Compact. Lightweight. Backrest the reviews said had to have 1/4" of material removed from the low side where it rests for a stop to allow more incline...

Individual adjustment legs for uneven ground and under big gnarly tree roots... and it swivels.

Looks like a good go for anywhere from what you paid to the MFRP of $110.

Yeah Doc it seemed like a good choice to me.  It may take a little longer to set up but the ambush spots I'll be sitting in will be trimmed and thought out in advance for the most part so 3-4 minutes to set up the legs into the seat will not bother me much.  I like the idea of the adjustable height legs to deal with different heights of grass/brush etc that I will have to shoot over.

Thanks for the reminder about shaving plastic to allow more recline.  I read that same thing some where too.

Randy,,

I believe it was in the reviews on yoru site where it's listed under $83... but then I viewed a lot of sites on Google selling that seat...all the way to the MSRP $110!

Anyway, couple guys just shaved off 1/4" from where it contacts the base part so it leaned a bit more.

Only question remaining is the back removable?

I saw one under a Black Powder listing that had no back?!!!

As for set-up time, pfft... only thing that is QUICK is what's already there! Well, that and a dairy farmer I knew had one legged stool that he wore with a belt so it stuck out like a broom handle behind him, but he could just plop down and milk old Betsy, then Irma...etc.

Danges looking thing to walk in the milk barn and see him walking around with this broom handle looking like it was sticking out his butt!

You cannot go wrong with the pac seat.  It is expensive, and I thought I would never own one.  I was hunting with some folks and one of the guys had one.  Its like sitting in a lounge chair, seriously. Its even more comfortable than most of the chairs in my house.  I have the hammock seat, and I made a torges style seat.  These are both great seats also.  I like the hammock seat if I am hiking for more than 3 or 4 miles.  Other than that I will always grap the pacseat.  If you can, find one you can sit in before you buy.

Good luck

I used to use a milking stool in the barn, like Doc said. I think walking around the woods with it strapped on would hit brush when you turned, make noise; they also have a spring that is creaky.

But I did think of it...

Well, my pac-seat finally came today.....a bit late for the end of the season but that's OK. I opened the bow and was really amazed how well made and thought out it seems to be. I have to do some tinkering to put a pack or fanny pack on it...maybe both? I set it up in the living room and sat it it. It's a good thing it doesn't have a head rest ....I'll be doing the ZZZZZZZZZZZZ.. next fall on those warm October days   :biglaugh:

I used the Hammock Seat this year.  Extremely comfortable.  As for getting out of it, no problem if you set it high.  I don't have to stand to shoot.  It swings side to side and I don't have any problem with clearance like rigid seats.  I'm going to buy a second one.  It seems that every time I find a great product, they stop making it.  I want a spare!   Dick

Get what you pay for IMO. Pacseat while expensive is the perfect mix of comfort and mobility for all hunting occasions. Have yet to find a rocky slope, log filled thicket, or swampy area that my pacseat couldn't set up in.

Yet when the wind changed it was back on my back in a jiffy and off I went to a better set up.

Best seat for me. And I've tried everything under the sun. Believe me.

Spend the money, and your search is over, and you have a product that will outlast your hunting days.

1/4 away, if your talking about the hunters Smart Seat made in Vermont I have one and have used it for 3 years. It works very well and is light and packable. Well made and very silent. You just have to have the right set up and it's not always possible.

Does the Pac-seat  have a weight limit on it? I'm a little chunky and have been known to break a few seats. There is no shame like picking your self up off the ground with a deer watching.

I saw Cabelas turkey seat in the store the other day which looks will work great.  It's low to the ground and no moving parts for noise and a back rest.  Tried it in the store and should work, I cant the bow so a straight up shooter will have problems.  Seems very comfortable and would only have to lean forward to get into shooting position.  I'll try to find a link later and sorry if already mentioned in the prior 7 pages, I read the 1st 4 months ago  :)

I have a Niff-T-seat for years but the seat area is so small that my privates go to sleep. Plus with my bad lower back and the need for back support when seated only place I used it was next to trees so now I'd like something with a bigger seat and more padding.
