I have a leather armguard that has a very strong leather smell.I've soaked it down with scent eliminator spray and it still reeks.I can't smell very well and I can easily smell it so i know a deer could smell it a long way off probably.Does anybody else have this problem or a solution.I was looking at armguards from Mikesleather but if they smell as bad as the one I have does then it would be a waste of money. Thanks for your replies.Ken
I don't think I would worry about it. If they are going to smell the arm guard-they'll smell you anyway.

Montana Pitch Blend..
Leather is just animal hide. Maybe they will think it's their long lost cousin lol.

Hunt into the wind and they will never know you're there till your broadhead lets them know. :archer2: <---<<< wind direction
I'm curious about a serious answer too. I have one. Will be keeping tabs on this thread.
By the time they smell that it will be too late

did U try any saddle soap ??
sit it next to a camp fire. let the smoke smell soak into it.
Quit thinking so much and go hunting. You will be fine.
I have not tried putting anything on it other than spray,Scent Shield or something similar.Do armguards from Mikesleather have a strong smell?

I have killed a ton of deer with one of Mike's armgaurds on, so I would guess not :bigsmyl:
Put it in a ziplock bag of rotting leaf compost. Check it often so it doesn't develop mold/mildew. It may stain to the color of the rotting leaves.
Primos makes a cover scent that smells like decaying leaves. You could try that too.
But like most here, the wind will help you or tell on you. I'm not sure anyone could ever be totally odorless.
I think the smoke idea is good too. Burn some damp leaves and hang the armguard in the smoke.
Just a note the wetter leather gets the more it smells, in time the smell will lessen as with an old belt but like a wet dog get it wet and nature takes over and the smell is back till it drys. You could try a leather dressing like snow seal but that may have it's own smell, also it may darken and soften the leather
Those scent sprays only reduce smells from bacteria not chemical smells like tanning fluid.
I firmly believe there is no degree of scent reduction that we can achieve that will allow us to be unknown to a deer downwind of us! I absolutely agree that being clean, having clean gear and reducing scent is beneficial but if you don't watch the wind, you are screwed and if you have a few hundred dollars worth of "scent-elimination" clothing in your closet, you have already been screwed.

You are absolutely correct, Jim. Just watch some of the "hunting" shows on television. One of their main purposes is hawking products. Many of those products are scent "control" related: clothing, sprays, soaps, etc. Think about how many times they get busted when "the wind switched" while they were washed, sprayed and clothed in all the latest, greatest scent control products from head to toe.
If they do all that and still get winded, leather smell is the least of your worries. Hunt into the wind and don't worry about the arm guard.

In the early season I wear my Justin Ropers. All leather except the sole. All year I oil them and saddle soap them when needed. During hinting season I either spray them with the Primos or tie a small cloth so it fits on the bottom of the sole just ahead of the heel and pour doe pee on it.
Justin's have a strong leather smell out of the box. And the stuff I put on them along the year makes them smell like a saddle shop.
It has worked for me.
I wouldn't tie a cloth soaked in doe pee on an armguard though.
Use a scent cover and hunt the wind when you can.
Maybe it's not as much of an issue as I think it is.Thanks for the help. This is a great place to get info and tips.

This is effective, smoke is my favorite scent eliminator. Destroys bacteria, has a "cover smell" and is free.
