Thought I'd get a thread started for all to come on and tell what they saw on the day they hunted this year. If you hunt everyday, then post every day. We could all look back on it after the season and see how things went. Kinda like a Trad Gang journal. This could get lenghty but it ought to be fun. I'll start it off:
10-2-11 Hunted the pine stand off the bean field this morning. Saw 3-bucks together. 1-6pt,1-8pt.and a really nice 120-125" 8pt. All at 15 yards. Waiting on a real biggun. Also saw 5-coyotes. One of them only had 3 legs. Figure he got it caught in a trap. No shots presented on the yotes.
Winds-NW and 40 degrees.
-
No fair man, your always gonna see them daddy bucks you always do and us eastern folks gonna see nothing but baby bucks, Seriously though, a good idea. Itll be interesting.
-
This is a great idea. I hunted opening morning 10-1-11, didn't see any deer but I heard and saw nature at its finest. Been sitting for a few hours when I heard some leaves rustling and then a squeal, I turned to look... nothing. After a few seconds I see the a large bobcat at about 60 yds with a rabbit in its mouth. Thought that was pretty cool.
-
I'll play......9/27/11: 5 hours saw 0, 10/2/11 5 hours saw 0. This is normal for me!! :dunno:

I hunted this morning and a two and a half year old seven point come by at 10 yards. I was really studying him when he glanced up and noticed this thing in a tree. After a short minute he decided he didn't like it and high footed off. About thirty minutes later a doe and fawn came to within about 15 yards, then continued on their way. Iowa issues only one tag for my area, so I wasn't going to shoot her. Five minutes later in walks three 6 pt. bucks. Two of them came within one foot of my stand, and presented numerous opportunities for a shot. It was fun watching them begin the fall ritual of sparring and pushing each other around. Now, I'm going to wait for their dad to show up.

2 Oct. 2011: 1 coon, 7 turkeys, 1 hog @ 90lbs, The longest legged bobcat I've ever seen, first thought it might be a fawn till it turned and I saw the head. Tried to put the sneak on the hog but in an open field it just wasn't to be.
-
Oct.3, 2011: 1 spike horn that died 40 yards from where KHALVERSON shot it!
-
October 1, 2011: Shot first archery deer of any kind. Doe round about 75lb dressed.
-
Squirrles, 8 hen turkeys and 2 doe's. No bears but I really wanted one of those doe's but no shot.
It was a great afternoon!!
-
Basket rack 8pt and a doe with twins, had the doe at 20 yards but facing me and she was nervous about a truck that pulled off the road. So no shot for me :(
-
10-3-2011 my first day ever in the deer woods with a Traditional bow. saw 4 doe, but they saw me first, so no shot. I was happy to just see some deer. I also had an owl land about 5 feet from me in another tree. that was really cool I have never seen one that close, an I literally didnt hear a sound him on video, but he didnt hang around long.
headed out in the am and will post again, this is a great idea, if someone scores, post a pic with the story.

(1) cotton mouth water mocassin hunting up the slope I was on from one of the last remaining water holes. It slithered slowly in the faltering light checking out each opening in the rock & dirt sides almost 15' down. After cresting it went off into the woods. Kinda cool.
-
1Oct. Sage hen hunting in northern Nevada. Saw antelope and deer. Hens were in abundance, but flushed too far for longbow and flu flu's. Lost one. Eventually shot my two bird limit with my son's shotgun. I was the only archer there. I now have Dutch over fare!
-
01 Oct AM: bumped a deer in the dark maybe 30 yards from my stand. Saw several does on the way out. PM hunt, saw a dow and two yearlings cross the ridge maybe 40 yards in front of me.
02 Oct: No deer. Assorted birds, squirrels, and a turtle.
03 Oct: Played "Who's the biggest retard" with a doe for an hour or so. Almost got to full draw twice, but didn't. Apparantly, I'm the biggest retard. But it was fun.

Oct. 1st. Hunted red and white oaks. Just before daylight had two deer spook at about 19yds. One of them caught my movement as I was getting settled in on my climber. They just fed off the other way.
Had several little, bitty, racked bucks feed around through the early morning.
Didn't bring enough clothes and was shivering so got down a little early. While I was getting my things together at base of tree a doe came trotting in to the acorns. Killed her at 9:15am.
Oct. 2nd AM. Hunted same place. Again had two deer spook right before daylight at about 8yds. Saw the forms ease off.
Two small bucks fed by and I grunted one back up to right under my tree, just to see if it would respond. Another little buck came from the opposite direction and fed off...I grunted at him and he spooked. Trotted of with tail up. First deer I've ever spooked with grunt tube.
About 8:30am had a deer blow at me from up the hill..couldn't tell what it was. Little later a doe and yrling came in too far to shoot.
Oct. 3rd. 5:15pm. Hunted a main trail in some planted pines. Had a doe and yrling feed out (mushrooms) at 5:15pm. Too far. Another big doe came up from bottom at 5:45pm too far.

10/1/11, season opener. Nasty weather with rain and snow. Hunted out of my Summit climber. Had a momma and little one under my stand.
Wet cold and bored, came down and still hunted around 10 am. Stalked up on two nice 8 points bedded. Tried to get close enough for a shot but was spotted at 40 yards. They jumped up but moved away slowly as I watched with my binos.
Hope they stay in the general area!
Still hunted until 5pm and saw 3 more doe but no shots taken.
10/3/11. Heavy rain and windy. Sat in my ladder stand after work from 4:30 until dark. Didn't see a deer.
-
Sounds like it's been a wet weekend for everyone. Better weather is coming,I hope.

Hunting the Adirondacks in Johnstown,N.Y. At Adkmountainken's "AdkAttack"...
At the end of a long, wet, rainy day of hunting. Walking down the logging road, coming down off the mountain.....
A Black Bear, crossed the logging road about 25 yards in front of me!!!!! :scared:
It was a day to remember!!!!! :bigsmyl:

10/1/11 AM Hunt
I told myself I would stay on stand till 10:00 am before retruning to the cabin for breakfast. Well at 9:50 the legs of a doe materialized on the trail in front of me. A total of 7 does came out and I was unable to get a shot. They acted like they got a whiff of me, but never blew and walked past. One of the does had a tumor growth about the size of a softball on her shoulder and another under her chin. At first I thought it was her tounge hanging out. All of the deer looked skinny. The drought is taking its toll on the deer. I climbed down after they had left the area. It was one of those spiritual mornings for me. No shot, but a great experience getting to be witness to the outdoors. Good morning in the woods with longbow in hand.

10/1/11
Missed the morning hunt due to rain.
Hunted the evening from ground blind and cannot even begin to count the number of squirrels. Had two does make their way down from a bedding area but only got to within 30 yards "out of my confident shooting range". Sat about another 45 minutes after the does made their way out to notice a large brown mass in the thicket. I couldnt quite make out if it was a buck or doe until he walked into a clearing about 65 yards out and showed me all eight points of his rack and his four pointed friend who was trailing behind him.
All in all a great hunt, and hope to see him again soon.

Saturday October 1st.
Saw lots of Fox Squirrels and a hawk of some sort. Not a redtail. I saw zero whitetails and froze my backside off in the cold rain.... Hunted near red and white oaks off an inside corner near some corn and beans.
-

-
Oct 1st
saw 4 does in breaks of rain. No shots sat from 2 to dark
Oct 2nd
Morning sat until 1130 only saw a sow with two cubs....the teeth popping and bluff charge let us know we were too close lol
Afternoon, saw 5 does, then at 6pm had a big doe with a broken front leg come in, 20 yd shot, she ran 40yds and was done. First deer of the year and first deer with my new to me shrew classic hunter!

Took my dog for a walk tonight and found a small snake. I didn't know what it was, so I caught it, put it in the only container I had (new poop bag) and brought it home. A jar, magnifying glass and computer allowed me to ID it as a Northern Brown Snake. Cool! I had never met one before. They usually only grow to about 13 inches.
I took it back and let it go where I found it. It looked SO happy to be back home!
Going to camp this weekend, then I will be gone for real at the end of the month. I'll hunt from the 29th till Nov 20th. Of course, all the deer are down here where I live. Go figure!
Be careful on the roads. Deer are getting slammed like crazy lately.

My question to you Is why just because a yote has three legs figured it have been caught in a trap? Trapping does not cut legs off or feet for that matter!!!A coyote has a better chance of losing a leg by some gun happy deer hunter then a trap. I dont know what you think you know about trapping i have over 30 yrs under my belt and have never took a foot off a fox or yote .

