I am going to post pics of this one from start to finish, so it could take awhile. Please be patient with me!
This is going to be my biggest carve/burn piece yet, so I guess you could say the piece will be "Biggie" too, LOL!
The actual carve/burn area will be almost 11 x 14.
Here is the pic I will be working from. All I have done so far is pick the board so it may a while before I post the next pic.

This should be cool!
Really looking forward to following the process.
Thanks for posting
Art
On a business trip, but hope to get it carved out tomorrow night. Then I will start posting pics.
I'm Hooked. Always love seeing your work in progress.
This has got to be a good one. Can't wait.
Joe
Wow, look at the size of that beast :scared: ,and that's a big moose too...
after prepping the board (coating the bark with stuff to keep it from breaking off and sanding the board) I transfer some of the detail, then use a carving knife to make a stop cut all the around all the areas that will be carved out.
Then, I remove all the excess wood to create the different levels. Once the wood is removed (either by hand tools or by free handing a small router), I sand each level smooth. Everything has to be smooth otherwise the woodburning tools will catch on rough spots and create dark blotches.
background is about 3/16 deep and Biggie is about 3/32nds deep.
wow, i like that. cant wait to see the end result.
I Agree!! THAT is Cool!! :clapper:
cool!
Yeah, but you need to find a better picture.....one where Biggie doesnt look so depressed.... :bigsmyl:
This going to be good. I'm looking forward to watching this one unfold.
:campfire:
WOW!!!!! Shawn
update...
Not anywhere near done with Biggie's face! I usually do any faces first and get them to a point where I think they are looking pretty good, then start burning somewhere else. I will tweek it here and there as I work on the rest of the piece, then one of the last things I do will be to get the face exactly where I want it.
Faces take longer than anything, because they have to look like the person in the pic. Which is why I charge more for pics with more people.
Way cool! Can't wait for more!! :clapper: :clapper:
Thanks, Bjorn!
His face looks almost to dark, but I have found that as I burn everything else it appear lighter. I fact I usually have to darken the face more after burning the rest of the pic.
That is lookin' so *AWESOME* Chip!
It's gonna be tough to make Biggie more handsome-lookin' than that bull!
Keep up the great work!
Shoot straight, Shinken

update...taken me a while to make some progress

working on a piece that big is going to take a lot of time. I always look for the subtle differences.
*Excellent* work!

Looks like a Big..gie undertaking
wow, very cool. can't wait to see the end result.
The only word I can find is "unbelievable". You are doing this with wood burning equipment? Like the stuff we had in wood burning kits as a kid?
Thats too cool.
Thanks everyone!
Trad-man, Yes, except my woodburner does have a dial to adjust the temperature. Though I don't adjust it much. Most of the time I create different shades by moving quicker or slower across the wood.
not alot of change with this update...all my recent work has been on the twigs and leaves in the bottom left...
I remain amazed every time I see your work!

here's another update...
I have had a bunch of inquiries, so for those of you who might be interested in having me do one of these for you:
My prices have gone up quite a bit since I started doing these a few years ago. Even at the current prices I don't make more than 6 or 7 bucks an hour. Even a standard piece where I am just doing one hunter and the animal (no background detail) takes 40 to 60 hours. I have not been keeping track on this piece, but I figure with all this background detail I will be at well over 120 hours.
That being said, I am always willing to take a look at a pic you might be interested in having me do and quoting a price for you. Just email me the pic and I will give you a few options based on carving or no carving, background or no background, and size. Also, keep in mind it will cost more for pics with more people or animals. This does not obligate you to anything. I do require a 50% deposit to get on my "todo" List, but even that is refundable until I start your piece.
I do have a website where you can see most of my work, but I think it would be against the rules for me to post it here. Just pm or email me with any questions.
Hope to have another update posted tonight...Thanks!
I've never seen the Big-ster lookin' so good!
Keep up the great work!

