Ok, put a dacron string on my FF capable combo hunter. Learning how to make strings and this is what the gentleman was teaching me with. Not going to look a gift horse in the mouth.
To my suprise. The B50 is as quiet without silencers as the FF material? was with silencers. I thought to myself "This thing is only going to hiss after I put silencers on it".
Well after placing silencers and moving them from 15 to 20 inches it I got extra noise from the bow. Took them off and just a very light vibration noise.
This was with fur silencers. Next I will try some homemade yarn puffs.
Anyone seen this before? I know some silencer material is better than others but I never thought that one could make it louder.
As a general rule they should be quieter with puffs.
Try Woolie Whispers. I have never had a string without puffs quieter than one with puffs.
I have to put my homemade yarn silencers about 5"-6" from where the B50 string touches the limbs on my recurves, any further down and it gets louder.
I never had any luck with fur silencers, just seem to look good and not work well!
I rarely put silencers on a dacron string, but too I rarely shoot a dacron string, just don't care for them.I only shoot a dacron string on a couple of older recurves,if I put on silencers I'll use half of a cat whisker.I put silencers on a Hill with dacron string and it increased handshock alot,it shot better without the silencers.
I have yarn wool puffs installed in the bowstrings on both of my recurves and they definitely quiet the bow noise upon arrow release.
I've only ever used those little rubber whiskers...never had a problem, but it seemed to mattter a lot where i put them on the string to how effective they are.
I second what Jake said!

I've had a beaver silencer work loose on a string that wasen't broke in yet and make noise.
When properly installed on my recurves they work good. On my longbow they are just for decoration.

I have a LB that can only use rubber spider type silencers all others make noise.
The yarn balls worked like a charm. Easier to make and tie in than fur silencers anyway haha
If you use the fur silencers you gotta make sure they are tight in and around the string or they will rattle also. I like the looks of the fur but yarn seems quieter to me so thats also what I seem to go with. Not to mention the variety of colors available.
Yeah, I am anal about my fur silencers. They are always super tight. Just seemed to added string noise (twang) and even a little handshock on this bow and string combo.
10 wraps of yarn and i was hunting!
I only put mine about 8" to 10" from the loops & it quiets my bow way better than putting them in 14" to 15". However that is my set up each setup has its own sweet spot as we all know.
I like dynapuffs...cheap..quiet..and easy to install...after installed you can move them up and down to find the sweet spot.
amsteel blue 1/4" rope cut in 2" pieces.
costs alittle over a dollar a foot.