Sept 30 Saw my big buck at about 6:50 PM, he came out about 60 yards from me.. He did make eye contact with my grunt call but chose to go over the ridge and disappear.
Ten minutes later had a 120ish 4x4 and a 130ish 5x5 coming in on a different trail, but a fickle wind betrayed me. Super great set to see three good bucks inside of 15 minutes.
Same tree Oct 1 AM.. Heard deer moving in the pre-shooting light dark. Had one group of three, 2 does and a young buck come in. Little buck was following (chasing) the girls around with his tongue hanging out as if it was sexy. Then I had a family group of 4 come in about 50-60 yards down wind and kept moving back and forth trying to pin point me. Last a doe and fawn. The doe presented herself for a shot but not for long enough for me to make it.
-
Don't know I'll post my whole journal here but here's from yesterday...
Had a quick still-hunt tonight after work. Saw a fuzzy caterpillar, several squirrels and a couple of deer.
One doe snorted at me from the log crossing (never got a good look at her). Saw a very nice buck by the corner. His antlers were a bit skinny but tall and festooned with points (12ish). Unfortunately he was on private land close to me. I couldn't shoot him unless he turned onto the public land, but practiced stalking him nonetheless. Got to within 25 yards and stopped. He did the rest of the work and crossed the trail I figured he would and gave me a virtual broadside shot at about 8 yards.
I'm no poacher - he's still out there.

Thank goodness no deer came in to interrupt all the fun.
-
Writing a day late. Seen a sleeping coyote close up and another one close up and blew it. lots of vally quail. And some wize cracking ground squirrels making fun at my shooting abilties .Cool sunrise and sunset.

10-6-11
Hunted the beans this evening but NO deer. Skunked. But the mosquitos got me good. Had to hunt the ground cause the stand I wanted to hunt the wind was bad.
-
sat in a natural ground blind in my bush in a bag this afternoon after work waiting and hoping a fallow deer would walk by. nope...only saw some kangaroos. saw a kookaburra dive onto the ground and catch something.
-
October 4 I had a deer spin on the shot and nicked her shoulder...no harm done.
-
October 1. one nice buck, one small 8 pointer, no sign of any pheasants, some turkeys, 3 racoons, wood ducks, thousands of robins, a few doves, two squirrels, and a coopers hawk that had a hankering for a robin supper.
-
10-5: sat in a new stand from about 3:30---dark. Had several does and fawns behind me at about 15-20 yds....no shot, but they sure made a whold lot of noise crunching down on those nuts!! Squirrels were fighting over the same nuts---must have been good ones!!
-
10-6
Sat in my stand from 6:45 am until noon and saw zero deer movement. Lots of squirrels, but no deer. I think the area I hunted is getting too much pressure. I plan to hunt a double inside corner tomorrow morning further back into the wildlife area.
-
10/6/11.
Decided to squirrel hunt after work this evening as I only had a couple hours and hunted behind the house.
I took 3 shots at 2 different squirrels, missed all 3 times! Close but no cigar.
Turned back towards home and caught movement at a field edge. I saw 4 bucks sparring. I stalked as close as I could but ran out of cover.
They, of course, moved the other way and as they jumped a fence I saw a 5th buck. The last one was a very nice 8 point. I'm sure it's one of the ones I saw last Saturday.
No game taken but a very enjoyable evening in the woods.
-
10/7
Saw 3 does near a double inside corner on public hunting ground all before 10am. One was broadside at 7 yards, but busted me at half draw and bolted. For fun I shot at a leaf where she was standing and drilled it. I wish it woulda been her.... next time.
As a side note, one doe was feeding underneath my stand and darn near stuck her head through the loop of my hoist rope that had fallen and doubled over on itself. That would have been bad. Can you imagine a full grown doe tangled in a line that is attached to your stand? Better HOLD ON!
Also, they have started hitting the acorns finally.
-
No hunting today, working a double. Won't get out again until Sun morning:(
-
In a little over 3 hours on stand today, my son and I saw 8 does, 2 turkeys, 2 foxes and a few squirrels! "Oh, what a beautiful morn-ing..."
-
Passed a fat six point, probably regret it later in the season, but have lots of time, although he gave me a nice 15 yard quartering away shot, awesome morning in Pa.
-
Took a vacation day from work today and hunted morning and evening. Saw a porcupine, gray squirrels, and a bunch of chipmunks. No deer.
-
Went out for the first time this year. Walked the trails behind my house for 2 1/2 hours. Heard several deer/turkeys moving through the thick balsams. Bumped one deer as I moved along. nearly got a shot at a red squirrel but he wouldn't sit still long enough. day was beautiful and Iwas happy.
-
Nothing today......?
-
Took the day off from hunting today because I got a deer yesterday. Spent some well deserved family time...it felt good to have a deer in the freezer and be able to domesticate for a day or two.
-
I hunted with a good friend of mine this evening. Sat in a great looking spot over some corn but didn't see any deer. Saw lots of tree rats eating the corn though. Wish I brought in my judo's
-
8 Oct.,
Spent the day hunting in a monsoon, 6" of rain, 30 - 40 mph wind gusts, just a really pleasant day.
Saw 3 does around 8:30am but they fed away from my position. Decided to just drive and do some spot & stalk. Got in to 3 groups of Osceola's, made 2 stalks on each group but got busted each time I attempted a shot. Stalked a group of 5 Gobblers for 1/2 a mile and never had a time without 3 looking around while 2 fed. Other groups were 9 and 17 birds. Just too many eyes.
Going to do it all again tomorrow, weather report is same as today.
-
10/8/11
I still hunted today. This morning I saw a deer's ear flicking about 50 yards out. I started glassing and saw it was a doe with 2 little ones. I got to within 20 yards and hunkered down to see what happened. After a while the wind changed and they busted me.
This afternoon I spotted 2 doe and a fawn out about 70 yards feeding my way. I set up against a tree with some cover beside the old logging road the deer like to travel on with the road to my left as I'm a righty. I lost sight of them for a bit and when they came out they where on my right at about 20 yards. I tried to twist around to get in position for a shot on the first big doe but she saw me and all 3 boogered out of sight.
I moved on around the hill to the edge of a meadow. I was sitting against a tree enjoying the evening and a nice 6 point appeared from nowhere. He was about 20 yards and also on the wrong side for me to shoot. I would move a little every time his head was behind a tree and he came through within 12 to 15 yards broadside and gone before I could get twisted around for a shot. He never saw me and the wind was perfect. He jumped a fence and went into the meadow to feed.
A few minutes later another doe came towards me following the same path the 6 point did. I was ready for the 12 yard chip shot that I knew was coming. I had my bow at half draw and was waiting for her to clear the last tree. When she cleared and I was coming to full draw she turned straight at me and caught my movement. The only shot I had was straight on with her looking right at me, which I wouldn't take. She rattled out of there for 2 or 3 jumps and then started the head bobbing. She never did figure out what I was and fooled around for a while while my legs were cramping and screaming for relief. She finally fed off towards the meadow.
I'm commited to taking another deer on the ground this year. I really enjoy the close encounters and the challenge. Not to mention I get to hunt all season and don't get tired dragging deer out of the woods!
:D
-
10/8/11 They didnt come in like the unlucky one did on Tuesday stayed out about 50 yards flicking there tails and noseing the dead air then just kinda dissapeared.
-
Well went to hang stands today and on the way out walked up on a doe on the trail we used to walk in. She was feeding on acorns. Great day and it was my first time being in the woods for over a years. Missed all of last season.
-
Was out before sunup yesterday close to where I saw a decent buck a few days ago. Saw a few squirrels but no deer.

Yesterday, at 21 paces and beyond - two 2-1/2 year olds (one 9-point, the other an eight) and a basket rack all three sparring and shoving each other around,,, and a free roaming house cat, and gobs of tree squirrels and grinnies.
-
A yearling spike, 2 bald eagles, various species of tweetie birds, and heard a bunch of turkeys.
-
I was not hunting but my wife and I went for a 4 wheeler ride from camp.
About 10 min from camp we were on a trail and encountered a cow Moose. She was laying off the trail about 20 yards or less just watching us ride by. We stoped and watched her a few min then she got up so we continued our ride.
Of course no camera or cell phone to take a pic. We finished the ride around the loop ( about half hour or more) and came back to see if she was still there. We didn't see her at first so decided to turn on the trail where she was laying before.
My wife was ahead of me and when she started down the trail the Moose stood up which was 10 or 15 yards from my wife lol. We couldn't back up fast enough and we left. Did not want to get the Moose mad lo.
-
Turkey hunting this morning in my Double Bull...had a BIG 8 point walk right by like it wasn't even there...15yds!
One problem, our deer season doesn't open till this coming Saturday.
Doe came 5 minutes before him and walked off snorting at the blind. And even the little buck trailing behind the big boy was nervous as heck looking as he walked by.....big boy could care less.
He's big!

