Take a look at the video of Billy's hunt.
After years of practice and study Billy Jr. passed Connecticut's bowhunting safety course on April 3rd of this year at 11 1/2 years old. On August 27th he turned 12 and was eligible to purchase deer and turkey tags with his bowhunting certificate. On Saturday, September 24th, at 5:00 PM, Billy climbed into a tree stand to hunt whitetails for the first time. One hour later, he sent his very first arrow at a big game animal from a tree stand and made a perfect shot. I'm sure Billy will look back at this hunt someday and see it as "one" of his bowhunting career highlights. None of us will ever forget our first animal. I was there, over his shoulder, with the camera rolling, of course. And for me, this is "the" hunting highlight of my life. I finally realized life coming full circle.

We have been very busy this past week, with 4 kids playing on 6 different soccer teams. So this is the first time I've had to post some pics and tell a brief account of the hunt. Billy's gone to bed now but I hope tomorrow he can come on and tell the story of his hunt...

Thanks Guys!!
I had a hard time keeping it together after the shot, tracking and at the recovery-WHAT A FLOOD OF EMOTIONS-proud,thankful,blessed...
Billys hunt and kill seems very quick by bowhunting standards, as we all know. However the kid has spent about 10 of his 12 years preparing for this moment. He was 2yrs old when he first started shooting a bent stick. And has spent countless hours with me in the woods and on the range. The hunting gods just smiled on him straight away!
Fantastic!
Such a perfect hit, your young man worked very hard and it certainly shows in the results. He has every right to bask a little in his success. Somehow, I don't believe it will go to his head.
Congratulations, and thanks for setting such a good example for the rest of us, Billy.

Thanks for making Billy and myself feel so good about it, we are thankful to be able to share it with all of you. Right now I am in a blind with my 8 yr old son Ben,the trophy frog hunter. We got in late and 3 deer were already near the blind and we spooked them, but there is still some time left.
When we get home I will have Billy type you the story, he is working on a boat load of home work right now.
Very Nice Bill, I got the text not too long after his feat!! Congrats to both father and son!! Shawn
Way to go guys! I'd love to hear your story when you're done with your homework.
CONGRATS!!! :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
Now not only father and son, but brothers... of the bow.
 :notworthy: and many more to come!
Ok guys I am done with my homework, this is the story of my first deer.
My Dad and I had set the stand 2 weeks before the season which started on September 15th. We didn't get to hunt until the 24th because of school and soccer. We snuck into the food plot and checked the trail camera. It had 32 pictures. A few of them were of the spike horn that I shot. Then we climbed up into the stand and got set up. We practiced what we would do if a deer came, and then we waited. About 20 minutes later Daddy says, "There's a deer." So, I slowly put my DS (a hand-held video game) away. Daddy doesn't believe they belong in the woods, but he gave me a "pass" on the first night. Daddy had actually heard the deer sneeze as it came into the field. I grabbed my bow and stood up. I ended up standing for 40 minutes, waiting for the deer to give me a shot, while mosquitoes were bombarding me. Finally the deer gave me a shot and I didn't miss the chance to shoot. The deer was at about 15 yards when I shot. After I shot I got all excited and started jumping around in my stand. I asked to call Mommy, and I did. After I talked to Mommy we got out of the stand and went to check for blood. There wasn't any blood until we got to the tree line but we could see the run marks. When we got to the tree line there was a spot of blood on a downed tree. Then we tracked it down farther into the woods and onto an old logging road. And that's where I saw a bit of tan and white sticking out of the grass even before Daddy did. Then I said to Daddy, "I think that's my deer over there." I put an arrow on the string and snuck up to it. The deer was finished. I had made a good shot. I picked the deer up by its antlers and we took a few pictures and called some of my cousins and my Popa. Then Daddy gutted the deer and we dragged it out of the woods to the truck. We drove back home and showed Mommy and my brothers and sister my buck and took more pictures. Then we drove down to the yard, a place my uncle owns where we meet after our hunts. We took more pictures, then weighed the deer, 80.3 lbs dressed, then we skinned it. Finally we quartered it and took it home and put it in the cooler. The next day I had backstraps fried with bacon, onions, and peppers. It tasted wonderful. I was glad my Daddy was there with me. :archer: :archer2:
I am smiling like I was there! Congrats on a fine hunt and a job well done.

