If you have even the slightest chance of hunting tomorrow and Thursday I'd strongly suggest you do whatever possible to get out there. Last night it rained off/on all night with gusts to 25 MPH. Today the prediction is 100% chance of rain with winds to 25 MPH. Wednesday morning at 4 AM it's still 95% chance of rain BUT at 5 AM the front blows through dropping the predicted rain to 0%, the winds dropping down and the temps right at 34 degrees. Absolutely perfect in my opinion for the rut to blow wide open. Novemeber 9th and 10th will very likely be the two best days of whitetail hunting all season. Get out there and best of luck. BW
So Barry is this you promice to me some thing good is going to happen to me. I have to days off.

UB,
I'm hoping they'll still me moving on Friday. Veterans Day is a Federal Holiday and I'll be off work Friday. I'll be in the woods Friday and Saturday!
I should note that our season here in the Lowcountry of SC has been open since August 15th. However, I won't go into the woods until we've had at least one good frost. We had three good ones last week. The chiggers shouldn't be a problem. They have a tradition of eating me alive! :( :scared:
I'll be carrying my Brazilian Rosewood riser Tall Tines T/D recurve to the woods. The riser was cut out of the same piece of Brazilian Rosewood that the riser for your Tall Tines was cut from.
Bill
Thanks for the tip Barry, I'll see if I can get away!! todd
Why didnt you tell me this 3 months ago, I would have taken vacation :readit: Thats how much notice my employer requires for scheduled days off..
Now if you would only export a few of those big Iowa whitetails to my area of Wyoming, all would be well!
Thanks, Barry. I kind of feel like Michael Jordan just told me it was time to play ball!
By the way, is it just my imagination, or is your neck starting to swell in your avatar picture? I guess it is time, indeed!
Thanks again for the "heads up"
thats my favorite time to hunt ,during a light drizzle in a pop up blind .or right after a heavy rain night before with temps dropping..
Looks like the front moves off late Wednesday night here is Mid-Michigan so an all day sit on Thursday looks to be in the mix for me. So glad I took this week off!
Thanks it has been slow here in Mo so far this trip and have heard the rut is running a week late. This is just what we are hoping with this weather and will be in the woods,
I've been ready:::Now tell it to the deer
Hoping the front pulls through my area by dawn on Friday. If not I'll be out as soon as it leaves on Friday. Hopefully the bucks will start moving once the rain stops.
I agree with wildmanSC I'm hoping their still moving on Friday cause I'm not getin off till then. My boss don't buy I'm sick during deer season. But I do appreciate the heads up. Good luck to those of you who can get out there.
I wish I could sneak out. I'm booked solid with meetings until Friday. With the daylight savings time change I can't make it out after work either.
That same front made it's way across MT this weekend, and I've been enjoying it's aftermath here. Bucks are moving, but it's just starting for us, really. Still, I agree, even though it's been through , the temps behind have remained cool, and winds down (nock on wood) and with the moon at full and coming up in the early evening.....a good combo for some action, I think.
Get it out here by Friday or Saturday and all will be good.
Just looked - front going through Thursday night/Friday early and warming Saturday.
Cough, cough..... Uh, oh I might be coming down with something ;) ;)
I took this week and part of next week off for my hunting vacation. This morning I woke up to rain so I decided to save a vacation day and head into work. Now with your news, I don't feel so bad about not being hunting today. The past 4 days I've seen several bucks trailing does, but no hard chasing so far.
I have Wed, Thurs, and Friday off. I hope somthing good happens. Sat is the start of gun season, so I hope to get it done in the next few days.
If the 9th and 10th are the two best days, why didn't you wait for them?
It is 65 and sunny in Pennsylvania today. I did manage to see a thin racked 8 point meander by at 9:30 this morning and got some great video footage of him messing around with stuff. I like these mid morning hunts this time of year. Gonna head out again tonight into the heat :-)
I am going out this evening, and on thur morning!!!
Only one Tradgang, where else can you get a tip from the top.
We can only hope!!
:readit:
Now dang it, I read that post at lunch time while at work. How am I supposed to concentrate while thinking about that. thanks alot lol. Luckily i was thinking the same thing and im taking thurs and friday. Thanks for the tip.

