So, I thought I'd try to make some stone arrowheads. I figured that I need to start practicing and make some now so that I can use them to hunt with next deer season after I make myself a bow.
Here are my first, second, third and fourth attempts at making heads from left to right.
The big one is around 2'' or so. It's fun. I made birdpoints from the small scrap flakes I had from breaking spalls(#1) and knapping the big arrowhead(#3 & #4).
I have found myself a new hobby :)
I figured that if a caveman could make them then I should be able to as well.

Cool!

Good job.
They really look good
Nice
They look good and deadly. You're a natural!
AWESOME  Its been about 10 years since I've made some arrowheads so I know they take a lot of time and hard work :archer:
Great job! Interested to know how you learned?
Nice work!

Well, I'm a bit of an autodidact. I didn't grow up with an outdoors kind of dad or one that was around the house much. So, I tend to teach myself how to do things and I read up on what interests me. I've taught myself how to fish, fly fish, tie flies, shoot guns, hunt, use bows, etc.
But with this I watched a YouTube video from Billy Berger with him working over a couple of pieces.

I had a couple of small antlers lying around I was going to use for knife handles (so much for that) and I cut the tines off and fashioned tools to knap with.
I cut the main beam(between T2 & T3) to create a soft hammer to flake, I picked up a smooth river stone from our river for a hard hammer, I used two tines for general pressure flaking and another for cutting the tangs that I grinded down to a smaller tip, and I picked up a $6 bag of thick scrap leather from Hobby Lobby to use for a leg and hand pad.
From there it was just playing. I just envisioned the shape that I thought I could make out of the size of obsidian that I had and then I got to work trying to thin it down and shape it.
Beautiful! It'll fit very nice on tokin cane shafts. Congratulations.
I took a break from graphics creation and thought I'd try making a long birdpoint from a flake. I'm surprised I didn't break off the tip. Its about 1/4'' shorter than before because I had to redo the base since one of my pressure flakes took off too much material while cutting a notch.
I have to say that I don't really like this obsidian. It's FAR too brittle. I need to try and find some good chert or flint.

That is cool!
Also try dacite
Keokuk is nice to work with. Dacite is like obsidian but not as brittle or as dangerous to knapp. Keep up the good work!
