I am new to traditional archery, I have been shooting with training wheels for 22 years. I just traded a bear carnage for a schafer silvertip longbow. I cant wait to get the silvertip and fling a few arrows. Are silvertips pretty good longbows, Here is a link to the bow I am getting.

Welcome to the fire, and any longbow is a good longbow. Practice your form(its a little different from wheels)and stick with it.
Welcome! You certainly hit the ground running with a Schafer
that's a premier longbow ya got there, she's a beauty. congrats on the trade!
now, trad archery/bowhunting is different from playing with wheels, and there's lots to learn about gear and form. give a click on the first link in my sig line, it may offer some assistance in your transition to the harder but more satisfying side of bowhunting. :D
No, Schafer Silvertips are not just "pretty good" longbows: they are VERY good bows. You are starting your traditional journey with a top of the line bow. And that one looks like a real beauty.
You have a great future in the 'Traditional Way', judging by your choice in a first bow, Well Done!
Welcome to the 'Gang, honored to have you join our little campfire. :campfire: :archer2:
I am glad to be here, and hope to learn a lot from you guys and gals. I hope I can make the trasition pretty smooth, I shot a wheel bow instinctive for 10 years before I went to a sight, hopfully it doesnt take me to long to start hitting what Im looking at.
You should fall right back into it since you have previous experience with instinctive shooting. Where you may need to focus is on form and release and strengthening your back muscles. That Silvertip ain't no compound and won't draw like one either. You got a beautiful bow there. Love those snakeskinned limbs. Good luck with the bow and the transition.
What would be some good arrows to order to start out with.
Carbons would be my choice due to them being so durable. As far as spine goes you will have to have someone determine your draw length. And go from there. What was your draw on the compound?
Welcome!
Best of luck!!
Terrific 1st bow!!!
Welcome to Tradgang!
My draw length on a compound is 29"
Welcome to the Gang! :wavey: :campfire: :archer2:
and congrats on the new bow
I have never shot a Silvertip but from what I have read on this site I would conclude that thaey are very good bows!
Welcome to the fun side!

Your draw with your new bow will probably be around 27" (have it checked to be sure) which should put your draw weight at around 44/45 lbs., I.M.O. a very good weight to begin and not a bad one to stay with. I would try a .600 or .500 spine carbon and a 1916 or 2016 aluminum should be close. If you do not have the advantage of someone knowledgable to help you set-up arrows, a great book with a section on arrow selection written in layman's terms is Anthony Camera's "Shooting The Stickbow". You can always post here as well, there are many savy guys willing to help.
Let the adventure and legacy begin

You done good..Congrats!
WELCOME :wavey: Now the fun begins :archer2:
Another Kentucky boy, I like it. If the Shafer LB is anything like their recurves you have started at the top. Good trade and...
Welcome from Kentucky!
Way to go. Like starting your driving in a Caddilac. Alums are a bit easier to tune, but carbons last longer. Arrow tuning (http://bowmaker.net/tuning.htm) Here is a link to a great piece on turning your arrows. Rob's link at the top of the page for beginers is great also. I came over from shooting a wheelie instinctive so I think your transition should be pretty smooth. Great people here with lots of helpful advice and a vast store of knowledge. Enjoy the switch.
Oh yeah, that will work just fine  . Good specs as well.
You done real good. If I had made that trade with a friend I would feel like I screwed him..congrats!...PR
Nice bow! Enjoy!
I am definatley pulling 50#, I have a easton digitial bow scale that I checked the weight with and I am pulling 50.4#s. I am loving traditional so much I think I am going to try to trade my 2011 prime shift for a recurve.
Congrats, now you will learn what fun really is!
oh my friend life is over as you knew it......
Welcome!!
Well that's a good start.
