just got in from the ball game to find my new woodsman elites that are suppose to be hunting sharp right out of the pack. seems i got old pack. saids right on the pack that they have to be sharpened. kinda sux for tomorrows hunt.
Looks like you will be up late working the stone and oil.... could be worse..... No BH's at all...
Good luck tomorrow
I experienced the same thing when I got my Woodsman Elites last month.
They are really easy to sharpen. Put them on a stone and you'll be ready to go
I just got mine in last week and they were in fact shaving sharp. It's not hard a steel, though, and pretty easy to sharpen. I polished mine anyway on an ultra-fine ceramic stone.
We (KME Sharpeners) started sharpening all the Woodsman Elites late last year for 3 Rivers and we shave test every blade before sending them out. Because they're carbon steel we oil them up before packaging but when the oil drys it can kind of "encase" the sharp edge. All that should be needed to bring them right back to shaving is a quick stropping on a piece of plain brown corrugated cardboard. (like a good sized flap off a cardboard box). Just pull the heads backwards along the cardboard about 15 passes per side to remove the oil residue and expose the sharp edges. The blister card still says to sharpen them because the packaging hasn't been updated yet. Hope this helps and I'd apreciate it if everyone could help get this info out there. Thanks,
Ron

Ron

I would like to know too. I shoot woodsman and was wanting to get a KME but I didn't think you had a system to sharpen woodsman. Could you help me out?
I have a KME broadhead and a knife sharpener and to my knowledge (which is limited) I don't think the KME is needed to sharpen them. I am pretty sure Ron is simply using flat stones and cardboard but I may be off base here.
Well I just got a pack and they are not shaving sharp. The edges were not evenly ground particularly at the tail of the blade. Several blades have waves in the bevel. A couple blades were not even beveled all the way to the tail of the head. It took a good bit of metal removal to get a consistent bur on all edges. Now they are sharp. Good thing I got as set of Ron's aluminum oxide stones with my order. That along with Ron's instructions got it done. No way Ron worked on these heads.
Todd,
What weight/style did you get? I'm not sure how many packs 3 Rivers keeps in stock. We've done a whole lot of heads in the last year or so but it could be you got some "pre-KME" heads. I gotta say, doesn't sound like anything we sharpened. Even though these are 3 Rivers heads we take great care in making sure that every blade is up to our standards before they go out. Thanks,
Ron
175 gr. screw in heads.
sounds like mine. they were the 200 gr. screw-in. the were not flat or sharp. marked the blade with a sharpy and had to use a file a good bit to get ful contact. only differance in these and the ones that i bought serveral years ago is that it seems that the steel is a lot harder. doesn't seem like anythink that you guys at KME have looked at. have heard nothing but good thinks about KME. thats why i bought them.
Ron, I'll bet by now you're running out of hair on your forearms. :bigsmyl:
So is 3 rivers selling old stock? They quote this
Now, Hunting Sharp right out of the pack! Every Woodsman® Elite Broadhead is given a hunting sharp grind by KME Sharpeners before they're packaged!
Ron isnt making the heads but simply sharpening them, that being said I'm sure there are still some heads out there that where packaged before KME started sharpening them. I know Ron has spent countless hours coaching people over the phone on sharpening both knives and broadheads, for sure one of the most selfless men I have ever met. If Ron got me to get things sharp he is truley the man! Keep up the good work Ron, you got a great thing goin.

I'd call them about it and send them back if that's the case. 3Rivers has excellent customer service am sure they would make it right.
I haven't bought any yet. I would rather have the KME sharped heads, so I would know the bevels would be good and flat.
When I started reading this thread I thought "No Way" do we have old stock unless it is the "out there" weights. When 175gr and 200gr were listed I check the shelf just to make sure I was right.
Long behold, I found just a few 3-packs that were non-KME sharpened. Not many, and must have been mixed in the stock some how a while ago.
If you look at the back of the package, up by the pop out used to hang packs (the rounded corner triangle) can you tell me if it has any numbers stamped? If not, they are pre-KME. If they have numbers stamped, then they are KME sharpened.

mine has no numbers on the back of the back by the triangle that you use to hang it. it appears that mine were not sharpen by KME but i already knew that when i open the pack.
Why don 't you just learn how to sharpen the bh's yourself?
Lets say you got "pre-sharpened" heads, what were you going to do when you dulled one up and needed to re-sharpen??
 :dunno:
i do know how to sharpen them. i killed a doe with one tonight. i am resharpening right now. i am not mad at 3 rivers or anyone . was just disappointed when they were not close to being shaving sharp out of the pack as advertised. seems i'm not the only one. may they can removed the old ones from stock and problem solved.
benji
The pre sharpend heads would just be easier to work with. Before you would have to make alot of passes on a file just to get the bevels flat.
