Title: Ironic?
Post by: ishiwannabe on September 18, 2011, 06:54:00 PM
Tired of losing arrows, I decided the woodies I would make for this year would be BRIGHT. No stain, no subdued colors, etc.
While rummaging through my stuff I found some Bohning saturn yellow. Very thick, and dried out. Good thing I had thinner too. Then, after about a hour long search, I finally found the lacquer.
Eventually, I went to work making woodies for the first time in over five years.
Now mind you, I have lost my share of arrows in the woods. I dont care for it.
Anyway, through the whole process, my son Jace was right there. Full of questions...recommendations. You name it, he was there for it. I absolutely love time with him, especially since he is becoming pretty good with a longbow...for an almost four year old.
Well this morning, he awoke with a fever. So being his mother was away with work, I became "Dr. Dad". Pushing fluids, meds, warm clothes and tissues. He refused to eat. Anything.
Not one to give up, I began fletching the woodies he had helped me with yesterday. Suddenly, he was ok, wanted to help. He even asked me to take him outside to shoot his bow. I told him we could if he ate, so he did.
He then spiked a pretty high temp. Off to the real doctor we went. No signs of infections, and I was advised to keep an eye on him and continue with what I was already doing. As we were leaving, he stopped the Doc, and aasked him if he could shoot his bow. I couldn't help but smile.
Anyway, here are my "impossible to lose arrows".

Here is the boy, getting his dose of bow for the day. He loves shooting at(and hitting) balloons.

Now for the ironic part. I had to try the new woodies. I am VERY happy with how they fly out of my bow. A little nock sanding and I will be all set. However, that did not prevent me from missing an apple on the ground, and literally sinking the arrow out of sight. That is right. My first three shots, and I managed to lose one of these things!
On that note, we retired inside so I could make Jace some dinner. I had stuck two other arrows near the apple I had shot at as a reference...

That was literally a minute after we got done shooting.

Here is another, as I walked out to claim my arrows. I missed getting a picture of the deer's reaction to sniffing the arrows. A sideways jump type of thing....crazy enough that I was worried she would trash my two arrows.

Now, they may not be impossible to lose, but if they pull in deer like this every time, I am all set!  :biglaugh:

I found it! I misjudged how far a 500+ grain woody can travel through grass and dirt!
Thanks eveyone. I sure do like being able to shoot again. And while I am sticking to 45#, I am really trying to concentrate on my form. I am liking the results. Once I can shoot my normal weight again, I hope to keep the good habits.
Kids and archery just seem to fit. I sure do enjoy shooting with my boy. And hope he continues to enjoy it too.

That I am Charlie...
I just got back from the doctor again. Jace is on antibiotics now. Apparently strep or some sort of bacterial infection which resulted from him having what they think is the Coxsackie virus. No joke.
Sick and all, he was waiting when I got home from work. He got four balloons on his hunt today. I am one proud dad.

The Coxsackie virus is no joke.  Glad they caught it early.

I have a super sore throat and sinus infection.  I was planning ion seeing the doc on wed but may have to go tomorrow.

Balloons are fun to hunt not so much to eat   :readit:    :biglaugh:

All depends on how they are prepared...in the field and for the table.   :D

Can't beat breaking balloons to bring a fever down. Those arrows look exactly like the dozen I made for my son last week. He's shot pink fletch since he was 12 and wont use anything else. He'll get these when he returns from his 4th trip to wherever Uncle Sam sent him this time.

Here is how I make my woodies harder to lose:

My crest is white/red/white reflective tape. It is about two bucks for a ten foot roll at Walmart. They glow so bright in the picture you can't even really make out the red. It takes about 1 1/8" to go around an 11/32 POC arrow.

If you lose one, just wait until dark and go out with a flashlight. It is actually hard NOT to find them. Last fall I buried my stumping arrow in foot-deep grass. After searching for about 30 minutes, I gave up and walked back to the truck to get my flashlight. By the time I got back it was getting dark. I hit the area with the flashlight and, Bingo! there was my arrow. I had already been over that area, scraping around with another arrow and "feeling" with my feet with no luck.

BTW: I hate losing arrows too.

Hey Jaime are those some of the woodies I just sent ya? If they are or aren't, doesn't matter THEY LOOK GREAT! Hope Jace gets feeling better, and hope those arrows will have a little red stain on them here soon.

That they are John. The whole process impressed Jace quite a bit. He wants me to make him arrows now. Lol.
And yes, he is feeling a bit better. Got a little pep back since starting the antibiotics.  :)
30Coupe, that is a great idea. May have to follow suit...
