Title: strike one!!!!!
Post by: huntmaster80 on October 11, 2011, 08:33:00 AM
Well this is my first year, which is no excuse, because I practiced a lot!!  I had 4 doe come basically before dark and I could hear a buck grunting in the muitifloral rose.  So about 5 minutes go by and a 8 point and his twin brother both about 90" bucks or so appear, but headed straight into an apple orchard and dissapeared     :(

I look to my left and a nice big doe is locked onto me. After the Texas standoff she turned and gave me a perfect broadside shot. I drew my bow and released.   What I forgot to do was pick a spot    :knothead:   .  My lumi nock  looked great until it hit about a 4 inch tree just in front of the doe.

STRIKE ONE!!!!  Even though I missed it was a great morning.  I will be back after em again this afternoon. With high hopes and about another 20 practice shots from a stand.

Those "wooden" deer traveling with the regular deer are tough.    ;)

Getting caught up in the moment and forgetting to pick a spot is very easy to do at first.

keep at it and talk yourself through the next shot.

Good Luck.

Huntmaster- unfortunately I am somewhat comforted to hear someone else is in the same boat. Don't feel bad I am up to strike two!  Who knew that a Zwickey also works well for pruning saplings?  Before that I missed a 13yd chip shot over the back.  My confidence is somewhat low right know.

I had 9 strikes before I scored. Never picked a spot until #10! Generally if you shoot over a deers back it is because you looked at the deer and did not pick the "spot" where the arrow will go.

Think it was 5 or 6 strikes for me before my first.I mean, real chip shots, 4 or 5 yards and I was missing way bad, to the right of left. I finally figured out that I was watching the deer's head as I drew, trying to not get busted and at the last second I was trying to come back to the chest but my arrows would always fly at chest level, but under thier heads.
After I figured that out I killed 3 or 4 in a row!

Keep after 'em. You're obviously doing a lot right to be seeing animals. The rest will fall into place. Good luck!

My friends make fun of me because I can zero in on small things, and usually hit them, but I'll miss things that are much bigger.  You'll get it eventually!

If i had a dollar for every time ive missed...wellll i would have no money or nothin but, haha jk man iv missed WAY more than my share!

Don't feel bad I missed a big doe at 10 ft (first time in a ground blid , she suprized me she was so close) I forgot to pick a spot and up right over her back spent the next day hunting for the arrow so my friends tracyor wouldn't get a flat

Shot over a doe last year at 8 yards with a selfbow and stone head. Couldn't have had a better opportunity. I was so excited that I was getting ready to tag my first primitive kill and I didn't pick a deer let alone a spot.

Keep after it, You'll score.

I'm in the same boat.

I saw three Saturday.  Thought I was gonna stock the freezer...

Thought too soon.

I clean shot under her!

Hopefully I'll be more prepared for the next encounter!

last shot with my selfbow I shot over a 6-pointers back at about 20 feet, but I honestly think it was these barrel tapered silver wood  arrows i was using that always hit high on the 1st couple shots until I adjusted,,, should of known better for hunting and the 1st shot being high!

last shot with a longbow which was years ago I called in a 9-pointer running in to 4 feet away from my tree,, I could not believe how well they pin point sound it was just awesome!!!!! but I waited till it got about 8 feet away and shot straight down with a morrison dakota which I thought was a loud bow to begin with,,,, anyway I picked a spot about 2" under the arm pit figuring the deer would drop into the arrow.

well I shot and put the arrow about an inch under his arm pit because he never dropped! and then when the arrow hit the ground the buck snapped it with its hoof..... so i sold the bow on here that evening and hunted with mostly recurves and selfbows since,,,, Gawd I hated that bow ha ha ha..