This is what I saw Friday afternoon (10/7).......but she did not see me!

This is what I saw Friday afternoon (10/7).......but she did not see me.
Nice way to go. Looks like you might be a little happy in that picture.
Nothing showed to my calling yesterday but two jack rabbits ,seen lots of them and buches of cotontails . Ground squirrels and the back end of a redtail after it swooped me .
-
Went out with my wife. Was going to put her at a place she had not been to before. We got to where I was going to have her sit. Jumped two does. Took a couple more steps and up popped two more and a very large ten point buck, about 15 yards. It did not give me a shot. Just as well, my daughter had a baby tonight and we have to leave and head north to see our new granddaughter and 5 year old grandson. And deliver a bow to the 14 year old son of the man that delivered her baby. No time to get to a hospital. All are doing fine.
-
Just a fox, carrying a little red sack of meat that I think used to be a squirrel.

Went with ADKmountainken to the mountain this AM.... At about 8:30 I hear a turkey gobble, then again a bit closer, and again real close.I get ready with the bow on my toe and some tension on the string. 2 toms came down headed right for my shooting lane. One was a Jake and the other....OH baby he is a slammer. Beard like a hemp rope and a chest like a oil drum. Need to go 6-8 more steps and when they go behind the big beech I can draw. Wham....they put the brakes on and did nothing. 15 minutes they just milled around in that same spot and then left the way they came. No putts ,no noise of any kind just walked away. But it was a bit of excitement for a few minutes, most I have had so far this year!!
-
Went out Saturday night 10/8 Saw 4 turkeys, multiple squirrels, a racoon and a guy walk past riding a horse at 15 yards (Neither the horse or the guys noticed me) I was hunting from the ground using a bush in a bag.

Saw about two dozen turkeys over the weekend. Got busted by a big doe with her twins while ground hunting. She just kept coming straight at me and finally noticed me when she was about 5 yards away. It was an area where two trails cross. She started blowing and snorting and didn't stop until she got to the next county over.
-
a groundhog.
-
Oct.11, Saw two doe and a dandy (for PA.) 125-130" 8pt. Hunting from the ground but no luck. Great night though!
-
10/08/11
Counted Coup on a grey squirrel with my flu flu fletching.
Heard a couple of deer pass through about 60 yards away, but they stayed on the other side of the briar patch.
Headed up to the North Woods for 4 days of camping, stumping and hunting tomorrow morning.
Great thread idea. I enjoy reading every one's success stories, but this is a thread I can actually participate in...
-
Oct. 5th AM. Hunted over some red oak acorns. Had a cowhorn come in 7:30am to about 10yds. He eventually smelled me and left.
Two doe came in down wind about 70yds off at 8:30am smelled me then dropped off the ridge out of sight.
Oct. 6th AM. Hunted over red oak acorns on a shelf overlooking creek bottom. Bunch of doe and yrlings came in to about 60yds above me and fed off.
Oct. 7th AM. Went back to same as above only climbed tree where I saw the deer. Got busted at 7:15am by a big bodied deer and another I couldn't make out. They came up from behind me and saw me move.
8:15am 8pt came up from the bottom and I killed it at 18 steps. Double lung, ran about 60yds.
Haven't hunted since..suppose to start raining today at about 3:00pm and rain through Thurs. Will hunt Fri. morning.

Morning-a big fat coon
Evening- not a single thing
Time to leave the bean fields and head up to the corn.
-
Took care of a stand this AM and scouted just a bit....opener is on Sat. for Southern Zone around here. Not much going on, a storm is brewing and things seem to be laying low!

Ya know Rizzy...... I have decided that you are jealous of Ben and this is your attempt, however lame it might be, to have a thread like his HH one.

10/12/11
Out for just a short time this evening. Saw 2 doe but was busted and no shot.
Saw a spike and a 6 point together in a field but where going the other way and fed out of sight.
-
3 long beards, one old doe, no shot?
-
Finally got a "good wind" tonight, so I tried again.. 2 bucks both shooters (125-140)but nothing inside of 50 yards.. So far they haven't busted me, so Maybe I'll try again tomorrow night as it looks like the wind is going to stay out of the north.
-
a couple does, 3 armadillos, 2 skunks, and 4 coons.
the coons left minus one of their buddies
-
Lots of vally quail, Bunnies' and jacks. No coyotes wanted to play.
-
I saw an old osage bow stave with severe natural reflex sitting in the corner of my bow shop. I saw it come in from a friends woods so I wrestled it around for almost a year & now it's down on the bench.
My next project!

Oct. 14th am.
Walked up on a doe before daylight going in, that was heading into a standing cornfield and saw one big doe or small buck.. couldn't tell..at 7:15 am. It was about 50yds in mature planted pines and dogwoods heading somewhere at a fast walk and jog.
Will go in the morning..maybe this afternoon too..if wind lays a little.
-
Had the day off and decided to hit the woods in spite of a sketchy forecast - windy and 90% chance of rain. Got up this morning and saw the chance of rain was down to 60% though the radar seemed to disagree with that prediction.
Things were moist and windy - which is great for people trying to move quietly - and it never did rain. Saw no deer but a couple of squirrels. Got close to one big fox squirrel - he was on the ground with his head to the right of a tiny sapling and his body to the left. I took careful aim and - you guessed it - hit the tiny sapling. Should have aimed at that.

Spent the last few days in the U.P. Unseasonably warm, sunny days and swirling winds, coupled with a full moon and clear nights made for poor hunting. They were moving but only after the sun went down.

Buried in does last night. Too darn many eyes to pull off a shot and then "Ole Snort" had to tell the world and the buck of my eye that I was there. Great evening just the same

Nice mourning for the New York opener, a bit windy but not to bad where I was. Saw a few squirrels, lots of geese flying. No deer today, sat for 3 hours........

A beautiful fall morning; clear, not much wind, 35 degrees. Saw about 15 does, one little 4x4 whitetail, maybe 20 turkeys. One doe on the ground, and I'm saving my next turkey for later in the season. Now it is the search for a couple of nice bucks that I know are in the area. Woo Hoo!
-
Oct. 15th am.
Didn't see anything this morning. First hunt not to see deer in the 7 mornings I've hunted. Will try again in the morning.
-
Day light to 11:00am, windy - 60's - bad head cold = no deer!
-
Hunted the evening tonight, nothing but squirrels and chipmunks.
-
Found a Buck killin stand and three general deer killin stands today.
Cold front coming on Wednesday. Y'all might see Woods' next deer this weekend!! :saywhat: :saywhat:

