Title: TX hunters check in.......
Post by: highpoint forge on October 07, 2011, 02:47:00 PM
Hunted a few days this week and heading back out to East TX for the weekend. Trying for a deer and any unlucky hogs....obviously really dry and my host has not filled their feeders yet, so it's kinda ambush tactics and spot and stalk in the thick stuff right now. The deer are still coming to their old food plots in the AM, I've noticed, and I might just set up on the trails to/from there. Seeing lots of deer and some midday. I think the stress of the summer is hurting us. I'll hunt close to the creeks in the riverbottom area.

Anyone here in TX out now or have news from this week? I'd like to hear what everyone is seeing?

I hunt near Goliad, TX and opening weekend I saw lots of hogs (shot two), some does and no bucks were seen.  Still early though and the bucks should start making more appearances during the last week of archery season.  At least that's the usual schedule on our place.

Good luck.

I've been feeding the deer in my front yard. The high summer temperatures this year and no rain since last September of 2010 has put a hurt on the deer where I live and hunt.

The deer coming to the front yard of my house, both bucks and does, their ribs are showing. I guess I'm getting soft in my old age and I've decided to not hunt deer this year. I'm going to hunt small feral hogs instead.

Besides, the 13" antler inside spread rule is in effect and I haven't seen a buck with a spread wider than 12" this year.

I hunt in the Hill Country, going back down tomorrow.  We've been seeing does in one area during the morning, and then a separate, more heavily wooded area about 500 yards away is where the bucks like to show up in the evenings -- there's action at these two feeders only at those times, never both.  Occasionally, you get some does mixed in with the bucks and vice versa.

Opening weekend, we found they were doing 2 things -- first, they were moving around later in the mornings than usual (we've been scouting this place all year with cameras and also just sitting and watching their pathing from hillsides and blinds), and second, they were moving around a lot just after midday rather than their usual pattern of just before dark.  We adjusted for this on Sunday and my brother-in-law was able to take a shot on a 9-point around 2:30pm (we never, ever saw them out-and-about around this time prior to this), but it was a bad shot.   :(

We'll see what happens this weekend.  Good hunting and be safe.

I hunted the Sam Houston National Forest last weekend and its dry as heck. I do alot of spot and stalk out there but its sounds like I'm crushing a bag of potato chips every time my feet hit the ground. I'll be back after it tomorrow. I had a doe within 25 yards last weekend (she didnt give me a good shot) but she looked pretty healthy. Sam Houston is on a lake though so they are getting water. I may hit Amistad once rifle season starts since its bow only. No lease for me again this year, its been hard to find a good lease.

Good luck too you

4 does and a little one at 60 yds. Crossing in front of me in a clearing. There's an armadillo beneath the stand and it sounds like a frigging elephant rolling in the underbrush!!!

I saw acorns on the road when I stalked in.

I hunted my place opening mourning,it buts up to the Sam Houston National Forest.Only hunted 30 minutes, shot a doe right off the bat.I was surprised how good a shape she was in and she even had some fat on her.
My lease is in Coldspring, been feeding heavy there with feeders and hand feeding.Cameras showing a lot of hogs, some does and a few bucks. The deer are looking poor there with ribs showing. There is water in the creeks so that helps. Will hunt there this weekend.

Good luck y'all.

Opening morn last Sat, I hunted deep woods SHNF. Unknown, it was near the Lone Star Trail where I saw 15 hikers total (numerous groups) walking through making all kinds of noise. On purpose? Been 4 days before sunup to after sundown & haven't seen a thing. Hunted over a wet creek tonight until dark & noticed the moon. Public land deer feed after dark on bright moons. Found 1 oak w/very small acorns, 1 small rub, 2 scrapes, & I'm in the deep woods a lot.

I hunt in Gonzales county near Nixon.  Plenty dry there. Hogs are still around quite a bit.  I have not yet seen any legal bucks except for those on trail cam pics.

I'll be back after them this weekend hunting out of a new tree stand.  We'll see how it goes.

Maybe we should get together after bowhunting season is over. It would be nice to meet fellow TG'ers that live close (relatively speaking).

