The Schafer/Windauer Silver Tip pulled through. I hunted this bull all season. Missed him twice last week. Finally crawled in for a good shot about 20 yards. I got to watch him go down, maybe 60 yards. Took all day to hike him down the mountain from 8500" and three miles. My 75 year old uncle helped and some great friends. Only camera was a trail camera set up on his rubs. Now for a shower & bed, I am whipped.
congrats, great picture too!

Oh, what a little sleep can do! Your right Montanawidower. Here is my tough 75 year uncle. Last week it really rained. There was a foot of hail, looked like snow. The elk were really singing. Then they went quiet when the Sun came back. I almost din't go due to my feet were(are) a mess. I would change clothes when I got close
to sneak. There were some real big bulls up there, but this was the one I thought I would try for. The BIG bull was screaming at me when I was doing "the waiting game" after I shot this one. The boxing ring was his rub area. I was busted by wind crawling into his bed, lost count how many times. I have to go back up today and get the hide, arrows and such. It is so nice to elk hunt, just the best time in the forest.
Nothing like hunting elk in AZ. Congratulations on a beautiful bull.
Way to go.I admire your perseverance and awed by your uncle.
Don't forget to ask for a camera for Christmas.

Hello Clarence! I wanted to get ahold of you. Your skinner with AZ Iron wood was the best knife we used. It was the only one that kept a sharp blade. All the guys want one now. I going to order one for my Uncle. Thanks gang for all your kind words. Oh am I sore! Buddy went up and packed the hide out today. What great memories were made.
Great Job!!

Nice, can't wait for my turn! If you don't mind, what unit were you in? I was deer hunting in 3C last month and saw a ton of cow elk, heard a few bugles, but saw no deer.
Your perseverance brought home the gold.
Congrats!!!!!
Hi Crew, Thanks for the nice words. I was in 7E. San Francisco Peaks. I like it because there is a "quiet zone", Wilderness and motorized closure. We had a big nasty fire.Extra miles to hike due to the fire issue closure. The floods that came after are far worst than the fire. The FS seeded the heck out of it. Last Tues. was the biggest floods yet. I was looking for a cave to hide in. The houses down the bottom of the mountain, well, going through hell is the best way to put it. All I had on the other non-burn side were baby spikes. The climb up there, I had it all to myself. No other hunter was "dumb enough" to climb up there and haul an elk out. There was a monster up there but the bull I picked out was the "one". About 8500' was a small bench where he had lots of rubs and bedded. He picked a great place where the winds changed often. He could see out pretty far. I was on my belly most of the time. My poor Schafer Tip took some scratches. There were hawks, owls and a Golden Eagle to watch all the time. Covered with flowers. Just the perfect hunt. I can still hear the elk singing. It's was Trad hunting is all about.

My tree stand is in the pine tree in the top middle of the picture. This was on the non-burn side of the mountain. I had a couple of fawns playing under me most times I sat up there. It was easy walking. pretty but not the elk I wanted to try for.

His main rub on the bench...battle field. The only flat place on that side of the mountain. He actually ran in front of this camera after I shot him. Hard to see, up top left of the picture. Tough realestate to sneak into with a smart bull. He fell over on the middle right side of the picture.
Victor, I much rather have been on top with the Elk than at the IC during the floods last week. You did it right, glad to see all the hard work paid off. Can I hire your Uncle as a pack mule for my next outing?
Man...readin' all these elk stories is really getting my wheels turnin'
Congrats on a great hunt.
NICE!! great bull
Excellent hunt, pics, & story.
Thats a super hunt Victor. Congrats to you and your awesome Uncle on the excellent pack-out. Great pictures.
Sure makes for easy sleep. Nice dreams too! Good job!
Congrats!! I used to hunt mulies in that quiet area when I lived in Kachina Village.
