Title: Ghillie on the ground
Post by: rock_hunter on September 23, 2011, 02:25:00 PM
I am trying to bowhunt deer on the ground in NW MN, a large swamp with no trees.  There are a lot of deer on the property, but only scattered brush on the dry ground by cattails.  I am using a ghillie suit, and had a doe bust me at 15 feet the other night.  Any tips or techniques to make me successful?

Play the wind and be as still as possible. I try to put some scent where I want the deer to stop and draw when their head is down or behind something. Try to setup with something behind you to break up your profile. Good luck, it is a blast!

I would try to shoot them sooner   :)   For me 15 feet is letting em get too close if its a deer I want to shoot. Ghillies are amazing.

Sounds like your pretty successful. I think I could even hit them at 15 feet. Good luck

At 15 feet it is pretty hard not to get busted.  45 feet is better. If you have them in at 15 feet you have fooled them pretty well.

Like above they can be too close. Movement is the key. Move only when they are in a position to not see ya. I prefer 12 to 15 yard shots not 15 feet. Good luck and enjoy the experience.

At fifteen feet, you should be giving us some tips   :) , but really I have had them even closer, it's great hunting on the ground, and wait until you stalk up on them at that distance.

Enjoy !

Lay on the ground and snore. It worked great for me as a kid hunting with my dad. Deer would come right up to us.

How did she bust you? Did she see movement, or smell you?

At 15' you can just put a leash on her!

The only tip I can think to offer is to shoot'em before they get so close or switch over to a spear.
It would be hard to be more successful than to have one at 15' and unaware of your presence. I think I should be asking for tips from you. Good job.