Getting together sounds great! Sent a few PM's. Think you boys would do good to give the moon a rest. Man I'm bummed at no deer. Might give chance for rain too. Cloudy today but you couldn't get rain here if clouds had it. Think we're on a 100 year sun cycle. Might ask Al Gore to do a rain dance if this isn't his weekend saving whales.

I don't see how mosquitos survive a drought. You would think there would be none.

Mosquitos eggs can lay dorment for aong time and they only need a coke bottle top of water to hatch and grow.  So them skeeters are drought tollerant for sure.  Just lying in wait for a little moisture.

I'm glad to see lots of rain today.     :D    And we've got a lot more coming.

BTW, I do a lot of saltwater kayak fishing. If you think the mosquitoes are bad in the woods, saltwater mosquitoes are twice as large and when they stab you, you definitely notice it!

This good rain system should green up any vegetation for the deer and might even get the hogs on the move.

Howdy Fellas, I live Close to Hughes Springs, Tx. Me and a friend are in the process of making the switch to Trad only. I have been bowhunting since I was very young and used a compound with no sights up until age 16 then went the compound with all the bells route. I have found with age that traditional is much more challenging and fun. I have a lot to learn and so far it has been great. Just wanted to say hi and let ya know where i'm hunting this season. I bagged a cow elk last month in a diy hunt in colorado but that was before I made the switch. good luck this season and God Bless.

I just got home from 4 days at my lease near Tilden. I shot a big fat doe. She was in great shape and weighed 109lbs. I saw quite a few does and fawns for our place but the bucks were not so good. I saw 6 bucks - 2 spikes, 2 four pointers, and 2 six pointers. NONE of the fours or sixes had any brow tines. I hope this was a fluke and I see more and better bucks as the season plays out. Bodywise though, our deer seem to be in prety good shape.

I went to my place near Leakey in the Hill Country to fill feeders opening weekend but didn't hunt because there was to much work to finish up. We filled a feeder that is 400yrds from the deck at 4:30PM on Saturday afternoon and went back to the house. At 4:45 the feeder went off and 10 minutes later we had two 3yr old 8 points and 5 doe at the feeder. I has working on the feeder and setting up a trailcam for at least 2 hours and the deer still came in. Just goes to show you how hungry they are.

I hunted the Aransas Wildlife Refuge last week.  I saw 2 does, and a small herd of hogs.  Never got a shot at the deer, but the hogs gave me an opportunity at a 35yds. in the dark.  All I got was some hair:(  There were some lucky guys though.  I think the biggest was a 10 pointer at 40 yds.  He was shooting a "Wheeled Devil" though.....Gonna go out to the ranch down here in Laredo this week, much better luck there....  I did manage to get a ram on another ranch out in Webb County opening weekend...It's posted on here.

Hunted north of Florence this morning. 50 degrees as the moonlight was overpowered by the rising sun.  At 7:15 two does came from my 7 o'clock position.  The older doe was showing the effects of the drought....pretty guant.  The younger one looked to have more meat on her so I decided to take her if they'd just quit boring holes through me as they fed.  When I felt it safe to draw I raised my bow the last 3 inches and I swear it took me 3 minutes to draw to anchor as they were at 11 yards and I was in a 6' tripod backed into some cedars.  At release the string caught on those little rubber dots on one of the fingers of my glove that I was wearing under my tab....the shot went high/back.

After 1/2 an hour went to get my buddy and drove to town to have some coffee before trailing her.  When we got back we couldn't find any blood, but I saw the trail they took out on.  After 40 yards I found my arrow....small amount of blood, lots of meat.  Shot her right through the tenderloin.  We couldn't find any blood on the ground after a large grid search so we tracked their running hoof prints for over 1/2 mile before losing them.

I know this one's going to make it, but it doesn't take the sight of a bad shot out of your head.  First thing I did when I got home was cut those 3 fingers out of that glove.

Rob -
Know how you feel about getting off a bad shot. Takes awhile to get the taste out of your mouth and the memory out of your head.

I spent my first weekend hunting in SE Oklahoma. Lots of public land there. Some pressure but usually never see another hunter except in the designated camp area. Sat the first afternoon and evening near the only water hole within a mile. There were lots of tracks, deer, turkey and hogs. Not one was thirsty before dark. Rained pitch forks that night and most of the morning. Managed to get in and set up  one of what I call a throw away ladder stand. If someone needs it more than I, they are welcome to it. It's located about 15 yards on the south side of a well used east west game trail. It also sits 10 yards from a well rooted out mud hole and bedding area. Only problem now is I'll have to wait a couple weeks before I can get back and see what comes by.