just got back from a 4 day hunt in Bedford Pa. a friend and myself battled the rain, but didnt see a tail!!!! Even though we didnt have any luck, hunting with a friend is always a great time. the quest will continue. We hunted on 27,826 acres of state game lands, which I am not used to.
-
Had a tree frog jump on my arrow and craul up and perch on the broadhead, like he was hopeing for a ride. Shooed him away with a weed, later he jumped on you headdress (gillie suit) I gave him a fling, the higlight of my hunt.
-
This Morning, I seen four does, and two fork horn bucks. Missed one coyote. Went to leave and came upon another rise, and I seen movement, it was a two year old buck with straight tines, I decided to try and stalk him, then decided that if I get within 15 yards, I would harvest him. I was about two steps away when he took off on his own walking away. I know some say I should of shot him, but hey was fun anyway.
-
I watched a buck with one antler that was palmated, the other normal, from about 50 yards for over 10 minutes this morning. I didn't have any desire to shoot him, but just wanted to watch. He stood perfectly still for the whole time except for slow and slight head turns as he watched an open area. He then faded into some heavy brush.
The gut pile from yesterday's doe was already gone, although I have never seen a coyote on the place I am hunting. The magpies must have had a feast!
I also saw 4 more bucks (all small) and around 15 does, along with the same flock of turkeys that I have been watching since September. A nice morning, around 40 degrees, light wind, and overcast.
-
I might as well be hunting on the moon! Seeing nothing last 3 trips out. I see plenty driving home. They are all eating in people's yards.
-
Had a squirrel get chased by a chipmunk. He stopped at about arms reach and stood on 2 feet while he was breathing really hard. I never thought of a squirrel being out of breathe before.
It was cool, he just sat there while he caught his breathe before ambling on.
-
10/15 & 10/16
Lots of squirrels and chipmonks, but 0 deer. Full moon = bad hunting I guess.
-
Cool thread. I enjoy hearing what you guys and gals see in your part of the country.
I can't even keep track of all the game I have seen since our season for pronghorns opened Aug 15th.
I will just start with today. Right at light I spotted 2 bull elk while I was hunting deer. I do have an elk tag for this area and went after the bulls. They won as I lost them.
I saw a few hundred pronghorns today, (my tags are already filled), about twenty doe mule deer, and two 4x4 mulie bucks. I could not try a stalk on the bucks because I am hunting some private, and the landowner only wants cull bucks shot. No 3x4's or 2x3's spotted today for a stalk.
Also saw a raccoon, and called a pair of coyotes, but they circled downwind and caught my scent way out of range, 200 yards or so. Them buggers can sure smell. What a test for those gimmick scent suits and spray.
Saw lots of chipmunks also, and a few sage grouse.
Yesterday I just saw a few does, and introduced a jackrabbit to a 160 VPA glued to a Douglas Fir shaft. (to graphic for pics)
-
Several dozen turkeys and two yearling does. One of the turkeys tempted me at 40 yards for a time, and one of the yearling does hung around within 15 yards for a half hour. Even me coughing on my chew several times did not scare her off as I sat on my Huntmore chair. Neither did turning to get a drink of RC Cola, but when the cola plastic bottle unkinked later, she was gone.
-
Some rabbits and squirrels making fun of my shooting . Quail dodging my arrows . But one got unlucky.
-
A beautifull dark haired brown eyed lil petite girl,,oh yea i see her every morning,,she said would i please turn the alarm clock off.Ok, seriously, i saw some turkeys, about 14 of them including a white hen. They walked right in front of me in my natural ground bline under limbs that hang all the way to the ground on a big live oak tree.A little while after they were gone i watched a hawk do a dive bomb on something in the thicket next to me.No deer today.
-
Gonna give 'em a break this morning. The wind is blowing out of the north at about 35-40; reminds me of why we don't live in Casper any more. Tomorrow looks like a better day, but if the wind dies, I will go out this afternoon.
-
10-16-11
Morning- Had a pretty good day. Finally got to hunt one of my favorite stands. Saw 5 deer. 4-does and one very nice buck. I really, really thought long and hard about shooting this 10 pointer but decided to let him pass. He was borderline of what I am looking for. He will be a dandy next year for sure!
But I was able to put an arrow in something later. This poor ol sheep killer yote never saw the 160 snuffer coming at her. :bigsmyl:
Evening: Hunted a new/old stand out of our core area. Bad swirling winds made this a wise decision. Saw deer and heard alot of snorting. I think one deer snorted so much she/he got a sore throat.
Good day to hunt and hang out at the camp.
-
I will say that the sign is really starting to pick up. Saw alot of new rubs and old scrapes starting to be tended. About 10-14 days and things out to get started.
-
10/14 - 10/15
Back from a cold and wet up north tent camping hunt.
Saw squirrels the size of house cats... no shots.
Saw about 8 deer while cruising the trails in the truck.
Saw 3 does from a ground blind. They were kind enough to offer 2 shots... I was kind enough to miss... First shots at deer with my long bow, so that was a big thrill for me.
My son saw 2 deer from his blind, no shots though. He was excited to have called them in with the grunt tube. He also saw some coyotes or some such critters at dark comming in to check out his doe bleets.
Had a nice chat with another recurve hunter at noon on Saturday.
Good times...

Oct. 17th am
Hunted a red oak shelf and saw 1 gobbler at about 20yds. 7:15am. Will I was trying not to get picked out by him a deer came across above me through the oak ridge at about 60yds. Wasn't a big deer, but couldn't make it out.
Bout 8:00am a yrling spike came down from the ridge and caught my wind. He hopped all around blowing for about 20 minutes. The yrling with him never paid no mind..just kept feeding.
That was it for this morning.
I did however prove something for myself. Peeing in a scrape does work. There's a scrape on the edge of a fence line and cornfield I walk by every time I go hunting behind my house and it hasn't been touched all season..was untouched this morning, so I let loose in it going in before daylight and when I came out there were tracks all in it and it has been scuffed up good.

Oct 17
After sitting in a stand for a couple hours, I decided to move to a different stand which I did. After climbing to the top of the ladder stand, I observed this buck watching me from a distance of about 30-40 yards. He is bedded with his body tucked under long grasses and just his head exposed. I took a couple pics with my small digital camera before he stood up and slowly walked away. He is right in the center of the photo so you might have to zoom in in order to see him. It was a case of not what I saw but of what was seeing me.

I gave up an area I was hunting as late as yesterday and found a new area. Well the wind wasn't right for the new spot I found and slowly made my way back to yesterday's spot to find HUGE buck with in range of where I sat yesterday.
Does anyone have a crystal ball for sale? I'm so frustrated!
-
17 Oct evening;
Created a ground blind and saw 4 does and 4 bucks (all little guys) along with the same bunch of turkeys that I have been messing with for quite a while. Two jakes almost tempted me, but I held off. The wind was down to 15-20, so it was a pleasant evening. Still waiting for a big buck to show himself.
-
Saw 3 small bucks this evening. No does but a butt load of squirrels. No shots.
-
I saw hundreds of antelope again this evening, 6 mulie does/fawns, 2 4x4 bucks, and a spike. I never tried a stalk because I can only hunt for a cull deer on this property. I can only hunt a mature 3x4, 2x4, ect. No elk seen today.
I did find an arrowhead yesterday. Tip broke off like it was shot at something. Really makes a guy wonder what it was shot at.
-
had a spike buck run two little does to me this mornnin, just as she popped around a tree i was at full draw with a frontal shot at 5 yds. , i passed, and got snorted at, oh well....
-
Today, I saw lots of saw dust, got 3 bows glued up, nailed the wieght on two pup recurves, and a Prairie Predator (midsized longbow). didn't get to hunt but got to build bows for a living.
-
Sounds like money Mike, hope you get caught up.

18 Oct morning,
Mid 30s with a north wind, but eventually the sun came up and made for a pleasant morning. Saw around 10 does and 4 bucks along with the ever present turkeys. One buck was a nice 4x4, high and wide. Watched him from about 70 yards, but had no way to get closer. He left the country when the wind busted me.
-
Hunted for 6 hours.....saw 1 red squirrel. :dunno:
-
Oct 8th and 9th spent most of the time scouting for a place
To ambush some hogs. 3 pm on the 9 th found a water hole about 30 yards off a dirt road with 5 wallows and tore up with tracks. Got the wind right and sat down. The last 1/2 of light I saw 1 white toyota, 1 silver Toyota and a red GMC drive right buy the water hole and me 10 min after the red GMC it was dark so i walk the mile and a half back to me silver GMC and went home. Gota love public land hunting in California
Huuummm maybe I should of got a lift from the red GMC back to my truck
-
a bib flock of turkeys and on sun eve 7 does 1 buck and a fawn
-
Sat for a couple hours in my ground blind hoping to see some turkeys ...no sightings , but they were there. Heard them cackling and whistling after sunrise.
Had 4 squirrels hopping around and 4 deer also came in close (3-5 yds!).....Waited them out since I don't want to spook 'em out yet. My daughter is wanting to sit with me and I want to make sure they keep coming in for while yet........

