Hey guys, I was just wondering if many of you guys take a book with you while on stand or in your blind? I usually don't when I go out for a morning or an evening hunt but if I'm going to sit all day I almost always do. Just curious to see how many of you guys do the same. TRW
I usually see animals when I'm just waking up from a nap after having fallen asleep while reading. :D
I can't see how you could get away with it... I mean, the pages ar big white flags! I do tinker with my iPhone occasionally but its small, black & I don't need to turn pages.
I often read the Bible while on stand.
I always have one in my pack, but I rarely take it out. Wildlife of any sort fascinates me, so if there's a critter afoot, I'm watching it. When I do read, I'm always concerned about missing something, so I can't concentrate on the text anyway.

One of the many reasons why I got the bible for my Droid.
I do. A buddy of mine takes one and everytime he gets that itch to call it a day and get down he opens his book and says "10 more mintues". Once he gets into the book 30 or 40 minutes usually pass and he settles down till he gets the urge to get down again. His way of staying on stand longer.
I sometimes do if I am in my Double bull ground blind. I would rather stay focused and safe in my tree stand.
Wow! So much to see and hear - I feel I might miss a bit of Ma nature!
Always, except I'm more of a magazine reader.
very often ....
Nope, I save the reading for the bathroom...
No , just appreciate tne nature.
Just started. I had been reading stuff on my phone, but depending on the lighting I would have a harder time quickly adjusting my eyes from the lcd screen to the woods around me if I heard something. I don't seem to have that problem with a book. I also look up before turning every page, something I didn't do with the iphone. I feel like I pay better attention as a result.
Plus there always seemed something wrong to me with being out in the woods with a traditional bow and reading/playing with a very modern electronic device.
I read often on the stand and use a Kindle. It does not give of a glare from the lcd screen and put it down when it is prime time. i read a page look over the area and repeat. no page turning and works pretty well when it is cold out.
I've tried but I'm afraid I'll miss something.
I keep a couple of books on my phone for that purpose. usually for the middle of the day when not much is moving.
Not any more! I missed an opportunity on a nice deer because I was absorbed in the book and missed her slipping through. Now, I just hunt!
I used to carry a small paperback, but turning pages is too much movement. I play with my iphone a bit, if things are slow. its smaller and easier to do without movements. But mostly, I watch for critters.
Have been for years, usually classic light mystery paperbacks. I "fidget" less and sit quieter longer when I read. Read two pages, look around the woods, turn page slowly. I see more deer as I sit/stand alot less..............YMMV
Always. Now I use either my iphone or an old Palm TX I keep around for the purpose. I can turn the backlighting on either way, way down to avoid lighting up my face, and both are small enough to slip easily into a pocket when deer sneak up on me with my head down!
There are several very good ebook apps for the iphone. If you are already carrying it...
Last year I read my nursing textbook while in the blind.
Typically I will read my Bible or something by John Elderidge
WOW! "Pages are too white" and "Turning a page is too much movement"???
I carry a paperback to my treestands all the time. I read the two visible pages, look around carefully, then turn a page and read the next two sides before repeating the process.
Like anything else related to ambushing a deer, one has to be practical, but some of the scenarios envisioned here are just too far out. I wonder if some of the posters have ever even been on a stand before.
Joe
I don't read if I'm hunting deer from a tree stand or natural ground blind. However, when turkey hunting out of pop-up blind, I always carry a paperback Western. Read two pages, look around, quietly turn the page and continue.

