Tonight I have been messing with a file and a zwickey two blade. I sharpened the head front to back going lighter with the pressure as I finished. Here is my question. The edge seems to have a visable burr on the edge. The edge does not really shave good, but when I run it across my thumb it just feels like it is pulling/grabbing and lays the skin open with little pressure. Is this the edge Mr. Bear preferred and is what I am calling a visible burr what is actually tearing my thumb up? I hope you guys can follow my description. The edge actually seems pretty lethal.
I do not believe so as the Fred Bear edge would shave easily. In order to achieve it you need to just knock of the burr with your file and you should have the Bear edge.
First, you should always file a broad head from back to front.I have been shooting two blade broad heads for about 25 years now and i have always used a file to sharpen them.File from back to front and use even strokes and after about fifteen to twenty strokes on each edge you will have an edge that will kill anything. It is all i have used for 25 years and i have put a ton of venison in the freezer and filled a room full of rack with it. That edge has killed more game than any other edge and will for as long as people use it. Old fred new what worked and we can learn from him even now. Keep your heads sharp and they will kill game with no problem. :thumbsup:
I actually was going back to front, dont know why I reversed it above.
Front to back or back to front, I doubt it matters much except you'd be less likely to poke yourself by filing from back to front.
The burr should be removed for that really razor edge... albeit slightly serrated. That can easily be done by moving the file down or up the edge holding it at right angles, alternating strokes.

I suspect the burr may get wiped off while passing through the hide anyway.