Good job telling the story, Billy. You brought a smile to my face, and joy to my heart!
Be sure you print off this thread and file it in a notebook after it has run its course. Someday, years down the road when you are needing a little encouragement, this memory may mean a LOT.
Congratulations, and well done!
Thanks again folks!!
To answer a few of your questions:
Yes Kip, Billy's playoff game is why I left Bear quest early this year. After going undefeated all year they lost in the final game and finished second to a team they had beat everytime in the regular season, it was a good lesson for our boy's.
For the guy from Mass., we live in the north west corner of CT.
Billy shot a 40lb longbow built by Big Ed from PA.(Thanks again Ed) His draw is at 22" and believe it or not the best arrow combo as far as flight and accuracy was a 2216, 29" long with a 250gr woodsman up front, approx. 670gr. The arrow went through the back of the right shoulder and broke the leg on the opposite side! When I get the youtube clip of His hunt up you will be able to see what I am telling you. I was very impressed with the bow and arrow performance to say the least. And would go so far as to say it would be hard to believe if I had not seen it with my own eye's. Our veteran bowhunting friends and family could not believe what they were seeing as well.
Lesson BIG HEAVY ARROW WITH LOTS OF WEIGHT UP FRONT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Way to go Billy!!! congrats.
Congratulations again Billy and thanks for sharing that was afun read! :campfire:
Congrats Billy and Bill!!! As has been said, "THAT'S what it's really all about!!!

Good deal Billy! Great shot!
:clapper: Grats!
Fantastic . What a shot.
Can't say enough about that. Congrats to Billy and his dad on a job well done. I'd say, that 40# longbow was plenty. A sharp broadhead on a well placed arrow will flat put'um down. Now that was exciting.
I think Billy said it best "YES! YES! YES! YES!"
Excellent shot young man! :clapper: :clapper:
Bill
WAY COOL !!!...congrates to both of ya...

There is nothing like the genuine joy in a kids smile!

Billy, you are one cool dude! I don't think anything gets you out of focus! Second time you've put the first arrow where it counts. First a gator and now a whitetail buck! Those Alaskan brown bears better look out!!

Slowbowke
I don't think it gets any better than that! Congrats to the both of you. My most memorable hunts have been shared with my father. That one will outshine just about all the future ones. The first is VERY SPECIAL.
Thanks for Sharing!
oops, puter probs

awesome deer!
Again, Congrats. The video is awesome. Amazing what a light poundage bow can do when set up properly with an arrow. Good Job little Billy!
Now we'll all be waiting for an update about Ben :campfire:
Bill, is Ben allowed to hunt as a mentor or does he have to wait to be 12? Here in PA it used to be 12. Now they started a mentor program a few years ago and kids younger than 12 can hunt and shoot game with the proper supervision.
Congrats on a nice buck. Awesome video
QuoteOriginally posted by Tajue17:

