Title: Arrows for Mohawk LB
Post by: Pat B. on September 10, 2011, 09:56:00 AM
Guys, I'm more used to center shot bows..

I am getting a 45 at 28" longbow. I generally use 31" arrows, my draw length is very close to 30". I suppose the actual weight at my draw is 50+ pounds.

I have a bunch of Axis 500 and 400's. I'm hoping the 500's will shoot out of this bow.

Wondering what size aluminum might be appropriate and also what spine Surewood ?

Any help would be appreciated.

My longbow is 51@29 and I shoot a 30" 60-64 spine arrow with a 125 point.  I would think you will need a 65-69 spine if you use 125 gr points and 31" arrow.  Aluminum I would think is a 2018 at 31".  Carbon I don't know.  My longbow is cut short of center.  If the Mohawk is cut to center, you should have more options available relative to spine that will work.

mowhawks can be requested cut Very close to center shot.  replacing the the arrow plate with thin tape (i like teflon tape) gets you even closer.

however and imho, it's not just weight of the bow or the "recommended" arrow spine, or the arrow build, it's you the shooter that's a large part of the arrow selection.

to that end, after you read all the charts, play all the software selection games, and listen to all the opinions, do yerself a big favor and do yer own testing.  i prefer weak 29.5" shafts for all my mohawks - beman ics 500 (300gr up front), surewood 45-50 (190gr up front).

yes, if you can't beg or borrow shafts or arrows, you'll need to spend some dollars but they will be very well spent and will come in handy for future bows (no? no more stick bow acquisitions? HAH!   ;)   )

for woodies, surewood test kits are an Excellent way to trial out and figure what will work best for your bows and you.

yessir, joe - have shot both standard ad's and ad lites, both work just fine.  still have and shoot a set of standard ad's.  this is the only shafting that i know of that works well with most stick bows from 45-65# holding weights.  probably hasta do with the generous tail taper.

however, ics hunters are way heaps cheaper than ad's, and at least for me the bemans work quite well outta my mohawks.  while some folks might think twice about taking a "sketchy" shot that could end in a lost or broken arrow, the thought never ever enters my mind when shooting bemans or surewoods.  :D

ask any tg sponsor selling surewoods -  www.braveheartarchery.us (http://www.braveheartarchery.us)  comes first to mind.

My Mohawk is 45# @ 29" and I shoot 50-55 31" tapered POC shafts with a 29" draw and 125gr points.