From today's journal...
In spite of continuing crummy weather forecast for the day, I went out for a short hunt this morning. Parked at the front entrance and walked the road in the dark up to the top of the middle entrance. Since the wind was supposed to be strong from the SW, I decided to still-hunt south back to my car.
The poncho got a decent workout on the way. Saw nothing until I got close to the powerline. There, I saw a grouse, heard a turkey and saw a couple of ducks. Too bad I wasn't bird hunting today.
Also saw the first rubs of the season just inside the woods by the field south of the stream crossing. These could have been made by the buck I saw the other day. If so, I now have a good idea when he's crossing onto the private property and approximately when.
-
Oct. 20th. Rain finally quit last night sometime, but wind was still whip'n it about 20mph. so I headed out this morning. I was late getting back in where I had left my climber..was daylight and about 7:15 time I got settled in the tree.
I was hunting the edge of a thick locust grove ridge and was about 15yds out of it in some red oaks.
8:15 I heard clucking behind me and see a couple of gobblers that had picked me out at about 25yds. The eased on off without too much noise.
Bout 15min. later I see a deer body moving through the locust grove at about 50yds. then about 5 more follow. All look like does yrlings and fawns. They are walking fast and get past me then I see one coming back down towards me. The wind is blowing my tree so hard I don't want to stand up so just sit and wait. Then the whole group is moving down towards me. They get about 25yds and turn back the way they were heading and out of sight.
Bout 9:00 I see another deer going along the same trail and it keeps going. I decide to grunt at it and try to stand up. I'm up with my back against the tree for support (wind) and here comes about 4 or 5 more does and yrlings. coming straight at me in the oaks. The lead one is about 15yds and when she sticks her head behind a big oak I start to draw, but they are straight downwind of me, catches my scent and she stops and then whirls and all run back where they came from.
Bout 5mins later I see another bigger body deer come out of the locust and down into the oaks about 50yds down below me. It doesn't show again.
I think I know about where all I saw where heading or came from, so get down at 11:30 and decide to move my climber down below where I want to get up in the morn. and am trying to decide if I want to hunt a trail or feed when I see a big doe walking the trail in the locust edge that I was trying to decide if or not to hunt in the morn. was 12:00.
I left the climber bout 75yds from the trail and will get on it in the morn.
-
5 great big ol fat gobblers 25 yds, and i shot a sapling!! while a spike buck watched me do it.
-
10-20
Grunted in a good 8 point buck this afternoon out by the power line. He looked to be 3 1/2. His antlers were outside his ears/. Probably about 125 inches. His neck was already swollen up!
Time was about 2:30 pm. Slight mist was falling and he was able to sneak in on me. 3 more steps and he would have been in my 2nd shooting lane. He switched direction and walked directly away from me. When he first showed up, he was already in my 1st shooting lane and I didn't see him until too late... :banghead:
-
In a hot spot (for Mass!) where Im seeing deer every night from 345 to dark. Tonights excitement came from a tall fork horn. It was really windy and I was going to back out of the deal early (probably sense where this is going!) I stand up, lower my bow, fold up my seat....about ready to get on my ladders and "crack"......I look toward the hot run....a clumsy looking fork just bouncing down the run toward me. I was able to pull up the bow, unclip it from the line, get into position....everything was working out sweet. He gets 10 yrds from my tree and slows down. He needed to take 2 mores steps litteraly to be in my lane. but does he do that? Course not  . Like an early teenager with a short attention span, he started zig zaggin all over the place and eventually out of range, where I watched him for another 20 minutes. He eventually made his way out of sight. I think Ill see him again! :campfire:
-
Tonight I spent an hour and a half within 40 yards and less of 20 or so turkeys. I watched several fly up to their roosts within shooting range, but I did not shoot. I saw a doe and her fawn, and a sharp shin hawk take a robin off a high branch.
-
As hard as this is to believe with me hunting open public land (Shawnee) and deep in the woods in some fairly thick cover..Locust thicket ridge along red and white oak benches. Not on a food plot or big field where you can see a lot of deer sometimes.
I saw over 50 deer this morning from 7:45 til 10:45. I actually stopped counting at 45 cause I began to see some coming back from the way the deer had been moving and figured I'd count some twice. However, after I stopped counting I saw another 10 or 15 heading the same way as the 45.
All were doe and yrlings except for a little 5pt or so with 4 other doe, a cowhorn spike, a 6pt or so smallish rack and a real big bodied deer I couldn't see it's rack but think it could have been a good one. All the bucks but the one with 4 doe were alone.
I haven't seen a decent buck this yr. except the one I killed, no fresh scrapes and just a few small rubs.
Also saw 4 different groups of turkeys this morning. Group of jakes, hen with almost grown poults, 2 hens flew down right at light and group of 6 grown looking hens..big size.
It's also hard to believe but I didn't shoot an arrow and had 22 deer from within 15yds of my tree to 1 yd. (2 were so close they could have reached up and touched my climber with their nose..another reason I didn't loose and arrow...only tree I could get in to see what I wanted and as high as I could get, then the stand wouldn't hold on the side of the tree I wanted)
The deer were not feeding but moving at a fast walk to a trot all in single file. All were in groups of 4's to 10 except the bucks. When one would get it's head behind a tree 4 to 9 more would be eyeballing all around. Tried to draw on two different does and a turkey and got busted each time.
I think they were all headed to the area where I killed a doe opening morn. I haven't been back in there since the first. Will hunt that spot in the morn.
-
Hunted a couple of hours this afternoon, saw nothing!
-
Five does and some fawns, a couple within 25 yards. couldn't shoot, the fawns were too cute.
-
About 7:50 PM pulling into Denville station in NJ, huge buck in front of me, hit the brakes hard and shut the headlights on the train, just missed him, oops does that count ?, Someone owes me big time !
-
I hate walking up on these thing! : :scared:

Oh yeah earlier in the morning before it WARMED up I saw 4 does at 10' while in a natural ground blind...bad thing is they were on my right side and I needed them on my left
-
Rain quit here in Michigan. I went down by the river at noon and started still hunting into the wind. After an hour I saw a doe and fawn ahead about 75 yards, walking slowly away from me. I started slowly following them looking for a buck. After about 10 minutes I noticed movement to my left about 35 yards, and there was a coyote stalking the deer I was following. I got in position to shoot and made a squeaking sound with my lips, and the coyote turned, and headed my way. I again noticed movement, and saw a second coyote, much closer than the first. When it went behind a tree I drew, and shot when it came back into view. The coyote ran about 40 yards and went down, the other one ran ahead, and I squeaked again, it turned and started back toward me, but spooked when it got near the dead one. With all the excitement, I don't know what happened to the deer, but skinned the coyote out for the wall. 66" BW longbow, douglas fir arrow, 160 grn grizzly head. Shot was about 10 yards
-
I am late starting but my best hunting day was Oct 2nd and I saw a bobcat passing at 50 yrds and lip squeaked it into 15. Did not shoot since season on them doesn't open till Dec 1. Saw several squirrels around. Had a porcupine walk right under my stand and they are pretty rare where I hunt. Had a doe come in at 9:30 am and spotted me in the tree and backed out without a shot. Got 2 does that evening.
-
Killed a good doe on some middle TN public land last night after setting up blind.
-
Saw a coyote at about 75 yards last night.
-
i had 4 does come in, i was set up a little to far off of the trail, trying to stay downwind..
and a coyote at 20-25yds. just as i was drawing he changed directions and started coming closer, then behind my tree, by the time i got turned around to the other side of my tree he was too far.

10-22-11-Up by the corn field
Myself and longbowben hunted our front stands this am. I have one on each side of the highwall. I elected to hunt the one on the corn side and saw nothing. Ben hunted his stand and guess what.....you guessed it,he saw a good 8pt. acrossed the highwall by my other stand.
:banghead:
He said it was a nice 120 class buck. Not the buck I'm after but still would have been better than my 0 sightings.
We did see alot of active scrapes while we were walking out. Most of them will die off but it's good to see the bucks are getting started. Tomorrow is another day.
I'm workng a double right now but Ben is hunting. I have a funny feeling I'm going to get a call tonight with those beautiful words...."I got a big one down". Just a gut feeling.
-
I saw hundreds of antelope again this morning, normal stuff here. Saw a few small bucks and some does/fawns. No shooter bucks. Has to be a cull deer here where I'm hunting. Then I spotted 3 big bull elk. they were from 300-330 class. Whatch them feeding along a draw. I went waaaay around to get the wind right, got down in the draw they were feeding along. Worked my way up there and they were gone. I hiked up a ridge and spotted them bedded right below me. I went waaaay back around, slipped in another draw they were bedded in, got to around 40 yards, then the darn wind switched. They headed out. I went the direction they went into some badlands to look for them. I get another 3/4 in that nasty stuff and spot a bull antlers sticking up out of the draw. Sweet! I ditch my pack and boots, stalk up to 20 yards of the bedded bull. No shot, If I raise up he'll see and bolt. I wait for twentie or so, arrow nocked. I'm hoping he stands up when the sun starts to hit him and he needs a new bed. Then the wind is acting funny again, and suddenly another big bull that I couldn't see stands up, all I can see is his head and antlers. His nose goes up and they both blow out of there. Rats! The biggest was a monster 7X7, and the bull I original seen was a monster 5X6. That darn wind has saved so many animals lives in my 28 years of bowhunting!! It is gun season, so it's tough hunting. These bulls have seen it all by now this season. I could grab a rifle and easily kill one tonight, but I am a true bowhunter. No guns for me. Call me crazy. I'm to beat to go out this evening, I'll try again tommorrow.
-
Stay the course Shedrock,do it the hard way! Keep us informed dude. Thanks for sharing.
-
Had a great night saw lots of deer and had a couple good bucks go by.One was a 130 class 9 pt at 8 yards had to hang my bow up so i wouldn't get tempted.Ready for tomorrow things are starting to get going.
-
Was only able to hunt a couple hours Sat. morning. Saw 6 does and a bunch of squirrels. No shots.
-
Hunted yesterday morning on a red oak, white oak bench next to a thicket. This is the area I had seen so many deer going to the day before.
Problem was the wind was just opposite of what was called for and blowing right back into the area 99% of the deer had come from the day before. I didn't see anything come from that direction.
I ended up seeing 14 does and yrlings and no shot. Got busted trying to turn around the tree when big doe changed sides, same scenario again with another doe and yrling, but decided not to try and turn, but wait till the big doe got past me...never saw here again.
Saw a group of 9 does and yrlings going the other way up in the thicket at 10:00 and while I was getting my stand together on the ground at 12:30 I look up and see 2 white tails taking off and then blowing down in the bottom.
-
I saw 11 does/fawns, a 4X4 and a little 3X3 buck. Deer season is closed now. :(
Looked all over, up and down for the bull elk I got into yesterday, put 4+ miles on my tired legs and never saw a single elk.
I'm sure ready for my Missouri deer hunt so I can only walk a couple hundred yards and let them come to me. I do enjoy sitting on my rear hunting now and then. ;)
-
I for got my wool jacket this morning, so that meant I was a still hunter and not a sitting hunter. I played around with a doe and her fawn for a while. then took a slow hike and found a bunch of woodcocks. They would timber doodle their way along a wet slope. I use to love woodcock hunting with a bow. they quite often drop back into cover quickly and give one another chance, but this morning I was a bird watcher, no migratory stamp. A scruffy warped racked 8 pointer got up near the woodcocks. thought about the shot, but I changed my mind when he put it in high gear.
-
Saw the east end of a west bounding white tail thru the dry brush. Too danged hot and dry around here but a nice day to be out...