The deer movement was pretty slow, though. The bucks I saw looked like the drought has had some effect on the antler growth.

I hunt west of Alto. Opening weekend, Sat. evening had two 8 points and a yearling come in. The 8 point that was big enough to be legal stayed behind a cedar tree forever. I got my bow ready, when he stepped out he looked around, figured something wasn't right, turned around and walked off into the woods, the other two followed him. No chance for a shot. This past Sat. morning had two does show up, didn't pick a spot and shot right over the back of one. Funny how you forget the little things. Will be back after them this weekend.

I wish I was ready to hunt.  I live in NW Houston.  I have had my recurve for a couple years.  Gotta be honest, I haven't practiced enough.  Should be ready by now, but Im only consistent to 10 yards.

Anyway, good luck to all of you this season.

Skunked tonight but hunted a big ol ravine system behind a very productive feeder. Many Mosquitos and nothing moving at 80F. The squirrels barely showed up at dark!

Saw a NICE 10 pointer with a doe, from the truck this PM. I left the brush blind early as the feeder was inexplicably empty. Just watched him walk away. Tall rack with heavy dark antlers and the main beams were close to touching. Just outside the ears. I'd guess a  3 year old.  He had good body mass too.

The acorns are on the ground fellas...

Went to my lease in Aspermont opening weekend and found both my feeders out of commission. #1 battery out of juice. My son-in-law had mounted the solar panel under the feeder instead of on the side. new battery and remounted solar panel. second feeder destroyed by cows. Had to buy new feeder and rework fence. No deer this weekend.

Last weekend went to another place near Brady. Only saw 4 deer in three days and none of them were close. Out of 20 hunters one axis and one doe in three days. Not looking good. I have yet to drop a string. Maybe Thanksgiving when I go again to Aspermont.

Been hunting about 4 sits out at my lease in Nixon.  Had 2 small bucks at 12 yards this week. Neither was legal.  I'm hoping to at least get a shot at some hogs one of these days.  Maybe the cooler weather will help out.

It has been harder this year for sure,I usually have had much better luck finding nice bucks.I am seeing a few does and small bucks but no shooters yet.Had a big doe come in to my set up Saturday evening. She had 2 button bucks and a yearling doe with her and big mama doe was in bad shape.Really pulled down with all those little ones.Starting to see more scrapes now and good pics of shooter bucks both day and night.Just need them to show when I am there.A lot of season left to hunt.

Had a big 6-point that is well known on our lease (Hill Country) -- which one of my nephews shot at on youth weekend and missed -- within 20 yards of me... with limbs between us.  The one lane I didn't clear (because I had the approach points covered to that spot, or so I thought).  After watching him for over 5-minutes repeatedly turn broadside to continue eating, I couldn't stand it... I got up off my stool (I ground hunt exclusively) and began inching my way to a spot about 3 yards closer that would offer me a clear shot.  Of course, he turned and began walking when I was almost in position, and he busted me.  I'm still sick about it.  I'm new to all this, especially ground hunting, so lesson learned: be patient and don't succumb to 'buck fever' so easily.

Had a young spike who is always hanging around come within 10 yards on Sunday (he was also hanging around on Saturday), but I keep giving him a pass as watching him has given me lots of good information on favored trails in the area and so forth.  Plus, he was shot at once by someone else (arrow merely took some hair on top of his back, we have photos) and was standing next to the aforementioned 6-pt when my nephew shot at him, so he has also had a bullet fly past his head.  I figure I don't want to jinx myself, so I leave him be, heh.

Kind of a bad weekend; very little movement, strange weather (windy, cold and sunny on Saturday; hot, muggy, cloudy and way too quiet on Sunday).  Friends/relatives hundreds of miles away on another lease (W/NW of Fort Worth) saw absolutely nothing all weekend.

