Ryan and I thought we would do a kinda hunt along thread :)
This hunt has been in the works for a longtime and both of us have been looking forward to it texting and talking for several years.
I picked up Ryan at the airport at 1:00pm and they airline had lost his luggage :knothead: We headed home and I found some camo for Ryan to wear, We shot are bows a few times and off to the woods we went.
Are first sit was in one of my favorite spots.
Several deer had been working through this spot on the way to a pond and the fields farther down the valley.
On the way to the stand we walked by probably a dozen scrapes. I had put out a new trail cam on a very large scrape the day before and we had 5 bucks on the card.
I will let Ryan tell his part of the story and we will be adding plenty of picks as we go.
Tracy
This should be a good one..!.. :campfire:
Sure enjoyed the texts today...you had me on edge all morning!
Looking forward to seeing the pix and video evidence of what you told me about :archer2:
This is Ryan, on Tracy's handle.
First I can't say enough about Tracy and Marla's generosity. This is a dream to hunt whitetails in the midwest, And my good freind is making it happen. I hope to pay him back real soon.
So as tracy said, we got on the stand Tues afternoon after the debacle at the airport. Imagine if you will me, 6 ft 2 and Tracy not. Well it worked and it was great to have the back up.
Now this is about as different of hunting as I've ever done. I am used to putting lots of miles on my boots and seeing little game. We walked not miles and climbed into the treestand to wait. Tracy had told me the turkys came through at 6 and the deer later. One of the things I was looking forward to the most was that I could shoot a doe or buck, or a turkey. Man what a smorgasboard of things that I could shoot at :)
So around 5:45 we start to hear turkey talk. I turn to ask Tracy if I should get ready and a hen flys down right in front of us. She putts around and heads back to the flock taking them away from us. Well 30 minnutes later we hear a deer blow. We waited for the rest of the afternoon with no more sightings. The wind was real squirrely and that was the cause for no sightings.
Curt I destroyed the evidence :)
So this morning we headed up to a new stand that I absolutley love! It is in the woods and in a great location. The weather was pretty decent and wind was a little better. We climbed in and Tracy did a light rattling sequence, with no results.
About a half hour later, we heard a lot of noise from down the hill. I got my longbow ready just in case. Suddenly a small heard of 6 does and yearlings came running up the ridge below the stand. They were on a trail that would take them 18-20 yards from the stand. I readied for the shot, and Tracy tried to grunt them to slow down. The final doe slowed to a slow start and I let loose. Only to watch my arrow fall short of it's intended target. Dang It!!! :banghead:
I can't wait to hear the rest of the story. I too was used to western hunting. Now I can't get enough of whitetail hunting.
After a quick laugh. I knocked another arrow and proceeded to wait, but not for long.
Another doe came up the same trail, but a lot slower. She did the turn one way, then go the other, then meander another way. She took FOREVER to close the 30 yards or so to get into range.
She finally gets into range, but on edge. Tracy whispers "aim low" I draw and shoot. A loud bang comes from the shot and the arrow sails wide right. Strike 2!!
Now the true measure of a great guide (freind) was shown to me this day. Tracy gets down and retrieves my arrows for me! LOL!!
He then found a file and touched them up for me. Man you can't pay for this kind of service :)
Well I will finish up tom after the morning hunt. There is still more to come from this morning though. Tracy might add some commentary on this morning though. See you tom :)
Looks like You nailed the timing perfect Ryan. Saw 2 bucks with does today.
This cold front and rain should put them in overdrive for the next couple of days.
bretto
started out Good.
Now for the finish  :campfire:
We will catch up tomorrow after the morning hunt. Tonight was a bust with heavy rains and wind because of a big storm front coming in. Possible snow tonight so stay tuned.
Heres a couple more critters to talk about from this mornings hunt.

Drop the string on a bruiser Ryan!

Good luck Ryan ... :campfire:
Go get 'em boys!
Man, Tracy is spoiling you Ryan! Looks like great hunting grounds...it'll happen! One of your footed shafts is going to do the job soon.