Looks to me you will have to move your stand again :biglaugh:
Nice buck.
-
I saw a doe at about 50 yards. She bedded for an hour then something spooked her off.
-
-
Finally got out to hunt tonight for the 1st time this season. Saw eight does/fawns. Nothing closer than ~70yds plus. Great time in the woods.

10-23-11. Evening
4-does and 4 bucks. Nothing real big. Swirling winds.
-
Went out behind the house today in the blind its made out of old military camo net 3 small doe and 1 big doe showed up to eat some acorns 10 yards away sooo picked the spot got the draw on her released and followed through aaaand put it over her back. I truly think she hit the deck when she heard the string. She must have trained up on incomming... Damn tactical deer.
-
Finally had two does come in broadside at 10 yard at about 3:30 pm, would have liked to put one in the freezer,BUT my bow pull up rope was in my hand and my bow was on the other end still on the ground!!! :banghead: One minute more, just one minute.
-
0 deer and 1 trespasser. Could be the guy that stole my stands and groundblind. He was too far away and couldn't get a positive ID on him though.
-
The stand I hunted the other night had this cam soaking for a week by it. This pic was taken on the lease next to ours. Me and Ben are able to bowhunt this lease. He came through at 8:36pm. A little tooooooo late.

Sounds like a lot of Close calls. I love this stuff.
-
10/22
Saw a big pile of BBQ'd ribs, done by Dad the camp cook, converted in to a camp full of stuffed, drowsey bow hunters. Sure am glad he doesn't hunt because it might interfere with his cooking.
It was good to see my nephiew, the marine, who was able to get some leave and join us at camp.
10/23
Hunted with a buddy on his close-to-home spot. Saw a bruiser moving on through about 50 yards away. He was not fazed in the least by my grunt tube insults.
Had 2 does come into the red zone and managed to get a nice, clean shot off at the bigger one and she managed to duck and run out of there unharmed... getting closer.
Had a Blue Heron land in the ditch about 10 yards away.
-
10/25:
FAT little button buck walked right under my stand.
Couple minutes later, a spike walked behind me and up jumbed a nice doe from her bed. She came up past me but out of range and into the brush. Squirrels out gathering leaves and bark to insulate their nests---I guess a couple light frosts get s them worried about upcoming winter...

From today's journal...
25-Oct-11
Since I'm working nights this week (oncall) and since it was such a beautiful day, I hit the trails for a short still-hunt. Got a late start and an early finish but it was significantly better than nothing.
Entered the front way and worked south to the back entrance. I had planned to take the old horse trail along the eastern border but spotted a very fresh set of deer tracks leading up the new trail so off I went. Followed those for an hour and a half or so - never did see any deer.
Did get a shot at a squirrel. He had spotted me and was about twenty feet up a hickory tree. He stayed still - guess he thought I might not have noticed him. I moved around so the tree could provide a backstop for me, stopped and fired. It was a good shot - hit right where I was looking - but he saw it coming and bailed out. Man, they're fast.
-
10-25-2011... Hunted for six hours....saw a Blue Jay and 2 woodcock!
-
10-25-11 evening
Went to a new/old spot today. Took the climber in and did a quick scouting session. Found a tree with the wind right and hunted. Bad,bad set-up!!! Saw about 12 deer (2 small bucks)but they all came in behind me. :knothead: :banghead:
Good thing no big bucks were in the groups. I did learn what they were doing anyhow. Next time I'll be ready for em.
-
Went out to the blind kinda late today just about 1730 or so just had to get out to the woodline brought the climber as the wind was blowing in the wrong direction for the blind set up and around 1815-1830 one small doe came passing by. Will try again in the morning.
-
Went this morning and seen :( This time of the year is unpredictable.
-
Went to a new spot this afternoon; initially saw a very nice 4x4 whitetail; the area is extremely thick and should be some fun, especially when the rut starts.
-
Watched a BIG 4x4 tear up a russian olive tree this morning, across the fence from where I am hunting. Also watched my arrow fly over the back of a turkey; maybe I will pick a spot next time.
-
2 bucks and 15 does/fawns while sitting in the rain last night. This yougun chases a couple does into my decoy last night and didn't want anything to do w/ it...LOL. He came back twice, but wouldnt get in front of him...It was an awesome night!

Saw two does right at dark and on the drive out I watched a couple of young bucks sparring It was cute! No shots yet!
-
Just back from a 3 day trip. Tons of does and a good number of young bucks, Big ones are eluding me and have not started any chasing that I can see.
One ole long faced, roman nosed doe got a ride in the truck. For now she is just hanging out.
-
turkey everywhere
hope there around this weekend
might get a shot
-
i called in a little forkie that had a main beams that were nearly touching 8 inches above his head. He came within ten feet of me and then slowly walked a circle around me until he got down wind then busted for twenty yards and then just stopped. He walked a bit farther and then bedded down. Later a hawk that could have been a young black phase red tail or an off colored swainson, landed on a branch about 45 yards away. after about 10 minutes, it folded and went straight down with a thump and caught either a tree rat or a large vole and ate it. he flew up to a branch about twenty yards a cleaned his beak before leaving. Then a vole knocked over my second arrow that was leaning against my quiver. I thought I could hear something above me most of the evening. About 20 turkeys flew up to roosts about 10 after 6, but none gave me a shot and I could not approach them without spooking the flock. Next time I will be in a better position for them.
-
Lots of pine, ceader and fir trees. Two squirrels ,some birds and only six does.Lots of rocks and dirt. But still was fun.
-
Hi folks. I'm new here but thought I'd share my Oct. 16 hunt. I had walked into a small field bordering a gravel WMA road right after daylight. As I was standing in the open field edge listening and pondering on which way to still hunt, I saw a deer coming out of the trees. I was in the wide open so just froze. Turned out to be a spike. He stared me down for a few seconds then hopped back into the trees and stomped a bit before walking away. No spikes allowed there anyway. I gave him time to move on and eased into the woods a few yards. About 75 yards into the woods and standing next to a big tree looking around. Heard quite a commotion coming from behind me and peeked around the tree to see two does running towards me. They had either been jumped or were just in a hurry to get in cover after crossing the road. The lead doe was huge and coming directly at me. She slowed to a walk and saw me and froze about 5 steps away. The other doe was about 10 yards behind her. I figured I had to draw even though I knew that would probably cause them to bolt. Sure enough when I drew the lead doe took off fast but the second one hesitated for a moment, stepping one way then the other as if deciding which way to run. It wasn't a great angle but she was close and I had a good spot eyed. The shot was good. Entered a little high forward but angled down as she was quartering to me and coming slightly down hill. She ran across the draw and I could hear by her breathing it was a good lung hit. She piled up on the hillside within sight. Gotta love those recoveries. Even though she was the smaller of the two, she dressed out at 95 lbs. Good to have some meat in the freezer.
-
Oct. 28, Saw a Heron, a Duck, and a Grouse, still no deer.
-
10-28
3 doe a few chipys and some bluejays
took a fluflu and did some stumping
good day

Hunting for deer -- seeing coyotes.
Dang it.
-
The wind is blowing a solid 50 mph this morning. I decided to stay home and catch up on honey-do's. :(
-
Snow Snow and more Snow!!! oh and about a 400 lb. black bear.

