Title: Maine Moose scouting report
Post by: maineac on September 20, 2011, 05:41:00 PM
Went up this past weekend to check the roads in the area I had previously chosen and scouted to make sure the hurricane hadn't wiped some out. Didn't see any moose, but plenty of tracks and the some fresh rubs.  As a matter of fact the cold snap on Sat. night seemed to turn them on because I saw way more sign on the way out, than the way in.  It is heating up, so good luck to all of you!

Hey Maineac - Do you set up on the edge of the road near a pond? I was up around Orono this summer and the woods are so darn thick you can't see for more than a few yards.  I was amazed at the private road/ logging road network though.

dirtguy, The woods are thick.  Most guys hunt them by driving the roads until they see one in the road or in a clearcut, climbing out of the truck and shooting them with a rifle.  I plan on calling, so wanted to get away from the roads.  Found a spot to put into a river that will give me 5 miles of river that is back away from any roads.  I was surprised to find the cover along the river to be a combo of bogs (bad news if a arrowed bull runs into one of those)and grassy swales with streams running through.  This is broken up by nice mature maple groves with little undergrowth.  Here are some picts of the areas.