It was mentioned in the video as 40#
Bill that is AWESOME!! I love the victory dance! Great shot young man!!
Thanks again Guys!
Ted, the bow is 40lbs and the arrow was a 2216 29" long with a 250 grain woodsman up front, seems alot for that bow but just look at the arrow flight in slow motion. Excellent flight and accurate.
Brad, Ben has to wait until he is 12 in order to hunt deer and turkey in CT. He can take the course when he is 11 and if he passes, get his cetificate, but can't buy the tags or hunt till age 12. He will only be 9 this December and can not believe he has to wait 3 more years. Honestly we all think Ben is more into hunting than the 2 of us, our family and friends agree, he is a "NATURAL" when it comes to shooting hunting fishing and anything outdoors.
That is unbelievably cool! Time for you old timers to put down the bow and keep the cameras rolling. Billy is the MAN!
:biglaugh:
Awesome job, great video and the best part is the "I love you too, Dad" at the end!
Fantastic, congratulations to both of you.
Wow!! That was one of the best hunting videos I've ever seen. Really brought a smile to my face.
WAY TO GO BILLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love reading all the first deer posts but nothing better than when a youth gets thier first and with dad right there, a great big congratulations to both of you   :clapper:
Congratulations !!!!
oops
wow that does seem heavy but man it worked and I'm sure he spent some time with that set up too so all good.
Bill now he needs his own freezer!
super bravo Billy langer JR !
I Bill Sr don't matter i juts put the you tube link of this fantastic father and son adventure on our French trad website !
Cool!
it's cool from you to share this with us Bill !
we can see you 're a true pro of video keeping your self control during this moment ...
if my son was doing the same i probably get a Joy -collapse issue and fall down from the tree !!!!
Besides this wonderful accomplishment and the shared excitement by all, I was still interested in one aspect of the specs.
Was the bow actually 40#'s at his 22" draw?
Many of the kids I have worked with could not dream of managing this wt. I do realize that Billy's work ethic would make this easily plausable.
I think he's due for a name change...."Bad Billy" Langer! Cause that was pretty badass! Way to go fellas!
Either the old timers put the bows down and film OR those old timers are gonna have some new camera boys to film them. :biglaugh:
or at least (as which happened in my case) the old timers wont have to drag any more deer once those young guys get stronger.
I don't remember the last time my Dad has drug or field dressed a deer, BUT it's always been a pleasure for me to do it. :)
Congratulations Billy!!!!
Abe
Congrats Billy. That was the coolest video I've ever seen. Good job both of you. Thanks for sharing it.
Thanks for taking me along on your incredible hunt. Congrats, well done. Heck of shot to by the way :)
I had a huge grin on my face the entire video!!!
To quote Bill in the video..."unbelievable"
Billy's composure was awesome and the shot was absolutly perfect!
Well done, and thanks for the video, I enjoyed every second!
 :notworthy: :clapper:
Great shot Billy. You've got nerves of steel I'd say. Great that you and your dad could share this moment. You'll NEVER forget it. Keep up the practice. More clean kills in your future.
Holy moly!!!!!! I just saw the video and its simply awesome. Congratulations to you all again. Billy, I dont know how you did it but you kept your cool better than I could have. That pops of yours is alright huh?
Congratulations Billy! That video made my day!
I've watched this vid Like 4 times Now! Seriously Awesome, What a moment for you both! Thanks so much for Sharing. And what A shot! That was the 12 ring for sure!
LOVE IT!!
What a shot Billy!! :archer2:
Thanks again Guys!
Scott, Billy is drawing 35 lbs at 22". He is very strong for his age and build and again the fact that he has been shooting some kind of bow since age 2 makes all the difference. Not to mention he mows our lawn with a push mower and handles every piece of the 10 cord of wood we burn every year, which has him in good condition!
Alrighty...I gotta admit that I welled up pretty good watchin' that! What an incredible experience between father and son to have on film. Very inspiring! Congrats and Thank-you!....Ryan
Thanks much Bill!
Since I am fortunate, at times, to work with both young and aspiring trad hunters, it is nice to have factual knowledge in order to possibly establish some base line. This specific information is not plentiful nor readily available.
Congrats Billy!!!!
Hey folks
Ben and I got a doe on tape last night. Man was he excited!
I`ve been unable to check Tradgang for a while, and I HAVE MISSED SO MUCH!!!
Congrats to the Langer family and especially Bill Jr.
We all know the effort and dedication something like this requires...indeed, it is a family thing!
Bowhunting at it`s VERY BEST!!!
Hey "big" Bill...ain`t "full circle" GREAT!!! :campfire:
Many, many, many happy returns for Bill Jr.
Bowhunting at it`s VERY BEST!!! :campfire:
That was FANTABULOUS! Great composure, incredible shot, well filmed. One of the best video clips I have seen in a long time. Made me want to stand up and cheer. Two thumbs way up! The offer still stands for the use of my dog for some pheas in flite. That would be another awesome accomplishment for your young toxopholist.
Just now seeing this. What a perfect shot! Good work, men.
Still simply amazed - Billy!
And you harvested him with a 3 blade - just awesome!!
I just finished watching the video and was blown away by what I saw. Congratulations to both father and son, what an awesome experience for both of you to share together that I'm sure words cant describe. For a father and son to spend just a day together in Gods great creation is wonderful but to have it turn out like this is beyond comprehension, than you for letting us share the moment with you.

Great Shot!!! :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
Just watched the video. I have seen probably thousands of hunts on video and that right there was hands down my all time favorite. Unreal congrats again to you both. Great shootin' son and I have a feeling those CT whitetails are in trouble for the next 50 years.
I`m another who just went back and watched the video...I wonder how many times it has been replayed in the Langer house :bigsmyl:
I truely believe there are times when a hunter is given some help from a power much greater than ourselves. There is NO substitute for hard work on the hunters` part, and good luck can shine upon a hunter...but SOMETIMES it is more than good hard work and good luck. Sometimes there is a gift, and sometimes the gift includes more people than just the successful hunter.
Thanks to the Langer family for including all of us in your memory.
Great job Billy Langer...an absolutely PERFECT shot. If that was ME in that treestand...waiting for a shot for THAT length of time, I probably would have melted down and flubbed the shot!

We really appreciate you sharing the experience with us and happy to hear that all of you enjoyed the video.
I was only able to upload 10 minutes of the hunt to youtube and in fact had to edit out some really special footage of Billy and I talking about the hunt behind his deer, I will be sure to include it in our next dvd.
Thanks again, you have all made Billy feel really good about his first deer and appreciate this special hunt even more. I hope all of you experience a hunt like this with a loved one SOON !