A nice morning here, 35 degrees, overcast, and light wind until about 0930; now it is howling.
Watched a 4x4 tearing up some boxelders this morning. He was about 80 yards away. I did some rattling with no interest shown except by one little 3x3 who was curious. Turkeys are still around, too.
-
Beautiful 32 degree morning. Saw two squirrels and a skunk. Bumped three or four deer walking in right at daylight, but no activity near my stand today. Might try again this evening, but the wind has picked up to around 20-25 mph.

Today was a good morning out. I seen a fawn just after sun up. Mamma did not make an appearance, but some turkeys came in, and I am watch them about 30yrds out feeding and hopeing that one strays just a littler further so maybe I can get a shot off.
But before any get a chance to stray I catch movement out of the corner and I know it is a deer.
A buck a good buck not a great one but 8 maybe 9 points. I did not count them once I knew if given a chance to shoot him I would. He is about 18yrds behind me but moves to 10yrds facing my stand. He fakes eating and quick looks at the base of my tree. Then back at the turkeys. He turns broadside and puts his head down. I move my bow and dont get it half way into postion and he looks up at me. I freeze but he does not know what I am but does not like it, and turns and moves off they way he came.
Ok I will just sit and try not and shack out of the tree. He is out of sight the turkeys bust me and thy move off.
I am waiting don't want to leave to early, and an other smaller buck skirts just behind me never in range he looked to be a small 5 maybe an 8 point.
So after he exited stage left. I waited a few more minutes and was not long to leave myself. My son said he heard some but never seen them.
So todays tally 3 deer and about 8 turkeys.

In between hunts here in Washington. Late season starts in late November so I took a little bike ride along the Green River today. Fall colors are getting into full swing, it was a beautiful sunny day in the Pacific Northwest. River was up a bit from yesterdays big rain but a few brave souls where out casting lines for steelhead or salmon, not sure which is open now. Stopped in a local fresh produce stand and picked up some red spuds and a few ears of sweet corn for dinner. Got a nice red flush in my cheeks from that cool fall breeze, knocked a bit of rust off my between season legs .... just a great afternoon.

Four different species of dogs. Dang neighbors

2 Turks, 50 yards.
-
Was able to hunt for a couple hours this evening. Saw 3 buttons and 1 spike buck and was fortunate enough to harvest the spike.
-
so, tonight I went after the turkeys that I put to bed two nights ago. About 6 p.m. they were coming in, one offered me a shot, but as I drew it got behind two weed stalks, I held for just a bit and in that time the turkey bolted instantly into the thick stuff, so I held onto my shot.
-
A no wind 20 degree morning, very clear. I didn't see any deer until 0830, then it was a veritable parade. Had 4 does under 20 yards, and saw about 15 deer, but no bucks. Put the sneak on a flock of turkeys and got to within 10 yards, but they were on the wrong side of the fence and eventually wandered off. Too bad no big bucks doing any chasing yet, but a fun morning.
-
Right off at daylight I found the 5 big bull elk I got into last weekend. I swung way around about 3/4 mile to get the wind right. They were done feeding and on the move. I got in front of them to head them off. 50 yards was as close as I got. Had 2 of them broadside then, but I'm no Howard Hill, so no shot. Then they winded me.
I also saw many does and a few mulie bucks. One buck was big, 28" wide 3x3, and around 28" tall. Where was he when season was on? :banghead:
-
2 does, no shot
-
I seen this one today and figured I would take him home with me!!!!

fri night: nothin'
sat morn: two does, little one too small to shoot walked too close to me (five feet from tree!) and caught wind of me. I was waiting for the larger one to come in to shoot it, but it held back and turned tail with the little one.
Sat night: a doe that hung just out of range, and several deer that came in and ran past. they were moving pretty decent and were out of range. seemed like they were spooked.
sun morn: five does, one buck might've been an eight pointer. turned away way out of range, I was hoping they'd keep coming.
-
Nice job Red Tailed Hawk!
Tell us about your bow/arrow/b-head set-up. How about the story? :archer2:
-
Saw a small doe right at sunset heading out into a field. Passed on the shot. Heard a buck rubbing on trees after dark. Never saw the buck, but he made a heck of a racket. Stayed in the tree till he left and them I slipped away. Hope he is still around and offers me a shot!
-
Shedrock I posted story and few more pics on hill bug thread..
My set up is Hill bow "Tembo" 70" 50#@30. Full length Carbon express arrow with 175 grain Zwickey Delta upfront.
Made a nice quartering away shot from natural groundblind at 12 yards.
My first kill with a Hill bow.
-
I had a great weekend. Saw 6 deer on Friday morning, no shots. Three turkeys later that morning. I stalked to within 10 yards of a bearded hen, but just as I was about to shoot, they took off.
I hung a new stand Friday around noon and had a doe underneath it later that evening. She presented multiple shots, but I chose to wait for a bigger one. She was kinda small and it was early in the evening. She sniffed around (including the climbing sticks) within 20 yards of the stand for about 1/2 hour. Two smaller bucks watched her from about 60 yards away, but wouldn't come any closer. Also saw a coyote, but didn't get within range for a shot. Squirrels were everywhere. I shot at and missed one, but I swear he jumped the string. My arrow stuck in the ground exactly were he was.
Saturday morning was just about perfect weather wise. I saw 12 does from the new stand. A big mature doe stepped out in the field and as soon as I saw her I knew I'd take a shot if one presented itself. She never came within range. For only taking one missed shot at a squirrel, I still had a great couple of days in the woods.
-
Nutn but tree rats....
-
Its on fire right now had 160 class buck all night around me came real close to dropping the string a few times wrong angle every time see you tomorrow MR buck :archer2:

