Title: String Silencer Positions
Post by: wv lungbuster on October 19, 2011, 06:57:00 PM
Do you guys install your silencers at the same length from each end of the string, or do you offset them?

Take length of string then divide x4 good place to start.

Yup, divide by 4 or 3 and start there.  I find it easiest and quickest to pluck the string with the silencers installed and move them around until they are the most effective.  Lots of variables, but most of the time they end up closer to the 1/3 points than 1/4 for me.

i used to use the 1/3 position most of the time ,but my Roseoak limbs like 'em closer to the tips....tinker a little

I have been putting two sets of smaller silencers placed at 1/3 and 1/4 positions.  Has worked well so far.

Slide them around and you can tell the difference. I usually start at the 1/3 point and work out to the limb tips from there. I do keep them equal.

Been using two smaller (like 1" ea) sets of wool silencers at the 1/4 and 1/6 points.  When I tried at 1/3, I picked them up too much in my peripheral vision.

1/4 and 1/6 has given me very good silencing results, and I really like the way they look, too!  By the way, mine are set up to be symmetrical...

My Kanati does too. My recurve is on the quarter points and seems to like that. Each bow will prefer something a bit different it seems.

I place mine the same lenght from the ends.

Same on both ends, for me.

Never tried an offset.

I tried mine in many different positions but finally just figured out that putting them at 10 and 14in from the ends usually ended up working about the best on most of the strings I have set up.  I use double 4in lengths of material with 2 sets on each end and that seems to work the best for me and keep the weight low on the string and minimal performance loss.

I use about 10" from the tips.  You want them at the highest points on the string between the nodes when it vibrates, but good luck identifying those without a high speed camera and bow vice.
