Title: Tennessee 30 minute hog hunt.
Post by: Red4arm on September 17, 2011, 09:53:00 PM
It turned off cool this week end and it got me itching to get in the woods. The Cherokee National Forest has a early deer/hog hunt this weekend. My brother and I decided to go since the weather is perfect. The National forester here is tough hunting usually, no much game and rugged terrain.
I knew it was a good omen when I was practicing yesterday and I ended up with this.

Bitter sweet, neat to get one, but ruined $20 worth of arrows

We arrived to our area right at day light to begin our hunt. There was one other truck at the pull off. I eased in to my area and sure enough, someone was in there. I eased out without them even knowing I was there. I headed to another area, slipping quietly down the trail, scanning the oak covered  hill sides.

I had gone a few hundred yards when I spotted a good hog feeding under a white oak. I was 60yards out. The wind was in my favor. I would move in as he fed and freeze when he looked up. I closed the distance. To 30 yards and the boar fed another 10 yards to me. It was too thick to shoot. My blood was pumping so hard I could feel it in my throat.

The boar made a few steps to root for more acorns and gave me a uphill 20 yard shot, man I hate shooting up steep hills.
The arrow flew true and found both lungs. The hog made a dash over the ridge and I thought I heard him crash.
I moved up to where he was standing and found half my arrow.

I called my brother to get him to come around to help me track. I didn't want to track a big hog into a thicket alone.
He headed my way and just as he got to me a bear was coming down the ridge to me. He saw us and eased back up the hill.
We were in a bear preserve are, so no bear hunting there, but it's neat to see them.
We started tracking and th hog had made it only 50 yards over the ridge.

I took him with a Magnus stinger head, gold tip 5575 full length with 100 gr brass insert. The arrow penetrated both sides. The bow was a self built take down 60 lbs at 28

The crazy thing was after field dressing and dragging  100 yards. The bear came back down the ridge. Looked at us and walked straight to the gut pile.
I knew there noses where good, but thats quick.
It was the fastest I have ever filled a tag. 1st day 30 minutes in.
It was a beautiful day to be in gods country.

Seems like a lot of bear activity for you Southern boys lately, and having one on your gutpile that quick must be a rush. Looks like a great hunting area. How big is that hog?

We have a ton of bears here now, but not much hunting season for them. There are a few dog hunts in the Forrest. But nothing for archers really. I see more bears up there than deer.
I didn't weigh him but I think he was close to 200 dressed.

Hey John,Congrats on the hog.I remember that bow when shooting it in your backyard. It was not all the way finished when I shot it but was a good shooter.I guess you're in the groove with it.I have seen the bear population growing more and more.Maybe the state will open Ocoee up someday so we can bag one.It was good you had your brother to drag it out.I had to use the creek one time as it was easier to slide the hog over the slick rocks than the woods.Thats a good one and the broadhead results speak for itself.Hope I can go with you to Falls Creek falls this year.
