Title: Abowyer Brown Bear broadhead
Post by: alligatordond on October 17, 2011, 08:35:00 PM
OK, I am not one to pump up a product as there are many great choices out there. Broadhead wise, I have messed around with many but always went with my trusty Zwickey Deltas. Heck, I even cut my daughter's umbilical cord with one. But I have been playing with these Abowyers lately and I am impressed. I have a practice head I shoot into an old foam target. So when I got the paper sharpening wheel from Abowyer, I of course practiced with that head and got it scary sharp. I then went out and shot 15 or so into the target and the head is STILL scary sharp!!! I am impressed to say the least. FYI, it took about 45 seconds using the paper wheel to get it from dull to shaving.

Yeah Matt,
The umbilical cord cutting is still talked about in these parts. The comments range from cool to crazy

I would be afraid to shoot anything larger than an M1A1(tank) with an Abowyer head!    They are great heads.

Although the Abowyer heads, as least the newer designs like Whitetail, Large Bone Buster, and the Brown Bear, haven't been out but only about 3 years, ....they will definitely leave a mark over the next decade.

I'll be sticking a Whitetail with a Whitetail the season.....that thing is a boarderline hatchet!!!

What is a paper wheel?

I just went to order some more Whitetails, and they are no longer offering these.

If anyone has one or some that they don't want, PLEASE contact me. Right or left Bevel ...makes no difference to me.

Thanks.

Terry , I think I have some I'll give you. Gotta check when I get home. I'll let you know.

Dave, the paper wheel is offered thru A & H Archery. It's an 8 inch wheel designed for a 6" bench grinder turning 3000 rpm or more. It is great. When I first got it I sharpened everything in the house!

I've used the large boneheads and they sharpen up well and stay sharp.

I think the Abowyer broadheads are the best thing to come along in a loong time. My son and I have used the Brown Bears on Elk and Hogs-they are impressive!

Here is a little tour of the Abowyer factory on a day they were making Brown Bears.

I am extremely impressed not only with the quality of the broadhead, but with Larry and his whole crew.  I am certain I would have not put a Snuffer thru that bear shoulder.

I shoot the Brown Bears but like the Wapitis as well. I have killed deer with both, but really like the Wapiti for its length to width ratio for deer.  I shot a 200# plus Wisconsin whitetail a little far back, entering lung exiting paunch, shot.  I let him sit overnight in -15 degree temps.  Turns out this was likely unnecessary, as I believe he expired within the first hour of the shot. I found him dead in his only bed, 80 yards from my stand with an abundant blood trail the entire length of the track.  A good outcome for a "not-so-good" shot placement.

Yes, they are scary sharp, I also use a paper wheel to hone mine.  Great heads, yes indeed!

Kris

Sorry Terry, no Abowyer whitetails. I think they're boneheads. They were given to me a year or so ago.

I noticed the whitetail is no longer offered also. Too bad cause I really liked that head. I got like two left.

They quit making a few of their heads. I was lucky enough to catch the last 6 sets of the Javelina's that I shoot on clearance.

Super fine heads for sure.

A buddy came over to see the sharpening process so I dulled a Brown Bear, turned on the bench grinder/paper wheel and had him time me. Dull to super scary sharp... 22 seconds! I'm like a kid with a new toy.

Havent tried stainless yet. Carbon meets all expectations. Rust hasnt been an issue and I live in coastal Florida. I cant imagine stainless being better on sharpness or durability. But I'm interested to hear from anyone with experience w/ stainless.

Looks like the only Screw in they carry is the Brown Bear (200+). I've been using the Bonehead 145 glue-ons for a couple years now (both, on woodies, and last year, on carbons, with a screw in adaptor, to bring them up close to 175). So I guess I'm still alright. Of course I still have my original six left. I've loved them but, because I haven't had the chance to shoot any critters with them, I can't add much "personal experience" info on performance. I do have every faith in them though, under the circumstances, because of friend batman's successes with the Brown Bears he uses, and other reports.

Did shoot an elk in 09 with one. 54 lb Silvertip, and cedar shaft weighing about 525. The elk fell inside of 80 yards. Cant comment on the blood trail as we walked right up to it at night

The Brown Bear is what I shoot. I can't sharpen to save my life, then I got the paper wheel. Man even I can make these braodheads scary sharp. I even cut myself the first time I went to shave some hair off my arm as a test!
