Title: Need input on a broken bow
Post by: Eric S on October 19, 2011, 12:09:00 AM
I have a bow that the upper limb tip cracked and flew off of during a shot. This happened two years ago and friend tried to replace it but had to cut the bow down about a half inch on both ends. It was a highly reflex/deflex 58" bow and 60 pounds at 29.5".
Well it happened again    :banghead:   and I think it would need cut down again.   :banghead:   I am thinking it is maybe junk at this point but wanted to know is there somebody who could maybe fix it and make a longer bow out of it? This would be my preference.    :D
So is it possible?
Who would you suggest?
What kind of cost am I looking at?
I think these bows are now going for around $600 so I don't want to dump a lot of money in this. How much would you be willing to spend to have it repaired? Just out of curiosity. Thanks for any and all input.

I wonder will you ever fully trust the bow again since it's happened twice?

I have another one just like it (different wood color) and have never had a problem with it so yeah I think so. The second time was due to a less than professional repair in my opinion.

Make it a wall decoration, and get you another one that won't blow up on you.  You can't trust it!!

Were you using ff string on a non ff bow by chance? Probably not but since we don't know the model or age of the bow there is not much to go on. Any pics of the damage?

Didn't want to mention the maker. I don't believe it was his fault at all. It is made to handle ff. He was suppling a dynaflight 97 string with his bows. The bow itself is maybe 4 or 5 years old at the most.

No damage. It is missing the limb tips. They were both sanded off to make another attempt at a repair. I told my friend not to worry himself with it. I probably wouldn't have even considered it but I have been staring at it everyday for a couple of weeks now and it started to fester in me that maybe I could salvage it. However I don't want or need a 56" bow.

Is it the tip or the overlays? If it has broken the whole tip off twice I wouldn't shoot it anymore. It could cost you an eye or some other injury.

If you can send pictures I'd like to see what you have.  Take close ups of the tips from the top, sides, and underneath.  Sounds to me like you are talking about the tip overlays coming off, but I don't understand why the limbs needed to be cut down?
I'm headed out hunting for the next 5 days and won't be on the computer until early next week, but I will get back to you then.

Oh, and making a longer bow out of it would not be a possibility.  Kind of like when you cut a board too short - it's hard to go back and make it longer again...  ;)