... but none of them close enough for a shot. Cool day.
-
OK
Im a little late but I will add that Ive seen chipmunks and squirrels
Verry little deer this year
0 shots so far.
-
Noticed a bunch of turkey buzzards in the woods, going from the ground to a tree & back. Figured they were feeding on something. Saw one actually chase a red tailed hawk away from their area. Watched them for about an hour before wandering down to see what they were eating, which was a doe carcass.
-
I saw 18 Deer on Saturday, passed a 5 yard shot of a doe with a fawn, then had an 8 yard shot at a button buck, got the tree he was standing behind.
Quite a bit of action, which is typical before gun season here.
-
As I watched a little buck eyeballing me from about 40 yards this morning, I heard "Putt, putt, putt," and looked uphill about 10 yards away, where a gobbler was doing his turkey thing; getting ready to leave the county. He went over a rise and I followed, only to watch him fly off. Saw about 10 does and another buck which was a mature 4x4. He had the thick neck and dark hocks of a buck looking for love; maybe the rut is near.
-
10/29/11
Got going late for the AM hunt, but got the boy set up on time. He heard some "stuff" moving around, but saw no deer. He saw a squirrel, but it moved out before he got a shot.
Since I was late, anyway, I stopped up at the house and had a cup of coffee with Dad before embarking on a still hunt down the brush hog paths.
Lots of birds out and beautiful colors, but no deer. Few scrapes and only 1 rub... they are late.
-
Had a great night again 6 bucks 4 does passed on 9pt 125 class and 8pt 130 class all of the bucks worked the scrape right in front of me what a great show.
-
I'm a couple of days late. Went out late afternoon on Saturday the 29th. I did not see any huntable quarry, but was treated to various birds. Cormorants, chickadees, crows, cardinals, buntings, etc... and one armadillo :) Had a great time!
-
Slept in til 6 this morning, but got into gear and went out in light snow and 30 degree cool. Probably saw 30 deer, and saw a young buck chasing some does. Saw 2 thick necked bucks that were obviously mature deer, but their racks weren't that great. They were with some does, but didn't seem rutty in their actions.
-
It was 76 degrees here today and I still saw a bruiser chasing a doe.
She was so hot she was mouth breathing with her tongue hanging out.
He sure wasn't letting her get out of his sight.
God bless,Mudd
-
Two skunks in my sons conibears. Good cover scent if someone wants, or to put under someones porch.
-
First time out this year. Driving around public land looking for a good place to get out to do some ground hunting I spotted a doe. Drove down a few hundred yards & stalked up to her. She fed into me & I had her within 5 yards for several minutes. Asat sure did its job on this one. I let her pass as she was on the smaller side but it was great anyways.
Next encounter was after a long slow walk into new territory in hopes of finding some action. After about 45 min of slow paused paces with the wind in my face the winds started shifting directions depending on the terrain. Heard some noise to the right of me on another finger of the valley and noticed a doe coming in at a steady trot, guess who followed, looked like a legal buck maybe a ten pt but he was within range for only a few seconds, when he showed no signs of stopping i did a doe bleat by mouth, he stopped and looked my way but proceeded to follow the doe. I did a super slow stalk in there direction which took some time but didnt catch up to them.
Found 2 scrapes on the way out. Not bad action for hunting from 11 to 3. Great day!
Not bad for huting from
-
Was windy no bunnies or squirrels. Played with two coyotes and they won. later played with another one and I won. Lots of noisy magpies and crows.
-
i went first after a pheasant. when I jumped it, I was so shocked that there actually was one I forgot to shoot at it. Later I saw a fawn sneaking around in some low cedar clumps. Then I ran into a cp shooter with his dog. I talked to him across the creek. I asked him if he was pheasant hunting or looking for a deer. He said looking for deer. Every time I see him he is looking for a deer. This time he said he hit the ten pointer. this was the same deer that I passed on twice before, first time it was too hot and opening week end, the second time we were going to head north because my daughter was about to have a baby. I thought he first said he hit it at 6a.m. because I said "why are you going after a gut shot deer this quick." I thought he had shot it near where we were at. Then he said "I started looking for it 1 o clock so it was almost 8 hours. And I shot it from my stand across the road." A half mile away. Apparently a girl heading for her tree stand jumped it heading out for her afternoon hunt, but she did not see which way it ran. Except that it was heading away. He put his tree stand right where my wife's permanent blind had been for a number of years prior to him taking over the spot. Tree stands equal no trespassing if you are a millionaire, I guess. I saw a doe and her fawns on the way to where I wanted to sit for the night. I left early and lost my judo point in a picked bean field, took my eye off of it to watch an owl fly by and could not find back what I had shot at. I know it is just laying there, somewhere.
-
Dont get on the puter much this time of year. Hunting is primetime!!!!!
Anyhow, saw several bucks the last couple days and passed on a couple good ones. But had one really good one (high 140's) come in on a string. Well when I grunted with my mouth to stop him he turned toward me. I held at full draw and waited until he turned broadside again. Well he FINALLY did but I was off my game by then. Shot right under the belly. Hindsight is 20/20 but I should have let the draw down and let him go. Good thing he wasn't touched.
Got payback last night for the miss on another yote!!! They just wont learn to stay away.hahah
The rut is here and I'll be at camp for a week. Good luck all and I'll post when I get back.
-
Yesterday sat all day (public land) and saw the same little buck I saw last week on Thursday. He was running goofy this time. I have only seen 13 deer this year and firearm opener is this weekend and I' m out until they are done. Leaves me the last three weeks of December. The only shot I could have taken was a button buck that must have been born late, smallest thing walking. It is what it is!
-
Yesterday my buddy came over and got busted by three does as we were headed to our spots... :(
He did some rattling and saw a small six poit that was on the wrong side of the fence. Later we were at another place. No deer but I got to see a pileated woodpecker fly by me and watch a hen turkey walking around. :)
-
This AM saw squirrels, woodpeckers, blue jays, two raccoons, six doe and four different buck. Two buck were not legal, the other two were. All the animals listed above are still out frolicking together. Heavy sigh......
-
My son and I seen nothing this morning while hunting. However, on our commute home we seen a huge buck walking through some tall grass. With out a doubt, the biggest deer either of us have ever seen except on TV. Unfortunatly, the land he was on is private land owned by a large company. Maybe if we are lucky we will see something half his size tonight.
-
A.M. 7 large does 3 yearling does 2 button bucks 1 spike and a small 7. overall good but to windy so not much movement
-
Yesterday, I watched two bucks fighting; one was a pretty good 4x4. I tried to grunt one in, but they were too busy with each other, although they paid attention to the grunt.
This morning, I went to the same area and rattled, but got no takers. I'm putting in plenty of time in the woods, hopefully the plan will come together before the season ends. Got close to some turkeys this morning, but could not get a clear shot before they busted me.
-
40 minutes ago climbing into my tree stand, half way up and a nice fat doe walks by, doooooh!!!!
-
2011-11-04
Went out to Quantico today just to see how it was to hunt there. A friend of mine has hunted it exstensivly but hunts from a tree stand.
Saw two does that busted me at about 80yards. They winded me from a long distance. The path I was on is a decline that opens up into a huge draw.
Once the wind started whipping that ended my day.
Great place to hunt but Im not too crazy about reserving spots to go hunt.
But it is loaded with deer. Loads of tracks!!!!
-
Hunted 3 hours this evening. No deer seen but was over run with squirrels.
-
Just got in from watching a 4x4 chasing does for about an hour. He had about 15 to choose from. It was fun watching him.
-
I saw a dog with one rear leg that stuck straight back, and I saw that the arrogant rich guy, that thinks he owns every thing and cannot stand to share the land with anyone else, did not find the ten pointer he hit in the dark, because he was out hunting again tonight.
-
A bunch of disgruntled workers that wished they could be hunting. O well got to pay the bills.
-
Well with a consistent south wind it should have been good. (if they would have slowed a bit-30 mph gusting to 45 is a bit much.)
Deer were hard to find and those I did see were very spooky.
I did see one 120ish buck cruising the bottoms, also saw a big bob cat going in, in the morning, and about 47 raccoons on an ensilage pile while leaving in the dark.
This year may make me a believer in the moon phase thing as any rut activity is hard to come by.
-
Saw something last night that was definitely a first for me.
I took the grand daughter on a youth hunt, and although we had opportunities, things just didn't work out.
As we left the farm I jokingly referred to all the big bucks we would see driving home..
As I crested the first hill, my headlights picked up an animal setting on his haunches on the shoulder of the road, much as a dog or coyote would do. That is what my first thoughts were, coyote.. As I approached it turned out to be a young fork horned buck. He rose and walked across the road in front of me.
I stopped and let him walk, he went to the fence but would not cross it. He then returned to the road in front of me and started running ahead of me much as a stray calf would do.
He finally went back in the ditch he originally came from and I went on by.
There was no evidence of injury, but something certainly wasn't right with that boy.
Have you ever seen a deer set on his butt like a dog??

I went looking for a cow elk this morning and saw bulls only, 57 of them spread out in groups of 7-15. Bull season opens back up Dec 1st and I'll be there!
I did some bunny hunting, saw 3, shot one for the pot. Found 3 sets of bobcat tracks, and one fresh set of lion tracks. Houndsman should be here in the morning, and we'll try a run at it.
I also saw several nice mulie bucks sniffin' does.

This guy has been hanging around my block for the last week. He come down out of the hills into town tending to the "city" does. Where was he during season?

I know this is an old thread, but boy, did I have an occurrence yesterday,
I was sighting my granddaughter's slug gun in for late doe season. After taking a couple of shots I walked up to check my target. About the time I turned and started heading back to the truck, I hear a deer snort across the creek..
I thought that a bit strange with all the noise I was making, but went on.. Then I hear grunting, and more snorting. Soon I see deer running all over the place.
Long story short, there were at least seven bucks chasing around. The biggest a 140ish, then a couple of 120's and the rest were smaller.
This was not friendly chasing as the big guy was intent on killing one of them, and I don't think he cared which one. This went on for at least three passes of them coming close, then leaving and returning..
To the best of my reasoning, I am guessing the big guy had a doe squirreled away, and the smaller bucks were trying to run her off..
I will say too, the temptation or thought was there.. Me standing there with a slug gun and all of this going on, but I quickly dismissed the thought and enjoyed the moment.
I got back to the truck and looked at the clock.. 1:10 PM Basically high noon, Dec 10, (second rut). Another vote for all day sets if you are up to it.

I was walking in before daylight three days ago and my headlamp caught something glowing about 10yds from me. I took a better look and it was the biggest racked buck I've ever seen in the woods while hunting. I've only seen one buck with bigger rack and that was from truck. This buck 3 days ago was bedded down about 300yds from my house along the edge of a creek. He had to have been in the 160"'s or 170"'s. Real wide, lots of mass and real long points. Typical 8 or 10 or so with main beams curving back towards each other.
Only deer I saw from my stand that morning I saw about 10mins. after I got down and was walking off. Bout 5 does walked right under the tree I was hunting in.

I was out last Sat and Sun (10th & 11th) mornings and saw a young doe and a giant tom. Sunday was the coldest hunt of the year so far at 16 degrees. No wind, so it was a pleasant morning to be out in the woods.

We had a freak snow storm back in October. Dumped a a bunch of heavy wet snow in a short period of time. Many trees went down that day.
Found this one and thought it was kinda neat.