Loving every word!
Very happy for you Ryan to get to fulfill a dream. Hats off to Tracy for he kindess!

Waiting for round two, go get em' guys..!
All these reports from Kansas are really getting me fired up! I'm leaving the 11th for a week of hunting with my nephew.
Good luck guys.......
:campfire: :coffee: Thanks for taking us along!!!
Good luck guys.
I have been seeing alot more buck movement the last few days.
This weather should get them moving good.
James
Good luck and have fun!
Should be good today. It's clear and cool with a north wind...
This is pretty cool! keep it up definitely following along here
This is going to be one of the good ones ... looking forward to the next update fellas!!!
Alrighty back from the morning. So I had just missed 2 does.
After a good laugh, Tracy told me how he'd watched bucks bed around this stand. No sooner that I catch a deer headed to us and he beds 30yds from us. I tell you what, you know you have a good guide when he can call the shots :)
Unfortunatley he wasn't big enough.
We could hear animals moving below the bench. Then a cluck and a yelp. Turkeys!
I reach up for my bow, and get ready just in case. All of a sudden the turkeys took flight up into the trees. Predator! Tracy says bobcat, no wait coyote.
I get ready just like 2 times before.
And just like 2 times before, I miss. I am putting on a shooting display I tell you :knothead:
Good thing I don't get mad :)
More later or tommorow. We have several TG members coming over tonight so no update tonight. Thanks for following along.
Good luck fellas...a little mojo on the way from a busted up bowhunter :campfire:
I will say Ryan's lower limb hit his tree stand seat on the second doe and threw his arrow wide of it's target.
Now the Coyote thats a different story! :bigsmyl:
We had another great morning and split up this time in two different stands. Both had grunting bucks and does and I had a bunch of turkeys over by me.
Getting ready to head back out but will try and get some more picks loaded and on here.
Thanks everybody for following along we are having a great time.
Tracy

The suspense is building, too warm lately.
After all the immoral support we gave you last night I knew you'd come thru! Let's here the story!
Good job Ryan! More pics please! :bigsmyl:
Damn Ryan, it ain't right to post a bloody arrow picture, a smile, and then leave. Anyway, be careful, that whitetail hunting can get in your system, and there ain't no cure for it but to keep goin'!

Well, We have one more morning to get Ryan a buck before he has to head back to Utah. :(
This was also a meat hunt so Ryan could take some good grain fed whitetail back to Utah so we decided to fill a couple tags today.
First thing this morning Ryan filled the first tag after seeing a dozen does in the first hour of hunting. I saw 10 were I was at also and it was a busy morning.
Then I filled another tonight, We were sitting in a blind this time and Ryan got it all on video.
Both were quick kills and went down in sight!
Tracy
Good job guys! I filled my Buck tag today on one I just couldn't let walk. Time to work on the does.
:clapper: Good luck tomorrow!!!
Were getting some great picks of some good bucks and there doing some grunting, working scrapes and rubing but we haven't seen any chasing yet.