same here. i had a small paperbook and had a plan to slip it in my cargo pocket of my pants if i saw anything, well along comes a doe and i cant get the dang book in my pocket.. fumbled around and missed a good chance.. i dont read any more, maybe if in a blind or something but not in a stand..
I've thought about it, but I think I drag too much crap with me as it is so I haven't yet. I have an android phone now though, so I may be tempted since I'll have that with me anyway. My only concern is how long the battery will hold out.
That depends on how bright you set the backlight. The reader app uses next to nothing, it's all about how bright you make that big lcd.
I can read on my iPhone at half brightness for many more hours than I can sit in a treestand.
The biggest problem is that hunting and archery texts are fairly rare in electronic format. You can get some of the classics, but it doesn't seem to have occured to modern authors to produce anything other than standard print.
I have a smart phone and have alot of good reading on it including the bible. Works out great just gotta use during daylight don't try it before or you'll get busted for sure
I used to haul books with me a lot when I was in college.
Multi Tasking. Not anymore though, when I'm Hunting I'm Hunting!,
I wait all week to hunt, why on earth would I want to do smething else, when I have waited 5 days to do what I am doing?
It would be like waiting all year to go on Vacation, then spending the whole time in a hotel room, watching TV.
Cyclic Rivers has a great point! However I am still in the college stage so I am all about the multi-tasking right now. unfortunately I usually get so involved watching something that the book never gets read and I end up staying up all night catching up...
Take my Bible that my son gave me when he was in the Marine Corps. Its small and camoflaged. I start every hunt off with it right at first light.
I prefer to bring a Playboy magazine to the stand in that the articles are great and when you get really bored you can look at the pictures. Good stuff. Can't beat Ms. November in the rut. Shoot straight.
There's enough time in my life when I can (or have to) have my eyes on a screen on paper, so I never read while hunting. I carry my cell phone, but turn it off until I'm out of the woods.
I do it a lot.
It keeps me still and on stand a lot longer. I think it makes me more effective cause I don't have the tendency to fidget. I also read a page or 2 and look around.
Also when you knock a paperback off your tree stand seat getting up to get ready for a shot the deer usually stop and look for the noise, then they are standing still for a shot.
I read on stand all the time! Generally during slow periods or as incentive to give it "just a bit longer". Mostly paperbacks but reading "Hunting with the Bow and Arrow" by Saxton Pope on my IPhone this year! (Don't tell anyone but I sometimes play "Angry Birds" too  )
That I know of, reading has only cost me one deer...a good buck! Caught movement just above my book page once in a treestand and looked up to see a nice buck passing by at 20 yards. Midday and breezy...guess I missed hearing him :(
I do, it keeps me still. I don't read the first 2 hours in the mornig or the last hour or so at night. It is getting more difficult as I age. I don't wear glasses when I shoot my bow but it is getting harder to read without glasses.I can stash my book quickly in my coat when a deer comes but can't get my glasses off without being seen.
I just hunt. Don't remember ever having the urge to bring along anything else to do.
kindle
I use my phone and play SUDOKO.
Nope. But I do a lot of bird watching
If I am planning to be in my stand all day I take something to read. I used to take a book but this year I have a nook color. Have only taken it with me once but I like it much better than a book. Quieter, less movement. Currently reading "Hunting with Bow and Arrow" for Kindle. I hacked my nook so I could install other reader software so I can actually run the Kindle software on my nook and "Hunting with Bow and Arrow was a freebie from Amazon! I like free!
I do, and I have a an electronic card game. Only problem is, as I am getting older, my eyes will focus on reading distance, then not change to deer distance for a LONG time. That is a problem.
ChuckC
I didn't have much luck reading the news paper while on stand. Deer must be able smell the ink they use. :D
Rob
Never, I can read when I'm not hunting. I'm constantly listening and watching. Woods are full of entertainment. Might miss something.
It's always important that I have some sort of paper with me when I'm in the woods. I either read it or,....use if for other stuff.
Yep I take a book, bottle of water and some food.
Currently reading China Marine, only problem is I forget to look for the deer and often there right in front of me by the time I realize.
But hey just being out there is the best part of hunting.
I just sit there cursing at all of the squirrels making noise and making me look them when they get crazy and make a lot of rustling noises.
I have thought about taking an MP3 player though and listening to podcasts and just hunt with my sight. haven't done it yet though.
Will often take literature but am usually too wired to read unless it is an all day sit.
I read a book in the stand quite often.Keeps me from fidgeting.
I am easily amused and never get bored in the woods. the birds and small critters are all the entertainment I need. Once, while hunting the edge of a cornfield I spent several hours watching a hawk hunt mice from a nearby fencepost. Squirells can be annoying at times but if I sit dead dog still and dead dog quiet they soon forget im there. I also use time on the stand to talk to God. Its alot easier with no phones, TV or other noise to ditract.
If I wanted to read in the woods, I would do it in the summer.
I read alot on stand. My wife bought me a bible that has a camo cover. I also take my Kindle with me. It's a nice gray color so it blends in nicely.
I tend to hunt almost as much with my ears as I do my eyes. But I'll tell you, there has been a time or two where I've glanced up and had deer coming in on me.......I love the OH-NO feeling! When that happens I sit back and enjoy the deer being around and if I can move to get my bow that's great, if not, I just enjoy watching!
I go to the woods to hunt. I go to the library to read.

Libraries still exist? Weird.
To each his own; for me nature is a pleasure to enjoy by itself.
I've had several squirrel step children over the yrs. and have picked up a few words in squirrel. So when things get real slow I can always amuse myself with the locals...if they are sociable. Some groups just don't want to be amused or anybody in their neiborhood and don't mind letting you know about.

I have read through a lot of books while in my stand.
I do often, at the end of each page I'll stop and look every where then turn the page. Shot a 5X5 bull elk while reading "Silence of the lambs" one big scary bugga.

Reader here too. Read a page, scan, read a page, scan. I put the book away during prime time though.
I only do if I am sitting all day, if your stands have good cover it is fairly easy to get away with. I have very few stands that I could not read in and not get away with it and the stands that I couldn't I would only sit a short time as I have a tendency to move too much after a long sit. Shawn
The only thing I read when hunting is what is going on around me! Tried to bring a book once and fell asleep, seems everytime I try to read a book these days I fall asleep!!! Must be a aging thing!!!! :dunno:
Gonna use a kindle this year
No pages to turn
I do sometimes on long sits later in the year. I also do while antelope hunting as it is often a dark to dark sit, which at that time of the year is 14 hours. Books can keep me on stand longer and I figure I have a better chance at game when I'm in the stand vs. in camp. I have read a lot of Louis LaMour novels on stand over the years. Chad
I take a Bible with me to read when I'm in my ground blind.
