Hi All
Last Friday at about 6pm a nice looking mule deer doe walked into my shooting lane and I took the shot. I shot my 55# Mohawk long bow (thanks Vince) and woodsman broads (thanks 3 Rivers). The arrow entered on the right side at the level of the 7th rib and exited low between the 2nd and 3rd ribs. She was down in 6 or 8 seconds.
Three days later, Monday evening a cow elk walked in front of the same tree stand and I got her also. She went down in 245 yards. That arrow buried to the white feathers near the 7th rib but I did not get an exit wound. (elk are big). I found her about 7:30. I had the quarters, back straps and loins etc, in bags by 9:30. And in the truck about mid-night. Hunting elk is fun. Shooting an elk is great! Getting an elk out or the woods at night, alone really sucks. But if you are mentally and physically prepared.... well it still sucks, but I am blessed to have had the opportunity of doing it - again.
Tomorrow I am headed back out to see if the bears have found the carcuss. If it looks like they are still working it I will hang a stand over it and spend the next 2 1/2 days sitting quietly. We will see......

The rest of the story.....
I went back Friday AM to see if the bears had found my elk carcass. When I got to within sight of the elk I could see movement! It turned out to be a pack of 'yotes. I got a shot on one but he was in the next zip code by the time the arrow got there.
I hung a stand 10 yards from the elk and waited 5 hours... zip.. I left about 7:45pm.
The next day when I got there a bear had been there and the elk was partly covered. I sat from 11am until dark and had a no show.. dang full moon.
Joe
PS. Only 11 months, 3 weeks and 6 days until elk season!
and 5 weeks until whitetail season.... I better go practice.
-
Nice going Joe!! Congratulations.

Congratulations on an already successful year!
-
Congratulations!!
-
very nice joe
-
and the rest of the story is that I never saw another bear. A bear had been to my elk carcass and I spent two very long days in a stand over a stinky dead elk and no one showed....
-
Very Nice Joe. Good luck with the bears.