That is awesome work. I looked you up on facebook and I can sure see why you are winning awards. Thanks for sharing.

Incredible! :notworthy:
not alot of change on this one, but posted anyway. Worked on Moose...
Amazing work.
I have always had a great respect respect for artistic ability. This is a prime example as to why. Amazing! Being a "wood" guy, it is your choice of medium that I like as well. Just exceptional!
Tim
WOW!
a little more progress, not anywhere near done with the moose's fur...
Wow, is the only thing I can say!
That is simply amazing!
Is it ok to tip an artist???
Yes it is Biggie, But not while he is working on your cool picture. It might get crooked.
(sorry,I had to)
It sure is looking good.
That is awesome! Now if I could only figure out how to get my wife to see this.....what with Christmas coming up and all.
Bisch
Biggie, All types of tips are acceptable, from hunting tips to cash tips, LOL!
Bisch,
Not likely you would get it before this Christmas, but maybe by Christmas 2012 ;-)
Incredible work sir!
I had hoped to have this one done by this coming weekend, so I could enter it in a Woodcarving show. Doesn't look like it is going to happen. I still have alot of work to do on the moose fur and antlers, fine tuning Biggie's ugly mug, and the leaves in the top left.
Man!
I went back and forth between the first pic and the last and I gotta say, this one is pretty amazing. I can see little differences but most of those are due to the challenges of shading in black and white vs. in color.
Chip, I'm gonna send you a pm with a pic of my sons first buck he got this year to see what you think. I probably can't afford it but I won't know unless I ask eh?
wow! i'm gob smacked! that is some inspiring work.
expect an email when i shoot a tahr one day.
Wow, what an incredible transformation.
looking good chip.
Always look more like airbrush art than wood carving to me!
You know how amazing I think your work is, Chip!
God-given talent!
update...
Sorry, Biggie, this piece is taking far longer than I thought it would...not just because of the detail involved, but because of life just getting in the way of my time to work on it. But I am making progress.
It appears to be getting close, but it is far from done!
Chip,
Beautiful work as usual. You just keep getting better. You have a great talent. I love to see your work.

No sweat! Take some time off and enjoy the holidays with your family. As long as it's here by next Monday.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Good thing you did not specify which "next Monday". Chip is a stickler for details and i can tell everyone it is worth the wait.
Happy Holidays to both Biggie and Chip.
Happy Holidays to you, Les! And everyone else! Really miss having contact with you and Pete!
Biggie,
Besides work and family, I had to get some hunting in during the rut and before rifle season. 3 years ago when I started taking orders it was right at the start of hunting season and I didn't do much hunting that year because I was at home burning. Promised myself that that wouldn't happen again and since they have almost all been hunters I think most of my clients would understand, including you, LOL!
Now I am gonna have to get out there after rifle season to see if "Bubba" made it past the orange army. That will be closer to Christmas though. Hopefully, I should be done before then.
Unbelievable!!
Mostly because you found a chunk of wood big enough for Biggie and a moose. Sequoia?
"Biggie" gotta be proud of that piece. Great work. Congrats to the big guy on all fronts.Be safe and "Keep'Um Sharp".
Wow!! Just can't come up with anything original, so will just have to stick to "Simply Amazing!!!"
Is it done yet or perhaps a little closer to completion. How about an update Chip.
I'd love to see the finished picture.

Any more pics yet?

Extremely talented! beautiful work.
That piece looks so good Biggie will probably want to use it for his picture next time he renews his driver's license.
Really great work!
Unbelievable workmanship!

The next trophy i get you will be getting a phone call my friend. Also i'm a very patient man so the wait would be no problem.
Joe Van
Well, have to say I got a little burnt out on burning and luckily Biggie has been very understanding! Also, started a new job in January that has kept me on the road alot.
That being said, I think I am finally done with it.
oops, just noticed something I want to fix, so there will be another final pic, lol.
WOW! That is simply *awesome* work right there!