Way to put meat on the table!
Nice !!
Congrats!!!!
Thanks for sharing. Just awesome. My KS trip starts in 2 weeks.
All those "targets of opportunity" and then tree standing hunting adds another perspective to it and to the shot.
Sounds like the best of times... Hope there is more to share with us!
Sorry to get so behind on this thread it's been a busy couple of days dragging deer, butchering and tracking. :D
I want to thank everyone for following along and the rut information. Ryan is one heck of a good guy but you guys no that and we had a blast on this hunt. The only thing that would have made it any better is if Charlie Lamb could have made it over in time to meet Ryan.
He will be coming over this week so the hunting is not done and I barely missed a buck crossing the road on the way home from the airport and a doe by my house tonight so ther moving pretty good still.
The area I hunt is not what most people think of as typical Kansas scenery.
We have some nice rolling hills and alot of Harwood ridges with crops in the lowlands.
Once the leaves start falling off the views are awsome I think.
Tracy
We saw deer and turkeys everyday and I was very happy for that. There wasen't a single morning that the turkeys did't let us know they were around cackling, yelping and even gobbling a few times.
I have a bunch of logging roads cut so it's easy access in and out to some of the stands.
Tracy
The second morning Ryan and I split up so we could see what was going on in two diiferent spots but not to far apart. The wind was howling so we set on opposite ridges across the valley from each other were the wind was better but swirling some.
As soon as it was starting to get light I saw two dark figures walk in and started feeding on acorns in front of me. Not long after I could here grunting coming from the direction of a pond behind me. He stayed steady grunting and was getting closer so I stood a grabbed my bow preparing for the shot if needed. I could see by then and it was a small 8pt so I put the bow up and grabbed the camera.
As soon as he came around the last tree he started stiff legging and stomping and heading for the two does.
The big doe finaly got tired of him and headed off in Ryans direction the buck close behind grunting all the way and then the little doe.
This whole time the turkeys were yelping nonstop up the ridge and finaly I heard them start flying down. Soon after I could hear foot steps in the oak leaves and this guy comes walking by.
Tracy
Tracy and Ryan,
Sorry I didn't get over to see you guys. I was working over at the in-laws on Saturday. I didn't get free until after 4 so I couldn't meet you guys at the airport.
It looks like Ryan had a great time! Way to whack those does.
Thanks for all the great pics.
Chris
Sorry we missed you too Chris but we just figured you were out hunting. Next time buddy!
Quick story of the button buck I shot. After Ryan shot his doe and dragging it out and butchering it we both were to tired to clean up and just went and climbed into one of my favorite blinds.
Its in a pretty little clearing we keep mowed and its a staging area for the deer before heading on down into the crop fields. It is loaded up with scrapes and rubs every year.
We just get comfy and settled in.
And this guy shows up!
For some reason he dosen't like something and while Ryan was preparing for the shot he runs over and goes into the timber. :dunno:
Tracy
Sounds like a great time, and some prime meat for the freezer! Things are just picking up from the sounds of it - keep it coming
Maybe 15 minutes after the gobbler runs off we look up and here comes a deer from the south.
It's a young button buck and will be perfect for Ryan's meat collection :D A adult doe was soon following him and another big doe just coming out of the timber.
He moves off to the right side of the blind and I have to shift my position to another window. While stepping back I step right on Ryans sunflower seed bag. CRUNCH!! Everybody freezes.
He finaly settles down a little and I have to wait for one of the big does to move out of the way. I pick a spot and release, The arrow sails right over his back and Ryan says you hit the blind with your bow tip. I heard it but the shot wasen't to far off he was just super fast.
We are sitting there wispering and Ryan is giving me a hard time about missing and for some reason he comes back and offers me a quatering away shot. I wait for Ryan to say he is filming, drop down on one knee pick a spot and release and this time there was no ducking out of the way.
Tracy
The shot looks great and he only makes it about 40yds then crashes into a ceder tree and drops right there in sight.
A few more deer start coming into the clearing right after the buck drops and start blowing. We decide to just go grab him and pull him down the hill and take a few picks and not spook them to much. My trail cam caught us walking by.
Before leaving I go over and retrieve my first arrow which is stuck in a log and Ryan gets a good chuckle out of that.
Then a few picks and off to the house to cut and wrap again. It has been a great day and were all smiles when we get back home.
Tracy
Great job and great pictures....Thanks!
Awesome hunt guy's

Love the play by play!
Well guys I'm back :( But I am with my family again :)
I already miss the early mornings in the treestand, the turkey talk, the deer, and the great company.
First off let me say that Tracy is as good as they come! He went above and beyond, as only great friends do. This was by far one of the most enjoyable and fun hunts I have ever been on.
I will be along later today with pics and stories of my own. I miss that area of the country already. It was so neat to see and I met some great Tradgangers as well.
Again I can't thank my bud Tracy enough for the invite and all the opportunities... and there were plenty of them.
Thanks for following along and I will be back soon.
Oh and Charlie, I think you are going to hit it just right this week
