Think I may change my name to "Almost". Fits me best during deer season.....
Opening morning, distracted by a rabbit, buck walks up to me at ten yards- Busted!
Two minutes later, while cutting some thorn branches out of the way- Busted by the bucks girlfriend from behind me!
All this happened twenty yards from my house... Why do I bother going outside?
Next morning, didn't have time to get dressed. Bow, glove, arm guard, pj's and hat (that's all)... Out the door hiding behind my propane tanks- Busted Again! Should of slept on the front porch.
Third day, action again... Did it all right. Wind, terrain, slower that slow, cover, attack from the blind side! There they were. Right there... Didn't see the one that saw me! Busted Again! Gotta love this stuff, or else why keep tryin'?
... mike ... :banghead:
I almost got to go hunting the other day. Tim
I used to have a bad habit of eating sunflower seeds in my stand while hunting when i was younger, out walks a nice 9 point and i stand to get in position for a shot when i left the sunflower seeds in my lap. I almost got a shot!
At least your seeing deer mike.......can't say that up here! Got busted by a Chipmunk today, he came right in my blind with me! :biglaugh: :dunno:
Three separate does with fawns and two more in shooting range and wind swirls. Awesome hunts just no deer to show for it. Keep at it you will connect
I shaved ones back after readjusting my hat with my bow string this morning. Always feels like the last deer you will ever see. Deer season is always a roller coaster ride. :D

This stalking and/or still hunting is tough but it makes me tick! No tree stands, store bought blinds, game calls or trail cameras for me... Maybe that's why I ain't got a deer since I've been hunting with trad gear... I'll get back up there in a couple weeks and try again.
... mike ...
PS... Bet that buck knows how to read! Thanks Killy.
A picture is worth a thousand *#%@*%&!!! :D
Yeah at least you're seeing deer!!! All I've seen are hogs and javalina,,,,and the occasional illegal alien!!!
I've had too many this year to list!
Seeing them is half the battle. Every instance is part of the learning curve. Keep at 'em, sounds like you are getting closer all the time.
Good luck to you.
Hang in there Bro'.............one of them has your name on it!
These posts are to short to tell you my storys.I could write about 4 novels over the years of the ones that have got away. Its what makes it so interesting.now its just great to be out there, nevermind the outcome.
Its your year Mikey almost.
You have to quit trying so hard, eventually the deer will become tame and walk into your cabin. Then its into the skillet ;) ;) :D
Killdeer..........
How do the deer always keep their vitals covered by limbs, trees & bushes. It's always like that for me.
Keep at it Bud sooner or later it will happen.
Gonna give it another try in Westchester with Jamie and Greg on Monday and/or Tuesday this week... Maybe one of those "tame deer" will give me a broadside at ten yards...
... mike ...
There isn't a shortage of deer there :bigsmyl:
I bought a nice pair of binos. from one of the guys here on trad, couldn't wait to use them in the woods. Last week I walked in on a dirt trail and played the wind, I get in about 120yds. and I'm doing more glassing than moving, I spot a bruiser lying down chewing his cud, I count 5 pts' on one side but couldn't see the other. I'm a good seventy yds. away from him on an angle, so he's in the woods but I couldn't tell just how far until I get down the road more, he's facing at about my 2:30 position so he's facing the direction I am going in. I get about forty yds. further down the road without him busting me, but then I have a problem, if I keep going the woods will open up behind me so that if he is looking in my direction ( which he already is ) he will be able to silhouette me against this open spot and I get busted, or do I find a spot and hope he comes my way. Well I chose to keep going and yes I got busted, but what fun doing it. That buck was plenty mad, he just kept blowing at me for quite awhile.
Beats the heck out of sitting in a tree like I have done all these years.
Hey Mike, I have had deer come down a trail and I hid behind a tree waiting for them only to have them come on the other side of the tree not 10' from be, they sure did jump, and so did I.
Keep at it you'll only get better.
Good luck.
I had one at 15' with just a ragged cedar tree between us. If he would have taken 2 more steps to clear some limbs he would have had a Ribtek induced breathing problem. I'm thinking 2 more steps is all I need. I am on the ground on a sidehill and he is right in front of me. Just then the wind gusts and swirls my scent right back to him and he wheels and runs blowing as he goes. He was a pretty little spike buck that would have looked good in my freezer but I learn something during each encounter like how much I hate humble pie and tag soup. Ground hunting is tough!
I had this little fellow in front of me for a couple hours last night. He got a little whiff of me and backed up and then lay down in the food plot looking right at my tree but never looked up at me. I was mighty uncomfortable having to stand still for that long. Finally he looked to my left hard and I looked over and big antlers were coming out of the brush. A big 10 pt walks out and is coming right to me when he catches a little whiff of something and backs up. Since the little fellow was bedded down about 15 yrds from me, he relaxed and started feeding at 20 yrds broadside. I picked a spot and he ducked under the arrow for a clean miss. It would have been a great shot.

Missed a turkey at about 17yds last night. Shot as it was moving between two saplings. Shot just a little early and so the arrow went right in front of its breast. Probably the same turkey I missed this past spring. Disgusting...but fun!
"Almost" is my middle name, had it for wayyyy too long!
I could join you in the almost club this season Mike, this ground hunting is not easy but it sure is exciting and heck the deer look bigger than when you watch them from a tree :p
I shot a doe from a tree but I almost shot at a couple bucks but they were small, I almost shot a nice buck but the brush deflected my arrow. I almost shot a doe yesterday but my shot was low.
Can I join :knothead:
I almost drew a deer tag this year! I had my best almost year on elk,I had elk within 80 yards most days. I have almost hit ducks twice this month. The shafts and fletchings have grazed twice but not the business end yet!
Good luck on those tame deer Mike. They have been giving me fits for years!