LOL......
I've gotta work tomorrow, but have Thursday and Friday of this week and Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of next week to spend in the Southeastern Ohio woods.
I'm gonna listen to Uncle Barry, and perhaps some of his knowledge will rub off on me.
Winterhawk1960
I was thinking I would try to get out in the am. Is it the same for Indiana as it is in Iowa?
Thanks for the tip Barry!

somethings gotta happen!!................... seems like all my deer have disapeared... :dunno: hope they weren't ubducted by aliens.
I have hunted all or part of 15 of the last 17 days. I still have 3 days left on my vacation and plan on spending all that time in the woods. The rain is supposed to hit here in the morning with some wind and a drop in temp.
I have tomorrow morning off til noon and all day Thursday and Friday off. Got to get it done before gun season Saturday. Glad to see great minds think alike Uncle B. ;o)
Ya thanks for teasing us westerners who cant do that!!!
it is now snowing and it sounds good on the roof of the camper! The temp is currently 27 degrees. We are looking forward to some action tomorrow.
Cyclic-rivers, Relax, quit your job, you'll live longer.....
Good luck to all of you who will have to be sick... on the 9th and 10th...
I gotta think that Friday will be special - the date will be 11/11/11
We're a bit behind you here, with a bad blow/wet coming Friday and then the all clear Saturday. I'll be up early that day.
Thanks Barry but in my neck of the woods we don't even start thinking about the rut for about another month. I'd still rather be hunting than at home mowing the grass.
Good luck to all of y'all!
Bisch
The front is here now and still around abit tomorrow. I have friday off and fear my stands will have 6,8 inches of wet snow on them that will freeze thursday night. We'll see.......
OH BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have tomorrow off and man am I pumped :knothead:
Thx Uncle Barry
I went during lunch today....11-2....Barry....where's that cold weather???...its 70 degrees here!!!! :campfire:
Windy, raining since yesterday here in South Eastern Wis, with some snow this afternoon, still windy. All this is dying down tonight. 27 degrees for the low overnight. WNW winds at about 10 MPH, in morning, will be sitting hoping for good things to happen.
I thought the same, Biggie! :biglaugh:
When I read this post earlier, then I lost phone/dial-up service, here, could'nt respond!
11-12 has been good for me here.
Gun season starts here, Saturday. :(
It's raining here in PA as I type this and should be all done by the morning with temperatures dropping. And guess what...I am off tomorrow and will be in the woods. I hope Barry's prediction holds for PA too
I Sat all day from dark to dark and saw one small bit of chasing. Does fed under the cover of their bedding area and the young bucks were out cruising but they weren't responding to any calls or rattling.
The rain cleared out of our area this morning around 04:30 and we had a cool NW wind all day with clear skies.
I'm off tomorrow ....sit all day in my Guido Web by my Smokey Trap in a greenbriar laced cutover bedding area with multiple trails.
north wind, temps dropping, stand has not been hunted this year, stand on heavy covered trails between water, food and bedding, clear skies and windy!
Perfect recipe ....
Sat from daylight till 11:30,0 deer, 2:00 till dark, 5 does and fawns. Woke up to 3"of snow with a N.W.wind whipping the trees around, putting on a extra layer today. We'll see what happens this morning. Good Luck Guys.
I'll be down in your neck of the woods this weekend Barry, with camera in hand. I'm not hunting here at home due to a pinched nerve issue in my right arm. It's much better but I'd rather not chance a bad shot, so I'm headed down there to see how close I can get to photograph or video some activity. I'd have been down sooner, but we have colleges to visit. Should be fun though! Maybe we'll see you around town.
Absolutely of no help to me......I don't live in Iowa with a good deer population.
Flat around here today. Very little deer movement.
Not much here either, seen a doe and fawn this morning, another by itself but couldn't tell what it was. had a small 6 pt. chase a doe under me at 3:15. That was my day, hoping for better things tomorrow.
5 different bucks chasing today. Watched an arrow sail over the back of a nice 10... Hopefully he comes back tomorrow. It's on in northern MN.
I sat from sun up till dark, never saw a deer till 3:55 PM then I had 7 does and fawns in a picked bean feild till dark. Not one single buck.

Good call Barry!
Bro and I took 1 wed and 1 thurs!
I spent the entire day sitting a funnel between two thickets in Ohio. I never laid eyes on one single deer...........now my wife, on the other hand saw a shooter come through about 5 minutes after a doe came through below her. To far for a shot, so maybe next time.
Winterhawk1960
OK......the cold will be here in the AM....28 degrees....hopefully I can get out for a couple of hours tomorrow!!!!!!!
Sunup to 11 on Wed saw 1 spike cruising.
Sunup to 11:30 and 1:30 til dark today. Saw 4 does and 3 yearlings and was this close to layin' down a big tom turkey.

