Title: Hiking for blacktails.
Post by: Thumper Dunker on October 28, 2011, 04:48:00 AM
Was up in the sierras yesterday maybe 7000-8000ft. only saw six does. But one was called in while trying to get a coyote or bobcat. Called up a creek canyon And she started hopping down the moutain side maybe 600 yards out making sure every thing could see her. got to maybe 10 to 15 yards from me circling me huffing ,puffing and lots of stomping . Think she was a little upset. She was a big old gal. My buddy that was with me had eyes as big as pie pans. He has never seen any thing called in before. Missed a couple of squirrels. Still to warm.Im finished deer hunting this year, time to start having fun.

your call was probably very close to a fawn in distress noise. We've had some fun with that in eastern Oregon.

Don't you guys have a late season shot at blacktail?

Was doing my deer getting rip to shreds call . Will chase any deer out of the area or bring them in real fast. But seems that bucks only show when its not deer season  :banghead:  .Im sure it scares more deer than it calls.

I have a buddy who has called in numerous big blacktail bucks using fawn in distress calls. He uses an old Weems Wild Call.

During the rut you can get doe's to come right in, and they usually have a buck in tow when they arrive.

Last December a friend and I were setup calling lions using a FoxPro electronic caller. When he ran the fawn in distress call, 5 doe's and fawns came running in, followed closely by a mature 4x4 buck. The dominant doe walked to within a couple feet of the speaker with her ear back and hair on end, ready to kick the snot out of something.

Can't shoot does ,forked horn or better and eye guards do not cont. Seasons ends sunday. There are a couple of late hunts but very few tags and hard to get.Deer come in all trhe time while calling preds. But with me the bucks are never during deer season.
