You now how it goes after shooting a critter like that. Interviews, sorting out product endorsements, reschedule your whole calendar for the next couple years for trade shows and speaking engagements.......
Beautiful bull Brian.
Brian,
what did you shoot him with? Maybe you can start the story there.
I heard a rumor that he has been carrying that blow-up elk-doll in his quiver for years. Had to use it before it got brittle and cracked. ;)
He should have made up his story in camp. If I ever killed anything, that's what I would do.
Killdeer :biglaugh:
stopped to see Brian this afternoon, he is a little busy trying to get things in order, but eventually he will get his story going. I heard it already so i am good :)
Congrats on a fine bull!
Rafael, If you dont have anything nice to say.... LOL.
CONGRATULATIONS!!
Charlie, one thing i can give you is........ he killed it with a Big River bow! Go Figure. LOL
Yeah I knew that already LOL, I saw it in the pictures, I was just pulling for more info. :readit:
Ok, so I suck at writing stories. It does take a little time butchering an elk by yourself :banghead: I had to flesh the hide, take it in for tanning & take in my head to be beetle cleaned for a euro mount. Busy, busy.
This elk hunt actually started 10 years ago when I met Scott (Hornhunter) on the bowsite when we traded some archery stuff. We have since grown into great friends, he is one of my best buds ever. He invited me to hunt in a spot in CO that year where he was goat hunting and I took him up on it. Of course he shot a nice goat that year.
That was a great decision on my part, it literally started a quest for an elk on public land that has taken my on one hell of a journey.
I have gone out there every year since.
Let me tell you about Scott. I have never met a anyone quite like him. First off, he is the toughest sob I have ever known. He NEVER complains about anything that hunting or the mountains throws at him. He has no quit. He has shot so many critters on the last hour of the last day of a long hunt, I figured that had to rub of on me sooner or later.
He knows hunting western critters & those mountains like you can not believe. His ability to read maps, navigate & figure elk out is uncanny. I have learned so much from him, he is the reason I killed this elk & have had numerous opportunities in the past. Cool stuff.
Him & his wife Janet have treated me like family and I am so grateful. Thanks, you guys are the best.
Scott & i started up to camp on the 12th of September. We backpacked into our spot on a nice day. We saw a few elk Monday evening( two monster bulls) & Tuesday we got into a few bulls. No shot opportunities were had. Wednesday brought fog so bad you could not see more than a few feet. Bad for navigating & seeing elk for sure.
Then came the rains or should I say monsoons. All afternoon, all night, next morning etc. We got soaked & decided to pack out & hunt some of the lower country. That proved to be a wise choice.

WOW...good stuff Brian....Congrats brother!
Scott & I dry out Thursday & Friday morning, and decide to check out a few areas he knows usually have some elk. We hang a treestand in one area I had an encounter with a big bull a few years back. After hanging, we sit & listen for a while. At around 1:30 some bulls bugle below, the stage is set for tomorrow am. I decide it`s time for an all day sit (nice break from walking my keister off). Some random pics around my stand.

Awesome pics and story so far keep it coming! Hey is that a beer gut i see from the side in that one pic!?! was going to say you can blame it on Thurs night shooting and drinking leagues at the Archery club. Can't blame mine on that, had it long before i met you! LOL :bigsmyl:
Good stuff Brian, Cant wait to get home to see your pictures.
No beer gut dude, thems binos under my shirt, really!! That profile pic is a bit oompa-loompa-ish looking though! :nono:
loving this thread, cant wait to read more!
Guys, It took Brian many years to accomplish this goal. I think he's still savoring it... OK Brian, let's get on with it!
Great job Brian,
A bull on public land is a true accomplishment and it looks like you done well. :clapper: :clapper:
A great story so far.

Here is where Paints His Shirt Red rides up and tells me what a bad fisherman I am.
You tell a good story!

Out to the stand Saturday before light, sit until noon, break for lunch with a little walk. Back in for the afternoon. No elk sighted or heard. I could not believe with all the sign an elk would not show if I sat all day. Oh well, nice day anyway.
On the drive back I think I got a little deflated, & I think Scott could sense it.
We decided to take a little break, do some sheep scouting with the family( Scott has a coveted bighorn tag in all this, but he is trying to break my elk jinx so he doesnt have to listen to me whine anymore :)
Nice to see some neat new country & scout for sheep. We have a great time on the mountain with Janet, Owen & labdog Matty.

Dont look down
I decided to try a new spot Sunday evening. Scott & i did a little poking around , he has killed elk in there before & it looked promising to me. A large area logged off a few years ago. Some think the clearcutting is ugly, but I cut my teeth on hunting cuts for deer, this "ugly" stuff was right up my ally.
Sunday evenings really seem to quiet down in the mountains, all the day hikers & such are back in the city. This day was no exception. I could feel something was going to happen that night, sometimes you just get a feeling, ya know?
An hour before dark I decided to try a bugle, something we dont normally do. There is just too much human activity, but I felt I needed to stir things up.
I let a bugle rip & get an answer instantly. Alright! One more answer by me back & he bugles a lot closer, here he comes. Now I am getting excited. I can see an awesome rack coming up my ridge.
:bigsmyl:
Oh Man....
:campfire:
You are a champion story teller... Keep it comin...
You got me all worked up man!
how come i KNEW you were gonna leave us haning there...
He stops at 45 yards & starts to skirt the ridge trying to get a whiff of the cow I`m now pretending to be. He is really staring my hidey spot down, as I realize I should have had more cover in front of me. I think he saw me move.
He stops & turns pacing back the way he came & starts to leave. One more bugle as he is leaving & he comes back for more.
If any of you have had a turkey hang up,that is just what he was doing. Back & forth he went.
The last thing he does on his way away is let out a few barks. I later find out it is a warning & bad if you hear it.I`m such a greenhorn. He slowly melts into the timber & my night is over.
What a rush! I decide right then that bull is gonna die & I aint leaving the area until I get him. Monday morning he gets it!
Congrats Big river, I know how much effort it takes and my hat goes off to you!