YEP Sun up till sun down.....A nice shooter at 8:00 (down wind and he got out of there), bumped a doe going to a different stand at 10:30 and nothing the rest of the day :knothead:
I hve no idea whats going on.............makes no sense to me! This year is by far the oddest iv seen :dunno:
Here is SW MO we had shooting light 24 hrs a day the last couple of days. Not one cloud to cover the moon. I did see one chase yesterday at a distance, but the bruisers were not cruising their territory here. Think the moon shut things down during legal shooting hours. LF
Just an update on what I saw. My findings were very similar to Gatekeepers. On 11/9 I sat from dark to dark. Only saw seven deer total. 3 does and four bucks. 1 little guy; 2 medium and one big one. He was a beauty. 6x6 that I bet was 23" inside. low/mid 160's. All the bucks were alone just cruising. All the does were also alone. I went two three hour plus stretches without seeing a deer. On 11/10 I again sat all day in another area. Saw a total of 11 does and 4 bucks. 1 small, 1 med. and two pretty nice ones. One mid 140" 5x5, probably 4.5. And another 5x4 that was mature, probably 140" and 5 yr.old. I played with them some. Absolutely no responses to rattling, wheeze, grunting, bleating, etc. I had the 5x4 and the 6x6 stop and take a couple steps towards me with a wheeze but they could see there was no deer there and walked away. I feel the best is yet to come. The night before 11/9 we got about 1/2" of snow and it was very windy during the night. I noticed a lot of movement in the snow during the night. More than I expected. And several scrapes worked over in the snow before first light. I really thought the cold weather after a day and a half of moisture/winds would get them going. So much for my "expert" advice. Hang in there guys. BW
I shot a 135 class buck this morning just cruising, had some ground shrinkage thought he was a little bigger. My buddy saw a 150-160 class 10 point but got his wind at 80 yards. Saw a few small bucks cruising this evening.
Hunted yesterday morning didn't see any movement. Hunted today with high winds dark to dark and saw three does and two bucks. I have to work tomorrow dark till late and going to give it a go Sunday.
Pulled an all dayer again today, I saw 1 spike buck at 4:50 PM What the heck I've hunted Iowa for the last 11 years and never seen any thing like this. I know our deer population is down and it's a full moon. I'm sleeping in tomorrow and taking my daughter Mattie out tomorrow afternoon maybe she can being me a little luck. I had this week off and logged a ton of hours on stand and have only seen 10 -15 deer all week.

I had a great day on 11-11-11, saw deer all day. 4 were bucks, one decent 8 pt. couldn't get a shot.Stood 20 yds away with a tree covering his chest then the doe drug him off, watched them for 3 hours before they went out of sight. My brother shot a 6 pt. last night, his 1st with a trad bow. Looking good around here after that nasty weather cleared out.
Barry called it in my neck of the woods (east of Kansas City). On 11-9 I had a nice buck at 8 yards but the right side was broken off at the brow tine. I saw several small and medium bucks chasing does in the am. At 2pm saw a huge 170 class buck cruising, got winded. 4pm saw the biggest typical buck that I have ever seen alive, he chased some does by me at mach 10 then stood in a field with them for a few minutes. At 4:30 I had a 130 class 8 point come cruising in. He would not respond to calling. The other two guys that I hunt with also saw bucks in the 160 range. No shots!!
11-10 was similar with most activity from 1pm to dark.
11-11 all went quiet.
11-12 the orange army appears. I am now rooting for the deer. The timing of the Missouri gun season makes no biological sense!!!
I couldn't agree more, Bob. The timing of Missouri's gun season is dumb. :smileystooges:
No action this AM.(To clarify, I mean while hunting...for deer)
Things were different today, didn't see a deer until 10:00,a buck chasing a doe then another group of 3, pretty sure one was a decent buck but they were hard to get a good look at. No deer tonight but saw 3 bears. It was warm and windy today, I hate when that happens.
Mattie and I got on stand at 1:45 PM had a buck about 135" come into the CRP at 2:15 and beded down about 150 yards away we could just see his antlers in the grass, and he was still laying when we left at dark, we saw no other deer.
doug77
Hunted with my daughter since Thursday, just got home. We didn't see a single deer during shooting hours. Last night, at dark I took the bow in the house and went back out to sit and see what ever. AT 9:00 PM I saw the first doe and a few bucks. I couldn't tell what they were, only had the moon light to see. Definitly moving at night with this moon in my area.
Firday was the day for me. Big bucks gone wild. No shot, but now I know who I am after:)
Saturday was a bust. Today I was not able to hun. Now to pick the best day this week.....Barry?
The snow turned to ice got the best of me. 6 to 8 inches of the wettest snow possible came down Wednesday and froze up solid Thursday night. Talk about noisy, and then chissel out your stand on top of it. Saw 3 fri evening, they were moving VERY slow. 1 Sat morning moving slower. Then Sat the thaw came and all the ice started falling out of the trees. In the evening the deer started to move. Saw 4 an hour and a half before close. Sun morning was better. Saw 7 against the snow in the moon light before I left the trailer, then 6 more on stand but nothing close enough for a shot. Next week is gun season here.
