Title: Packable Rainwear
Post by: anw0625 on October 06, 2011, 08:27:00 PM
Who makes a packable rain jacket.  Something that would only be worn when raining and in a pack the rest of the time. :)  Thanks!

Sitka & Kuiu are two of the best. Very high quality but may be a little pricey.  i use them and have no complaints.

Cabela's space rain gear is pretty good for the price.  It's not real tough if you get into heavy brush but lots of guys I know use it for elk hunting.  It packs down just a little bigger than a pop can and is very light.

I don't normaly wear raingear while I'm hunting... I dress in wool.

However, I do carry a military issue poncho in case I get caught in a downpour, or around camp. Over the years, it's the best thing I've found!!!

I looked for a long time and chose the Russell Cyclone. I can roll the paint and jacket up to the size of a small hand towel. The pants have zippers that zip all the way up the leg to help you get them on over boots.
You can find them on sale right now in the Mossy Oak pattern for 60 percent off.

Second on Cabelas Space Rain.  Not much bigger than a pop can and works great on stand.  Not durable for hiking- but perfect for its purpose.

I've got the ASAT rain gear. Bought it for an elk hunt this year and needed it. Not bad. It's rain gear though. Packs small. Probably won't stand up to briars and despite the claim, it's not even close to breathable. Fairly quiet but not silent. About $100 for the suit.

Sitka for me. Pricey, yes but needed for where we hunt over here in Oz through thick bush and blackberry thorns.

I agree with the Cabelas Space Rain or if you want something more durable their MT50 stuff is nice too.

I like that comment on the MT50 from Cabela's. I've looked at that in every catalog. Maybe time to buy, it folds quite small.

Or a Sears poncho.
I lied about that looking in every catalog at the MT50. I'm now thinking about a poncho and quit that!(just read the poncho post above).
Yes, a Gortex poncho. There's lots of ponchos out there, but nothing looks real good. Just Google it.
The poncho is a very versatile piece of gear, could even be a tent like thingy in a real pinch.

I've carried around the space rain for yrs and its worked ok. But it is not very windproof. So I now use the bottoms and the mt050 jacket. The mto50 really cuts the wind and keeps me as snug as a bug in a rug.
