Title: broadhead blade profile..longer/shorter ?
Post by: maxfit on September 25, 2011, 05:48:00 PM
Lets say all things being equal..quality,steel sharpness , flight characteristics grains and cutting diameter etc.. is there any difference in a shorter  blade like a Montec  vs  a longer Woodsman..or a shorter Slick trick vs a longer Steelforce..man i must be bored today....

Think about it for a minute.

I'll go with the longer blade everytime.

mechanical advantage says the longer head has to work less to penetrate.

I'll play devil's advocate...

the shorter head will likely fly true more consistently than the longer ones. Less suseptible to form flaws etc..

I still choose to shoot woodsmens...

I've had less trouble tuning long heads than short ones.

.....I like the blood trails of wider heads myself.....dont have any tuning or penatration problems either............

The longer the blade, the longer the blade stays in contact with what its trying to cut, the more likely the object will be cut.

Shot placement makes way more difference than blade length. Make them sharp and put them in the right place and the critter won't know the difference.

I have a had two occurrences where a wide and short broadhead dodged off line with a strong quartering tail wind.  I have never had that with a Grizzly, Hill style, or Schulz head. Barring all variables in environmental conditions, things still can happen when the guarantees of the perfect shot are foiled. When that happens, I feel penetration is more important than a wider entry wound.

I look at it like this if you were going to stab something to kill it would a longer blade work better than a shorter one? And being from NY you should know that all things are never equal!

on the other hand, if both are sharp, and both go clean thru the critter. . . does it really matter ?

I guess more angels can dance on the edge of the longer head.  Does that help ?

Penetration and strength.  Balance is the key.

The longer head has the better mechanical advantage according to Dr. Ashby, lots of info on this, I believe it and it has worked for me.
