a hunting show that recaps classing bowhunts and bowhunters. Relive the old Fred Bear, howard hill and other hunts, discuss problems of the time and history that differ from today. History, legacy, entertainment, all in one, think it would work. Wonder if Bear, Pearson, and other sponsor it.
Sounds good to me, but the current hook and bullet shows are all about product endorsement... one 30 min. infomercial.
Im sure it would be great. But the cost of the lawyers to get you to use the footage and names you mentioned would be expensive. Im sure an outside individual(not family) ownes the rights, and they would want money. If you could get Ted Nugent involved,he woould back it,He loves Fred Bear and even wrote a song about him with a video(its on youtube).
In the context of their times, most were great bowhunters. But plug those old hunting ethics into todays and you got yourself a huge PC problem. Not going to happen I'm afraid.
I dont think it would fly..but i do believe a new "trad only" show by many of the gurus here would be well recieved and respected. Then they could highlight the "forefathers" mentioned above as well as some living legends incertain episodes.
I'd bet theirs a better chance of getting something like that on the history channel than anywhere else. Great idea.
I think a show with a guy in a big diesel truck with a hot wife, shooting the latest gadgets, with lots os sexual inuindos would work great. With NASCAR wraps on the trucks and utvs. Logos on everything. Mostly video of the hot wife.
We will be rich!
Thanks guys, I know I thought of that too, but wouldn't it be a great program. Even highlight some of those lost archer's who didn't get that much publicity. What a shame, would be great entertainment for us stick guys.
IMHO I was thinking that an archery hunting show featuring hunting Does would be pretty cool although Bucks would be fine too. They could get the message across that EVERY animal taken with archery equipment is a trophy. They will not mention antler scores or use the following catch phrase, "Smoked him!" They will not be acting like complete fools after the shot. They will talk about making poor hits and showing viewers what they went through to find their animal after making a poor shot. No sponsers will be mentioned until the final credits. Oh yea and mostly there will be MORE traditional archery featured.
I have a little experience in the hunting show area and although a classy, sponsor light, traditional show would interest me, the diesel truck, hot wife show has a much better chance of making it. Its expensive to produce and buy the airtime for a show and that is why shows are what they are.
All is not lost - DVDs are a great venue for content that doesn't have huge mainstream appeal and can be done within a budget that doesn't require as much sponsor chasing.
Its nice to talk about doing a super classy show that isn't focused on horns without all the product pushing, but tough to make it profitable or worth the considerable effort it takes to film & edit 13 shows worth of good content. All the time, effort, and money would probably be better spent just going hunting.
More than one retirement or kids college fund has been spent trying to get a show off the ground that never made it past the first season or two. The money is gone, the guys pushing the limits of their schedule and their families' patience are burnt out, and they wake up @ 4:30 AM to hit the woods less excited.
I'd like to see a show designed around hunters that we all know and love, but are not necessarily famous. Maybe someone good at the video part could travel the country hunting/filming with folks such as Warren Womack, Robert Carter, and John Bookheart. There are bunches of extraordinary hunters that can teach the average guy like me bunches, and would be very entertaining.
Why don't we video our own hunts at our own expense and send them in to someone to edit and put a dvd together each year. Now that would be cool. Sell them through TG and the proceeds all go to the St. Judes.
Swampyankee has it right, todays hunters would be appalled by some of the shots they took, not me as I understand the mentality of those times. Get an arrow in it and than use your skills as a tracker to find it(don't get me wrong, my statement is to be taken with a grain of salt) but I heard that said many times, even in the early 70's from the bowhunters I knew than. KentuckyTJ has the right idea!
