I have a brand new string I had made for a 58" set of recurve limbs. (54" actual string length) I recently aquired a set of 56" longbow limbs for the same bow. (53" actual string length)
Would it be ok on the string to twist it enough to brace the longbow correctly? I would be twisting it to take up approx 1" worth of length....what say you??

As long as the string does not kink it will be alright. If it is made from HMPE watch it for spots that look like its rubbing( you'll see little fuzzy pieces)and quit shooting it. Keep it waxed, but if it were me I would get a new string for those limbs. Good insurance! I knew what I speak of as had one come close to breaking.
I'd get another string made.
I say that's too much. Get a new string like Orion said.

From the stand point of performance, the longer string would add more weight, due to the extra material!
This adds to many things in tuning your new limbs! Get a proper length string and enjoy the best performance from them!
Just had the exact thing a 54.25 inch string made for a 58 inch bow I wanted to use on a 56 inch recurve. I spoke to Pierre at SBD (string maker) he said that is too many twists and could cause failure from stress. Get a new string.
Not only weight and stress are problematic, but but a long string twisted up too much will become a spring and absort some of the bows energy too. I agree, just get a new string.

Never thought of the spring idea absorbing energym but makes sense.
