I am a big fan of John McDonald's Big River bows. I have had a bunch of different models and none have been anything less than great shooters.
Recently I had a chance to trade a longbow that didn't suit me for this most recent model in the Big River lineup. I don't know much about it but guess that it takes its design at least in part from a Black Widow.

It's a good stable shooter and reasonably quiet. I am going to hunt it the rest of this year and hopefully kill a doe or two.
Nice looking bow. Like the red accent stripes all around. Might mix well w/dark riser woods too.
Classic lines....reminds me of an old Ben Pearson or Browning.....I think it was an Explorer ?? Nice looking bow, what are the specs on that recurve? I have shot a couple of Big River longbows and was very impressed!
60", 53# @ 28"
Nice Bow,I like it.
I am never let down with any of Johns bows. His work never ceases to amaze me.
He had one similar to that design last I visited his shop.
That one is beautiful and no different than the beauty and quality of Johns work.
Hope you like it. I do. :readit:
Nice bow :)
Do they hsve a wresite?
Msrgly
John does not have a website or even a computer.
If you need contact info PM me, I will get you a phone #. He lives in Central time zone (just a hint) in case you wind up calling him at 2 am.
OH, his widow replicas are sweet, so so sweet. What a shooter. That is a very nice one, congrats.
It is a nice bow but from a looks and shooting standpoint I prefer his 59's Kodiak style recurve. I sold the one I had to a fellow in OK and have regretted it ever since.

Nice bow I like the red accent in the riser.
I have one of Johns 69 Super kodial Replicas,62",54#@28",Black Phonolic Riser with Cocobolo caps and Boo cores.that thing is an absolute rocket.outstanding in every aspect.
Jay, he will make another one of those for you:)
Nice bow, I love mine. I think they have the best grip of all his bows.
 I like it!
Great bow!! I own two of John's, in this design , and I killed three turkeys and a moose this year with them! I love the grip as well.

I have one of Johns bows in my hand right now and I'm headin to the woods as soon as I finish typing this. NICE BOW JCJ
Me too...heading out right now.
After shooting this bow a little more, and really getting it fine tuned in terms of brace height and proper arrow, I can say this is a REALLY fine shooting bow. The grip and throat size as well as overall balance of the bow are outstanding.
I have already filled my buck tag for the season and tonight with this bow in hand I had an encounter with a real dandy. So besides being a great shooter, maybe it brings me a little luck!
Thats a beauty!!!!!!!!
Any idea what the wood is on that Bow??
Looks good.
Joe, That bow was just sold on the classifieds. Price was great on it also.

Joe:
I ended up selling it back to the original owner. It was/is a very nice bow. Maybe a little short for my 32" draw but not bad.
Frankly, the original owner was the only person to express and interest in purchasing the bow.
I guess John just isn't a bowyer that is in vogue enough to generate much interest in his work.
I think I still like John's 59 Kodiak copy the best of any of his recurves.
I like his longbows best of all!
Jay
Jay, I would have bought he bow if I didn't have a wall full of them and had money.
I love his long bow as well but have yet to try a 59 replica.
Joe, that's what you get for going hunting. :readit:
