Straight grip, dished or locator
My three Hills have locator grips, but I recently bought a Chally Special Hill-style longbow with a straight grip that is also perfect for my hand.
I like mine dished, My Jerry Hill was dished and the Half breed I have now is also! I had a Cheetah that had the locator and it wasn't good for me! All the bows were about the same poundage!
Ive never been able to get used to a locator grip, I feel like it forces my hand in to an awkward position. Just one guys opinion.
My new Hill has a dished grip and I love it!!!
I would like to try a straight grip, MMMMMM maybe my next Hill???
Dished for me.
I have Straight, Locator and Dished on my Hills.
But, the ones I like best have Dished Grips.
Matt
I like them all but a dished grip is my favorite!
I like dished.
Darren
I like a slightly dished grip on my bows.

Much prefer my straight grips but have a couple of slight dish also.
Well, it looks like I'm the odd one out!
I prefer the straight grip. It helps me to hold the bow in the proper position for shooting this type of bow (the Hill style longbow).
so far, looks like most folks don't prefer the straight grip. :scared: :D
What are you looking at Rob, the poll shows the straight by 41%, dished is 30% and locator 28%
Im with Aussie....
I like a slightly DSished, about 1/8" deep is all.
For us novices, how about someone putting up some pictures of the different grips, and listing them. Even though I don't have a Hill style bow doesn't mean I'm not going to have one in the future.
Thanks
All mine are straight, and I like'em. But my old Robertson R/D bow has a dished grip and it is the most comfortable grip I have shot on a longbow. When I get the GUTS to take a rasp to one of my straight handles I'm gonna convert it.
I think the dish helps force the heel down where its suposed to be...maybe its just me.

Both of my Hills have the locator grip. I can't get used to the straight grip.
What are the inherent advantages
and disadvantages to these grip options guys?
ron w, 41% is not the majority! The majority--58% chose a different grip than the straight grip. :readit: :saywhat:
Personal preferece Rossco. IMO, folks that shoot recurves AND lb's often choose locator grips possibly for easier transition between the two.
DM, straight is the majority of the 3.
Sorry, Stritera, but straight is the PLURALITY of the three--majority of the voters went for something else. Not trying to be picky--just trying to use terms correctly.
OK.I misread the details...my fault....... :notworthy:
NJLoco: If you go to this link, there are photos of all three grip types:

Oh no Ben, If he goes to that web site he's sure to get the bug!!!
NJLoco dont do it!!

To be honest I have never tried a dished grip. But I have tried both a straight grip and a locator grip. Of the two I definitely prefer the locator to the straight grip.
I like them all, but the straight grip tear drop shape is a hair more consistent for me.
OK Dave, Straight is most common of the three. Easy enough to comprehend.
How much locator can we cut into the handle and still call it a "hill" style bow?
I really love the solid locked in feeling I get from the straight grip. I had a dished grip but never found it as consistant as the deep wedge or tear drop grip.

Call 'em anything you like, Good Sir! What matters are the feelings of satisfaction, heritage and fun that I get from walking the bush with them. To me, they remain true American longbows built by Craig Ekin at Howard Hill Archery. Be blessed!
I have straight grip on my Northern Mist and my Hill Big 5. I like the Hill best. It fits my hand perfect and I have no problem with consistent hand placement.
I keep my Hills on the straight and narrow. That's the way Howard liked em too.

For me, the dished grip just feels right.
Anecdotally, I feel I can draw a much heavier bow with a dished grip. I don't know exactly why. Maybe the angle of the wrist feels more solid.
All my 80# - 100# bows are dished.

At the risk of being labeled a troublemaker, I'll add just a few more comments to the thread. I do so realizing that I'm steering the thread off course a bit.
I see your point and don't entirely disagree with you. But, I'd add that Crag Ekin would probably agree that he builds American
Flatbows He would probably also tell you that he is the only one building Hill bows since he is the only one who owns the tradename. Looking through Craig's list of stock bows, I see only one out of the 30 listed that has a "slight locator" grip.
The bows I have built are American Flatbows, but most don't have the distinctive features that would make them a true Hill style bow.
To get back on topic, I sorta prefer a bit of locator on my flatbows but also shoot a straight grip quite often.
For ma locator
Nice picture of MY BOW there, Ron. :biglaugh: Yes sir, like Ron, I like 'em straight and narrow. That's why I bought that bow.
Personally i prefer a straight grip , and if thats not availiable I settle for a straight grip ... short of any other options availiable I'd instead have to get a straight grip ...
Did I mention I like straight grips ...
Slight Dish. Pics of a few of Howard's bows seemed to have a slight dish to them. Works great.

I prefer a straight grip, but it definitely needs to fit my hand size. I've got a Halfbreed that had a slight dish to it. It was much too small for my hand, so I built it up to fit with leather layers. It's straight now and I love it.
I also have a Cheetah that has a locator grip. I shoot it just fine, but the straight grip on my Halfbreed feels much better to me.
Locator for me!
Strait is what I like and fits me the best. :)
Tracy
i love self serving, totally subjective threads like this .... NOT! :wavey: :dunno:
Straight or Dished. I honestly can't tell much difference between the two. I like the "feel" of the straight better than the dished but I shoot both practically the same.
Dished or Straight, either one is fine with me.
Definition of Majority: 1.greater number of people or things: most of the people or things in a large group
That said, I'm not with the "majority" on this one; I like the locator because I need all the help I can get with consistency!
I like a dished grip, but also shoot a straight grip well.
I only voted so I could see the results. It doesn't really seem to matter much to me.
RonP
I've had and shot all three Hill grips offered. Moved from the locator, to the dished, to the straight in that order. Once you get use to shooting the straight grip its hard to go back.
straight grip wedge type sized for your hand so thumb overlaps index by 1/4 inch to 1 /2 very repeatable for me anyway done by nate steen
Contrary to some current teachings and suggested approaches, a firm and controlled type of grip ('get ahold of it', said HH) works fine and dandy on Hill-style bows.
The overall shape of Hill-style bow grips seems more connected to aesthetics than to shootability since the actual shape differences are minimal. I do like the looks of the straight and dished grips, though.