Busted by does at 10 yards while setting up my 360 chair! I turned around to sit and look up; there's 5 does staring at me.. SNORT.  Hogs behind me fighting both days almost got introduced to my .45 ( why I went to find them without my bow is anyone's guess).....but go figure I found them all right. Scouted for white oaks and found many. Tomorrow those hogs are gonna get it. Here's pics of my setup. Too bad those are Willow oaks and note White oaks! Pics coming.

Made a nice shot on a fox squirrel at 22 yds.....those little dudes are tough, though. He climbed a tree with my arrow but another squirrel knocked him back to the ground defending his turf.

Couldn't get drawn on a doe...but it was looking good. A buck was between us an he picked me off up in the tree.

Wind and moon are working against me. Deer sightings are scarce this weekend.

My buddy shot two pigs, though.

We have seen several very nice bucks and rutting behavior is definitely occurring here in east TX. They hand at the edge of fields and rush out for the does, noses down and oblivious to us in vehicles. Trying to get set up on a route into/out of those fields....

Well seeing the rutting bucks (most were way better than shooters) made me sorta freak out and want to keep hunting but next week should be better without the full moon - hopefully it'll be cold as well. I covered more than 25 miles on foot this Wed-Sat looking for dominant white oaks and marking them on my GPS.....getting my scouting in DURING the season....d'oh! On a 7000 acre place you can cover a lot of territory and the river bottoms on this place are amazing. The deer were all over and pigs were so close I almost popped them with my 45 while hoping their parents might saunter by. They were fighting over food and I've never heard a pig scream like that. I thought it was a bobcat at first! Hopefully next Wed-Fri again.

View from the ground blind in Oak Central intersection, just off the creek system and in-between bedding areas:

Went pig hunting today at a buddy's place close to the house. It was my first hunt with the St.Judes bow "Hope". That is one slick bow and shoots real well. I had the pigs come in right at dark and by the time they got close enough to shoot at, it was too dark to pick a spot. We will have to try again in a few days.

Last week they seemed to be really chasing them. I almost stepped on a spike accompanied by a doe on Tuesday while looking for hogs in a bottom. He grunted at me as I stopped on the other side of a huge clump of head tall reeds, thinking I was walking into a hog's nest i readiedfor action. All of a sudden this head pokes around the corner and it's a big bodied spike...he trotted off. Probably ends up a cull if I see him again.

Lampasas Co.  Friday through Sunday was pretty much a bust; early Saturday morning, one of my nephews shot a 7-point with a rifle; a few does and a 4-point were seen in the afternoon, but the rest of the weekend was practically dead.  Wind was constantly blowing at 15-20 Mph and they were all bedded down.

Had a turkey at 12 yards on Saturday but he caught me drawing my bow, managed to get away.  This was after he'd gotten within 10 yards of me the previous day, almost walking into the area I had brushed in, but I didn't know he was there and accidentally spooked him when moving around glassing the area.  Frustrating for sure.

Got this one yesterday afternoon at a friends place about an hour from the house. I saw about 15 different hogs all through the cold afternoon and shot this little brown BBQ'er right before dark. I shot it with the St judes bow "Hope" and it went about 40yds.

Ive shot a total of three deer so far. A doe and a buck on our ranch in Webb county, and another doe on the Atascosa Wildlife Refuge down in Brownsville.  Hogs are at 5 right now....11 if you count the pregnant sow from the other night.....Population control at it's finest!

Nice boar and a perfect eating sow plus a big ol sow last evening. Saw 4 on my way in tonite,  but too far off and they were moving and might of smelled me. I couldn't cut them off .... And I'm standing in the middle of a field! Nice drive back home at 10 PM to surprise the wife.! Also found a complete skull/jaw with great cutters for decoration......Does were out all afternoon. The secondary rut could go anytime now. This was south. Over east near Flip on another place we are seeing some major bucks.

Going to hit the stand from mid-day on today for the first time in two weeks. Filled the feeder last weekend and had 188 pics on the trail cam...a nice 8 point in two of them.....lots of does during daylight hours.

The last pic was of the ranch donkey and a group of Boer goats destroying my timer/spinner....found it spread out on the ground when I got there.  At least he didn't stomp on the timer.

Thanks for the help Jeff!

Nice goin' Bisch!  You've really put some mojo into "Hope" in the short time you've had it.

Seems to me there's been more than just a few hero shots taken over that log.
